Bachelor Pad on a tight budget

Our son is getting discharged from the Marine Corp and wants to have his own apartment. The trick is he doesn't have any furniture, belongings - nothing but his duffel bags.

To make matters worse, we (mom & dad) live too far away to bring any left over furniture but have offered to help him get set up in his own place. We have been searching garage sales, CL and the newspaper the last couple of days.

So far we purchased a comfortable set of couches in red, clean lines without a lot of pillows. Will be picking them up tomorrow so can post photos then.

My questions, on a really tight budget how would you set up a bachelor pad for a 22 year old, single guy??

What would you envision as a cool place to come home too. Do we try to go the Pottery Barn look with dark woods, branches in a corner, or do young men like something totally different?

What color palette would work with deep red sofa and loveseat?

Thanks for the ideas/Bonnie
