Crackle kitchen cabinets?

Can you put a crackle paint finish over prefab wood finished kitchen cabinets with out a base coat? And preferably without sanding? any suggestions on how to do this? I want to put a white topcoat and let the wood show through. The cabinets are new, so they have not gotten greasy yet.

In surfing around on eBay, I found this page with some neat ideas. This lady recommends primer first but mabe she can help you with your crackle questions. She also has some good T2T hints on the main page.
