Right now we manage a peach orchard in the desert area, no green lawns, lots of dust and in the 100's most of the summer & winters are fairly mild but can get down in the 20's in the winter. My husband doesn't like cold. We are orginally from Indiana and it's too cold in the winter. The areas with mild winters would be great. I would like areas where I can get plenty of good animal manure and food wastes to feed my worms. If anyone knows of any fishing bait distributors I need that info. Any info I can get will give me a good idea of where to start looking for farms. Thanks, MaryKay

If you're thinking of TN, definitely go for Eastern TN. I moved to Memphis 2 years ago and can't wait to move to the Knoxville area. I've done a lot of research and it seems really nice. Plenty of lakes and rivers and the state park nearby. I lived in FL for a while and if you're used to four seasons you'll definitely miss them if you move to Vegas (Christmas just isn't Christmas when you're wearing shorts). I love that the seasons here are equally spaced the only problem with Memphis is that it is so hot and humid in the summer that in July and August being outside is miserable. It's usual about 95 with 90% humidity, not fun. From what I heard and read, Knoxville is still hot but about 10 degrees cooler in the summer especially in the mountains. There's a town called Maryville which is just south of Knoxville and it seems really nice. One thing you'll have to do to garden here is amend the soil (raise beds are best)since TN has clay soil. I've heard that Maryville makes it easy because they collect the leaves and mulch them and if you ask nicely they'll give you a bunch of the mulched leaves which are perfect for creating lasanga beds. Maryville also seems to have all the major stores either in the town or nearby. The schools there are really good and I know you said you don't have kids but good schools ussually produce good kids and it's much nicer having well behaved neighborhood kids than otherwise.

We moved to Chattanooga in 2008 and lived in an apartment for a year or so until we could have a look around. A year later we found a house in a suburb of Chattanooga named Flintstone, Georgia which is a very close drive to downtown Chattanooga and very affordable housing. By the way, I have also lived in Daphne and Fairhope, Alabama in 1995-1997. We didn't grown things there except on the deck of our apartment in Daphne where we won "Terrace of the Month" - lol. It depends on your yard around here as the area is very diverse with mountains, hills and valleys. Welcome to Tennessee and to Chattanooga!

Atlanta has: Six Flags over Georgia Whitewater - water park (with an amusement park for young kids next door) Aquarium - the aquarium is very nice Coke Museum Stone Mountain - water slides, cable cars, duckmobile, riverboat ride, shops, etc. Lots of shopping - Atlantic Station downtown has lots of restaurants and stores including Ikea, but not outlet stores like Pigeon Forge. I think there are some nice exhibits going on down there right now, too, but I don't know what they are. There's other shopping all around Atlanta, lots of outlet malls around the fringes of Atlanta if you know where they are. Atlanta Braves baseball Fernbank Museum of Natural History (kids like the dinosaur skeletons) Atlanta has an art museum and other art venues and a history museum, but you may not want to do those things with young children in tow. Olympic Park has a big fountain the kids like to play in. If you feel like driving to north metro Atlanta, the Mall of Georgia is nice. There are often concerts outdoors beside the mall, lots of shopping and restaurants. In Duluth there is a train museum that is probably nice if you have a young train enthusiast. It's been years since we went, but my son loved it when he was little and crazy about trains. Other attractions that I've heard are nice but aren't as kid friendly are touring the historic Fox Theater (or taking in a show there, and sometimes in the summer they have movies there that are very affordable) and touring the TBS studio or CNN studio. I don't know where you'd rent a cabin with a pool in the Atlanta area. Instead of Pigeon Forge you might try Gatlinburg. It's in the mountains and within driving distance of Dollywood. Gatlinburg might be a little closer to Atlanta than Pigeon Forge, it might cut an hour off your drive (I don't know). If you just want to rent a cabin and relax, you might try Calloway Gardens. It is nothing like Pigeon Forge, but there are cabins, bike trails and bike rentals, beautiful gardens, a lake with a beach, it's very close to Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park (as in you could easily bike to it). I think there's an animal safari type attraction over there, too. But it is nowhere near as built up as Pigeon Forge and there's no amusement park. There's not a lot of shopping and few good restaurants. Good luck with whatever you choose.
