I've found that the compost-ability of wine corks depends on the terroir. On the one hand, the 1968 Bordeaux Chateau Margaux, the Montrachet 1978 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, yer 2004 Domaine d'Escausse La Croix Petite, Gaillac, an' them 1999 and 2000 Giacomo Marengo La Commenda, Tenuta del Fondatore Chianti Riserva compost pretty good. But don't even try with the 2003 Domaine Chante Cigale Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Those corks will be gumming up your tiller, sticking to your pitchfork tines so ya gotta scrape them off constantly, and popping up in your potting soil for years.

Wine corks idea is so cool! In our last project we did a small desk in the kitchen with a magnetic fabric panel, the owners had small children and didn't want any tacks that could potentially fall out... I thought it was pretty nice, but next time instead of paying extra for the magnetic fabric I am going to put a thin piece of metal on the substrate and then wrap with a fabric of clients choice..

You can probably buy new ones fairly cheaply from a "make your own wine" place. They might save used ones for you too although they might not have many used. Why not call one near you and ask or ask a nearby restaurant that serves wine, or the place where people return their used bottles? (Many people bring them back with the corks stuck in them.)

Hi Destruct05, We have been carrying cork in our showroom for over 10 years now. It is one of the most underrated and often overlooked flooring options. The style we carry comes in a click lock system under the brand IpoCork. This is available in a variety of colors and patterns. Since cork is naturally porous it is extremely difficult to dent and surprisingly durable. We have this flooring installed in our office (in fact I am sitting on it as I am writing this). This is one of the only flooring options that work well with rolling office chairs. If you decide to roll the chairs directly over the cork, it will leave some wear pattern over extended use. The good thing about the click system is that they are easily replaceable if a few planks are damaged. If you are concern about environmental issues, most cork is harvested from Portugal Cork Oak trees by removing the bark and leaving the tree intact. It is a rapidly renewable resource making it very sustainable. Hopefully you will give cork a consideration for your next flooring project and please feel free to reach out to us if you have additional questions. Many photos are available in our gallery of past projects if you want to get some design ideas. Andrew - Unique Wood Floors
