vacation in south georgia

my sister and i are going to st. marys ga the last of march for 2 weeks. does anyone have some sights to see. we also quilt and wonder re: shops,quilt shows. ralfsmom

Get tickets and take the ferry to Cumberland Island for a day. You may also want to go over to the east side of the Okefenokee Swamp at Folkston. I don't know about shopping, sorry.

I second nedraw's suggestion to go to Cumberland Island and Okefenokee Swamp. At some point you may want to make reservations for the ferry to Cumberland Island - they only take so many passengers per day.

I don't know how close St. Simon's Island is, but I'd think the shopping would be better there than St. Marys.

Concur: Just about anything that will germinate in hot soil. I plant mostly southern peas and lima beans in July. Common bush beans in early August. Squash will also work as will cucumbers but pickle worms can give you major trouble. I start broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower in mid-late July in a cool shaded bed. Transplant in September. Nevr been able to grow Brussel Sprouts in mid Georgia. Turnips, mustard, komatsuna,kale, rutabagas I start direct seeding labor day and make successive plantings until mid October. Start onions in September, transplant in December. If you like melons in the fall, both cantaloupes and watermelons will make if you can control disease.

Camellia Nurseries in North Florida or South Georgia?

Loch Laurel Nursery has a huge number of camellia varieties, and the owner is extremely knowledgeable. Also quite nice. I spoke to him once on the phone and received especially helpful information. He is very active in the Camellia Society and knows camellia people all over. They don't do mail orders, but will reserve what you might want to await your pickup. If you make an appointment (no regular retail hours) they also will let you look at plants there to decide on varieties. Planting beets in south Georgia

Broccoli is very easy to grow. I start in a cold frame around February 1, transplant into the soil in late March early April. Nothing special(just plow, disk, add a liitle 10-10-10 and set)I keep the cabbage worms off with Bt. Varieties that I grown well over the past five years are Superdome, Galleon, Blue Wind, Early Dividend, Green Comet, Barbados, Everest,Packman, Green Goliath. Varieties that have been less than expected include Belstar, Bonanza and Gypsy. In the past I have grown many of the older varieties include some of the sprouting broccolis, but I like nice heads so I no longer play with them. As for beets, Improved Blood Turnip, Crosby's Egyptian, Merlin, Cylindra, Early Wonder, Ruby Queen, Red Cloud, Kestrel, Chicago Red, Pacemaker III. I tried Detroit Dark Red back in the fifties, but I never liked them, so I don't play with them anymore.

Well a quick google search can give you a LONG list of things to do in South Georgia, other than that if you're going to fly see if the big travel sites have any good deals - bookit dot com is pretty new and has a lot of package deals.
