Rental car companies

My DH and I are travelling to Austin, TX for a few days next month. We need to get a rental car. Does anyone have suggestions for a reputable company? I was thinking of Alamo but would welcome other ideas.

budget at the airport is the cheapest in town-i lived in austin for over a year until recently. Enterprise was the most expensive. budget had nice clean vehicles that worked great!

have fun in austin

also if u want a great place with a view fo dinner, try the oasis on the lake. can't beat it

I just go on the WEB and find the best deal. Unless it's a company I've never heard of. I have yet to have a problem with any of them. And believe me, Hertz or Avis are not worth the extra money.

not having a trade you in a very desirable position. I HATE buying cars and all the bs that goes along with it. You really should try to use Edmunds to find your desired car then use the internet to try to get the car for that price. Once they agree to the price, just go drive it. If you like it they just have to write it up. Alternatively you can find the car at the price you want over the net. Pop into the dealership to drive it...don't tell them you've been in contact on the net. If you like it, go home ask them to write every thing up. You may need to email some info back and forth if you want a loan. Then just go in, sign the papers, pay and drive off---should be pretty quick if all the paperwork is much done. I do not know what you are looking for but 2010 Corolla LEs are selling under $300 invoice and had a $750 rebate last month. I am not sure what the rebate will for for Feb. We are talking out the door for about $16.7K or less. That seams like a great deal and I took advantage of it this week. If not pickly about colors, send for some quotes from local dealers. Then on or around Feb 25 say you want to purchase on 2/28 and tell them to send there drop dead best price. It should be pretty painless. Good luck. PS As far as Enterprise, I'd be weary. A low milegae car reccomended by consumer reports I might take a chance on...a car with a bed rep from Enterprise...forget it.

Read all the fine print on the credit card insurance coverage before you rely on it - I've seen some that won't cover rentals that last for more than 30 days. I don't know why (I would think a rental is a rental), but I've seen that limitation on more than one credit card. Also, a lot of them will only pay after you file a claim with your regular insurance company. The coverage through your credit card can be handy, but it's worth reading the fine print, especially since you'll be renting for a long time.

Check out orbitz.com as well as expedia. They often have great deals on rentals. They work with six or 8 rental companies. Results from a search involve all companies and all car sizes in one big chart that's easy to look at. Another place to check is the site of the airline you're flying. I booked a rental last night after buying a ticket on USAir. It's with Hertz, usually the most expensive rental company, but the rate was $4/day less than the Dollar and Thrifty quotes on Orbitz. The USAir site directed me to Hertz and automatically inserted a discount code.

I use Enterprise exclusively. With a recent rental, I bumped into a pole and left a huge dent in the bumper. When I went to return it, because my flight was leaving before they were open, I had to drop it off and I was very nervous about that. I took pictures and waited to hear from them-it was an obvious ding-and not a single word. I had purchased their optional insurance because I only used it for 2 days and I didn't have my auto insurance info with me , it was a last minute rental as the co I had reserved with ended up not having any vehicles available when I arrived. Anyway-PDX is a great airport-far, far better than LAX! You should have no trouble picking up your reserved vehicle there. You'll just take the shuttle to the rental area and zip in and out.

We're back from our trip. Budget would've been the cheapest of the firms located at the airport. But I did some digging and found a local firm, Longhorn Rentals, saving over $100 on the deal. The vehicle was fine. Now they did not really offer transportation to/from the airport, but since we had relatives locally, it was not an issue for us. I would use them again if I travelled to the Austin area.

On our honeymoon at Walt Disney World, Orlando FL 1983 we had previously arranged to rent a car at Alamo in the airport. They 'suggested' (and I agreed) to take their no deductible insurance, $7 a day back then. They had pictures of smashed-to-smithereens cars on the walls with a sign 'Wouldn't you feel better if YOU were covered?' just as an arm twister. I fell for it. I found out later that I could get a copy of my own car insurance policy from my agent showing the rider that it covers rental cars, and saved the $49. That's what I did when I took my kids there in '01.
