Sources for decorative metal grill pieces

IÂm looking for some metal grill pieces (I donÂt know the proper name for these. ) I see them offered in stores like Hobby Lobby, as "Metal wall art", but canÂt find the width I need, which is around 6 inches wide. Ideally about 30 inches long, but if they happened to be shorter, and I had several, I could just stack them into a frame or screw them onto wood.

I want to fill in extra space in a wood project, about 6 inches wide by 31 high, and thought some green or bronze patinaed metal would look nice with the dark stained wood. Original color doesnÂt really matter, I can always paint it.

The nearest architectural salvage place is hours away, so I need either a store or the internet.

Thanks for any suggestions. I'm posting to a few forums since I don't know who might use these in their projects.

Hi, I went to ebay and typed in metal grate in search and got a bunch of things. Here is one of them. If you added 6" to the search you would narrow it to more of what you want, but you might miss some too.

It seems as if you are not interested in making them yourself which would drastically reduce the cost. However, you could always get someone like a student to do this for you. There is tons of info on here about what you need to do the job. If you don't know you can ask and anyone will help you. You could buy the moulds and materials and supervise the work. That way you could get what you want and the student (or other) would benefit from getting paid and learning a good skill. I agree that there aren't always times when it is convenient to do it yourself and you may not want to do it, just like I don't want to do everything. Some things appeal to me and others really don't. I hire certain people to do things and I don't feel guilty at all. It would still give you some satisfaction though of having done your own thing. Just be sure to allow a little time for a learning curve if you are both new to it. It could be a rewarding experience for both of you. Try some of your local discussion forums. I am not familiar with your area but as I am from a small fishing village in Canada but I imagine your city probably has every concievable teaching institute available. Contact them, maybe someone would do it for credit or experience in a certain course. You never know, it could open up a whole new world to you. dixiedoodle: Yes, brick. I did think about something like what you said. Pulled pages out of plan books and took them to our architect. Was told it looked "contrived." Well, it IS contrived; it's faux, after all. But I thought it looked pretty good. I just kept quiet, not wanting to show my inferior taste/poorly developed sense of aesthetics. I will bring it up again if their next proposal doesn't look any better to me. Or if I can't come up with something else meanwhile. So far, their suggestion is to put a low brick wall ending in partial brick column about half the distance across the entry area and put a cast concrete planter atop the column. I told them I don't think that fills in the UPPER half of the blank wall beside the door, which is where visual balance is actually more needed. So, I said I would opt for their other idea of the full-height metal grille "or something similar, TBD."

You could try Room & Board, but prices can get up there (although if you live where they have a warehouse/outlet--Minneapolis, I've heard the sales there are fantastic). You might find it more cost-efficient, tho, to look at similar tables as a whole-- base and top-- at sources like CB2 and West Elm. My experience has been that the tops screw on, so whatever top you're planning, you'd probably be able to conceal any unnecessary hardware. You've been scoping out your local craigslist, right? Even a really bad-finish piece could be worked on by you or a place that does powdercoating (I took my black steel Crate & Barrel TV/media stand to a place that normally does stuff like custom motorcycle painting, and for $100 it gave it an aluminum finish--better for my decor for less money than it'd cost to buy something else.

Home Depot has grills (or whatever they are called) in metal thats often used in making those old fashioned heater covers. I can't even think of the name of them right now. Maybe I should just go to bed. At our HoDe they are at the end of one of the lumber aisles next to the window order desk.

Thanks. This is more the idea IÂm looking for, rather than the floor register type grill. This general type of thing, though not 10" wide like this is. ThatÂs part of the problem, if you do a search for metal "grille" or "grill" you get mostly the wrong kind. But those 4 inch ones on Ebay could be a backup.

Sometimes HL has them on sale cheap. If you have one near you may want to check there...

I've been to Hobby Lobby. Nothing rectangular. Seeing all the decorative metal there was where I got the idea. I'm not sure if all their stores carry the same stock: if its worth checking other stores.

is there a Ross store in your area? They often carry metal wall art pieces.
You might also check garden departments of HD or Lowe's for trellises and fence pieces that might work.

Lots. And it was about $20. It might save you money.

You might also try in the garden section of Lowe's. Last year, I got a couple of small trellises for about $2.00 each during their clearance sale.
