The world's longest yard sale, is just awesome.. you can go all the way from Ohio to Al. on side roads so you are not on main interstates.. we live in Kentucky and we only went about 75 miles and it was all along route 27 in Kentucky and most along the Ohio River.. you will go into Covington Kentucky coming over the bridge from Ohio and there are some really neat places that have some neat items.. then you will hit some of the rural areas.. some of the fields will have many vendors in it, there are lots of bed and breakfast along the way to stay over night in or route 27 is not that far off the main interstate. you can find motels and hotels .. make sure you wear something that is cool and good shoes. When we went it was really hot out.. so take along some water in your vehicle to drink. do not pay the first price you see on the item.. many will bargin with you... as the sale comes to a close you will get better bargins.. go and have fun.. I have been watching it now for years on HGTV and they all seem like they are having a ball..

Thanks for asking, Jroot. It went okay, but not nearly as well as I thought it might. I think I sold one brug, people just don't know what they are! Some tomatoes, but mostly hostas and echineceas. Met some nice neighborhood people though, and it did pay for all the bags of compost and potting soil that I bought. I guess I am more of a plant fanatic than my neighbors, although when people wanted to chat, I did tell everyone who would listen about my political tomato, the Rouge D'Irak. I sold a few of those because people were interested and aghast! Many people did ask if I do this every year, and plan to come back. So that's good!!!

I just sent off a note to Big Lots asking about canning jars. Apparently they go by local store demand. If they have skids full, and these sit for more than a few months of canning season, they won't send off any the next year apparently. I suggest that if your local Big Lots has no jars, send off a note to them through their web site. I don't mind using a jar over, but to just buy used old jars, gives me another issue that I must carefully inspect each one, for cracks, chips, and most importantly heat stress. The heat stress can only be done with a polariscope I believe, unless you just want to fill a jar with hot water and run it through a whole canning process to see if it will crack. Its like buying a pig in a poke, or that 'infamous' box of chocolates (Forrest Gump)! Older jars over about 4-5 years are actually pints and quarts, whereas todays are in liters.

I like to shop at local thrift stores. Many years ago, I had to move out of a 4th floor walk up. I had an old 27" TV that needed to go. I didn't want to pay to have it taken away so I went to the thrift store. I saw a nice young man looking at the TV's. I asked if he would be interested in one for nothing. He asked what the catch was. I said all he had to do was come over and carry that heavy monster down the stairs and it was his! Problem solved! He brought his girlfriend and I gave her a few sundry items I knew I wouldn't need as well. They really appreciated it as they were expecting a child. I've used Freecycle, yard sales, Craigslist and my own lawn to get rid of stuff. Always makes me feel good when it goes to someone who I can tell really needs it.

You will want to have others confirm this, but it looks to me like tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), which is an exotic invasive that spreads into wild areas and creates problems for native vegetation. On the east coast its sale or transport is prohibited by some states, and I know it is a problem in at least some parts of CA. If others confirm the ID, you don't want to plant it - instead dispose of it.
