Rome vacation

We are planning a family trip to Rome for one week in March. Does anyone have info about the Bettoja Hotel Mediterraneo? How about the neighborhood around the Termini Train station? Is this a suitable area to stay in terms of safety? How about the distance between the major tourists attractions in Rome? This is our first trip to Rome so we have many places to visit.

Anyone have a special place they found interesting?

Not sure about the safety in the areas that you mentioned. I believe we visited all the major attractions in Rome and traveled via taxi to each. We also did a night bus tour of the city. St. Peter's/Vatican was the highlight of the trip for me. I also enjoyed the Callistus Catacombs among the other obvious major tourist attractions in Rome. The Trevi Fountain is also beautiful especially at night.
I certainly wouldn't try to drive on your own. The traffic is horrible and very unlike in the states. They drive very fast, don't have specific lane usuage, and zip in and out and pass without a thought. Parking would also be a problem.

i just found this post, so i cann't help you plan.
I would have suggested a snack on top of st. peter's.
some time around the spanish steps. a trip to the market at campo fiori. definitely a trip around the forum and the coliseum. don not walk along the trails down along the side of the tiber-- a land of drug users & crime. The borghese
gardens are wonderful. when i went to rome it was for the big city life so i didn't do much of the historical stuff.

What was neat about this fountain was that it was not a tourist destination. We six were the only ones there! After viewing the fountain, I crossed the street and took this photo of the left bank of Rome. After seeing many churches, I asked the driver if he had any knowledge as to how many. He knew that one. 365 Roman Catholic churches in Rome - one for every day of the year. After this, we had our one-hour ride back to Civitavecchia. It was not raining there, naturally. Our sail away time was scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and we had about one hour to spare. We'll be in Naples tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. We need to rest, since we then go to Sorrento, and a couple of stops in Sicily before we get a break.

Hi! We rented a place in Paris last year through Vacation Rental by Owner- their website is VRBO.com. It could not have been a more plaesant experience! While we had reserved one property, upon arrival the owner upgraded us to a larger property he also owned. I've recommended this site to other friends that have also loved the experience. To us, it's equally important to choose a style of vacation along with the destination. It's also important to determine if you want a destination where English is the primary language or if you are fine with another language being predominant. There are "go to 1 place, take day trips, and lounge around" vacations. Then there are "go, move frequently, see the sights in a region" vacation. We tend to do the latter. My favorite to date has been Egypt, flying into Cairo and joining an organized tour of the region. My next favorite region has been Prague, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Awesome architecture and history in both! I've been fortunate to have spent alot of time in England, Scotland,Wales, France, Switzerland, Germany. To me, Wales is just more of England and Scotland. I'd take Scotland over Wales anyday...particularly because the golf is better in Scotland. My cousin's son will be moving from England to Bali in 2 wks. Bali and Indonesia are our next long distance destination. We're planning that to be a "stay in basically 1-2 locations, do day trips and lounge type of vacation". Good luck on your decision.

Ive done some minor trips alone-- extensions of business trips, a week at the beach, a day or overnight in a city. I really don't need the company of others for the times when I am lounging on the beach, shopping or museuming. I think the key is to plan your trip around the things you very much enjoy alone. I used to rent a house on the beach where I could take my dog. My sister and niece would come down for an overnight.. sometimes I would allow a bf to come for a night or two. I loved those getaways but I don't really think of them as vacations. I have been looking at options for a trip -- not yet sure of the timing but I am considering a cooking school in mexico that offers a lot of solo time as well as a trip to Cuba. The problem with these kinds of solo trips is that you are at least loosely connected with a group. I am not sure if I'll enjoy that.
