Planning a tour trip to Ireland, How many have been there?

Maggie, My husband and I spent 3 weeks in Ireland for our honeymoon in May-June of 1999. I booked the flight and rented a car from info I found on the Net. Before we left the US, we purchased a Michelin (sp?) map of Ireland from Barnes and Noble, and we made a list of places we'd like to see from info we found in library books. We really appreciated the map because interesting sites were labeled on it and easy to find. We checked out various maps when we got to Ireland, but never found any as good as ours. (That was surprising.) I especially enjoyed the west coast of Ireland, although most of Ireland is interesting and beautiful. During our visit, we chose to tour the Republic of Ireland and not Northern Ireland. I'm sure we must have missed a lot of beautiful scenery there too. If you want further information, let me know. I could go on and on about the good and bad experiences of that trip.

@jenniferbeaty I came across this thread because there's actually a discussion about it today in one of my Facebook groups. One of the members relayed the following though I'm beginning to doubt the correctness of her information: "i found this little note a few years back ... the daughter of the man who ran the Ireland's Chili and BBQ empire out of Wichita Falls has a family restaurant (Odom's Old Town Smokehouse BBQ) in Burleson, TX, where she cooks all of her Dad's old recipes. The website says that Ireland's sold out to Ranch Style Beans of Fort Worth. Looks like a very roadfood-worthy place to dine." I imagine @Carolyn Ireland could confirm or deny its veracity. Regardless, the place is no longer in business. In regard to the flavor of Ireland's canned BBQ my memory is that it was quite unique and very smoky — almost addictive.

E globulus is very possible in that location. A bit of Googling found this: 'The Killiney district on the coast about 9 miles south of Dublin is remarkable for a number of fine specimens of E. globulus mostly as single trees in residential grounds. The grounds of the Canadian Ambassador's residence in particular contains groups and single trees of remarkable dimensions and in vigorous condition and these trees present a very fine spectacle.' I need a waterproof shoe for Ireland

Bac - I just checked Munro's website and I don't see the ones I have. I bought them about 5 years ago so they probably discontinued them. My Irish driver told me to bring waterproof shoes which is why I bought the LLBean hikers. I was traveling in October and spent a lot of time on the west coast which is usually colder, rainier and windier than elsewhere in Ireland. I have other Munro shoes that I also like for everyday and travel- the Joliet is very comfortable, light, flexible and breathable yet offers good support. I bought them at my local shoe store last November and they sprayed them with the water repellent aerosol and they kept my feet dry on rainy or snowy days around Philly.

Back when I was a newbie in my career as a 'rosemaniac' (mid/late 90s), Sean McCann was a prolific contributor to various rose publications. He was always one of my favorites, and a great writer. I also think that he may have participated in the old GW or the old rec.gardens.roses, or maybe both. Thinking about all of those old guys who contributed to my rose education melts my heart: Jim Delahanty, Bob Martin, Bill Hillman. There were many others. Sorry for the trip down memory lane, but seing Sean's name sent me back :-D

If you really want to see Ireland up close, do rent a car, but as the last post, have a plan on what you might want to see...Also, staying in B&Bs is great. The people couldn't be more helpful, nicest people in the world and they treat you wonderful..Truely, as my husband would say, Ireland is God's country. A trip you'll never forget.....

We went with CIE tours - Fly and Self drive - visited the whole country except the extreme north and stayed at B & Bs. It was one of the best trips we have had!

Well, Ireland is the best place in the whole world! Been there 2 times and can hardely wait to return. Use Karen Brown's book's on Itenery & B & B's you won't be sorry.
