Lowe's and HD websites blow goats. Lowes is utterly worthless, while HD is just mostly worthless... I do buy from locally owned lumber yards when I can, I'm just trying to learn a little before I approach them. Thanks for the help: this does help a LOT. The 36 inch stuff at HD is solid hardwood, available in cherry, oak, hickory or maple. Not sure if it's a sheet good or not, but would hate to have to deal with those short pieces. Anyone know if the HD sheets are available in oak? This whole project started as a means to disguise the long, narrow nature of the space, so I'd probably do the beadboard with 'beams' to hide the joints and create rectangles running opposite the long axis. 4x8 sheets would give me the most choice as to how large to do the rectangles, and would save some serious installation time.

We are building a "new old house"...so it looks like it's been on the side of the road for 200 years...we live in a rural area and I really love the old farmhouse styles. We are getting Shiloh cabs - soft white beaded inset square door for the perimeter (not the raised panel). Then, we have a "chunkier" more rustic/casual island with the dark walnut stain..it's knotty alder but I can't remember the door. We then will have reclaimed oak floors and a hood with a rustic beam trim around. Anyway, my point is, I think the overall look with the soft white beaded inset can be really vary depending on countertops, lighting, flooring and hardware you select to go with it. I wanted a kitchen that was like a great pair of jeans - you can dress it up when people are around, or keep it totally casual when it's just you hanging out :)
