decorating vs. hiding

I'd be laughing if this were YOUR husband, but.... My husband and I are having table wars. We inherited a nice quality but out of style DR table from his parents and it came with lovely white plastic table pads to put under a tablecloth He thinks we should leave them on all the time to protect the finish. I take them off, then a couple of weeks later there they are again! What are we saving it for?

I recently just threw out the sheets he kept draping over the couches. I actually started that to protect the couch because it was raining and the dogs would come and go through the doggy door. But it was not meant to be a fixture! When I went to visit his mother in her Alzheimers place, I saw that he had bought three of those little tie on chair seat pads, (grape pattern) and put two on her little couch, and one on the wingback chair. Oh my gosh!

He is turning in to his mother! She used to lay plastic runners on the carpet and fuss at her kids for stepping off of it. When they retired, they sold their beautiful home and for two years lived out of a Winnebago. When they sold it four years later it was just like new because they never took off that plastic sheeting that was over the carpet when they bought it. Would you believe she would use the same piece of dental floss for a week? What is the point of having nice things if they are going to be draped in rags? I am doomed aren't I?
