new york city here we come

Well it is all set we are going to NY city in June. We got a flight out of Grand Rapids Michigan to New york for $183.00 booked and bought! Made reservations at the Marriott Marquis for $239.00 a night. I would love to find out what we need to go see. Has anyone been there and have any idea's?

there is tons to do. what do you like to do? the best thing to do in new york is just to wander new york. i'd forget the major tourist sites like the empire state and just wander around soho, the west village, up 5th avenue around 59th st and central park. if you can afford it, i'd choose a fabulour restaurant each night for dinner--that is one thing nyc has that is hard to find elsewhere--extraoridnary food/atmosphere--but cheap it aint! consider taking in a show--the musicals are quite a production. definately go up to the metropolitan museum. if you like opera--look into seeing s show at the met. search on this forum, i think others have asked similar questions. good luck, have fun!!

Take a carriage ride through Central Park; the United Nations tour is interesting; I loved walking thru the diamond district, of course a trip to NYC ought to include Radio City, and I loved the Doubleday Book store.

I live in the North-East Bronx, just South of Westchester, NY, and I find that most of the local nurseries, garden centers, and Home Depots/Lowes etc. suck, if you're trying to find anything that approaches an "exotic" ingredient for making Al's growing medium. None stock Turface-MVP, and they never heard of it. I've been to them all, and haven't found anything that could be called "pine-bark fines"...just shredded mulches....that will mat down, and clog the mix. After you factor in the cost of gas, your personal time, phone bills, cost of the products, time used to screen out unwanted materials -which doubles the cost, if 50% is wasted- the mix becomes very expensive. I can't be bothered hunting down all the ingredients anymore. I cut my losses. I just buy premium grade Repti-Bark at the local Pet-Co/Pet-Smart, a 20 lb. bag of aquarium grit, and a bag of Turface-MVP, and make the mix. NAPA Auto has oil-dry compound that can sub for the Turface. Some of the bark nuggets are too large, but, what the hay. Most of it is usable out of the bag. Hit the big pieces with a hammer. Yes, there are cheaper alternatives for the ingredients that I have mentioned, especially the Repti-Bark, but I'm not driving all over the state just to collect the ingredients that I need. Re-read the 2nd paragraph. Just my two-cents worth. The mix is great,...if you could find what you need, EASILY. My Clivia love the stuff, and you can not over-water plants! No PWT either! Frank PS....When the bark breaks down, just wash out the residue, and re-cycle the Turface-MVP, and the grit. Use new bark chunks, and you're good to go. Just the bark-fines break down.

Hello Everyone, I think we hit 70 here yesterday, but of course i was out working in the northeast. Newark!!! It was nice there, but i wish i was here in Vb to have this wonderful warmth!! I was able to cancel my hotel without a cancellation fee due to weather. And, the show we were to see today offered to give us another date. With that, we'll try to make it a 2-show trip if coordination goes well, hopefully in non-threatening weather conditions. While my sis was to do the driving and the weather doesn't bother her, I'm an anxious passenger with all the other crazies out there, especially with inclement weather in the mix. Home safe, now just waiting to see when and what happens. Here's hoping we don't lose power this round. Appreciate all your feedback.

Whoops, sent that off too quickly! Beagles and txjana, while doing my reseaech and looking specifically looking for "bargain shopping in NYC", Century 21 was listed with a nod to Carrie. For shopping, it will be our first stop! This pic is worth a thousand words! Mtn, really? ABC Carpet? Maybe we'll need to check it out~for some reason I always trust your judgment. MOMA was NOT my schick or my son's. The only thing I was impressed with was Monet's Waterlillies. Am hoping DD will want to visit the Metropolitan Museum, but if not, I'm good with that~this won't be my last visit! As for a 2nd play, we haven't decided yet, and because I've already seen Wicked, DD would prefer something else. Thank you for your suggestion of restaurants! We're both 'pseudo' vegan so will check the online menus. Believe it or not, son and I only saw Central Park from a tour bus~we'll definitely be taking a little stroll, and sitting outside is our favorite way to eat, even in the heat of Tx. Son and I had a great dinner in a quain little restaurant in Bryant Park, so am looking forward to taking DD there. She really isn't interested in seeing the SOL, but Ellis Island is a must! I'm looking forward to going back again! As for SJP, such a spoiled 'brat.' Lol By the way, is Trybeca worth a visit? Will we be close from Times Square? We really don t want to take the subway, prefer a cab, but not if it's 20 miles away. Is Uber 'safe' for 2 women, mainly for daytime jaunts? Panko, you saw Mr Big? We can only hope! Three more days!!!!! ;)

!st I would find out the 800 number (18005551212) of "I LOVE NEW YORK" and have them mail you their brochure. It will have lots of ideas.

How long are u staying??

Here is miy suggestions:
1- Empire state building
2- Rockefeller center
3- United Nations
4- Brooklyn Bridge
5- Battery Park with a boat ride to the Statue of Liberty
6- A boat ride AROUND MANHATTAN
7- The Word Trade Center area (close to Battery Park)
8- Wall Street and Trinity Church
9- 42nd street & Broadway (Times Square)
10- Central park (DURING THE DAY ONLY) at 59th street
11- Fifth Avenue from 34th street to 59th street

Get a GOOD map of NYC and get a subway map (free) it is the best and fastest way to go in Manhattan + walking. Figure that North-South is ONE mile per 20 blocks.

There are some previous threads you could do a search to look at some tips, maybe. But, since you're at the Marriott Marquis, go downstairs to see Thoroughly Modern Millie. We saw it in October, was great! It won best musical, best actress and some other awards. You'll enjoy it I'm sure. I'll write a few more of my favorite things another time, I'll get my thoughts together!

If you can go downtown, try China Town for great dim-sum...Little Italy for a coffee and cannoli at Ferrara's...or a great dish of pasta at one of the Italian restaurants...Soho...which is south of Houston (pronounced House-ton) Street. great artsy fartsy shops and stuff...Washington Park and the NYU area (part of Greenwich Village) is great walking too!

If you love shopping, don't miss Macy's at Herald Square, Bloomies, Tiffany's, Lord & Taylor. Natural Museum of History, MOMA, Guggenheim - all great places to visit. - great upscale boutiques (nice to window shop and dream) are nearby. I agree with getting to SoHo and don't forget Tribeca (triangle before Canal Street) - very artsy and trendy. Chinatown and Little Italy are a must. If it's not a clear day don't go up the Empire State building. The Statue of Liberty is just as nice to see from the water, instead of wasting time going there, I would take the Staten Island Ferry across and back - it is FREE. Takes about 25 minutes one way. Don't forget St. Patricks Cathedral across from Rockefeller Center and near Saks Fifth Ave. If you are trying to go to see a popular play, try to get tickets now. You can still get 1/2 price tickets at Time Square, but you have to have time to spare and wait on line. If you are interested in geneology go to Ellis Island. You may need to stay there a month to do all of this, HAVE FUN, June is a nice time of year to visit NYC.

Meg - the Chinatown/Canal Street area has some bargains. They sell a lot of designer look alike pocketbooks, belts, etc.

I'm just back from NY, it was INCREDIBLE......I stayed at the Marriot Marquis.......went to Rockerfeller Centre and did the Today show (even got on tv!!).....went to 11 on Maddison for dinner, that was superb.......went to Bloomingdales.......got Letterman tickets.......just a fantastic time.....I'm already planning a second trip!!!
