WOW ! I just finished going through all 150 posts. I missed a bunch of houses as we were cross-posting. I am so impressed with the love each of us has for the area in which we live and the people whose lives we share.

This has been one of the NICEST threads ever. Thank you all for the treat of seeing "where you stay" as we say in the South. I hope others will continue this thread. c

awm03 - I have asked my mother before about the address, and she doesn't remember. She was a grown woman when my grandparents lived in that house. My mom grew up on Ardsley-on-Hudson???, NY and in Winnetka, Ill. (outside of Chicago) while my grandfather worked in both NYC and Chicago.

By all means, post your home! That way, we get to see the before and after the renovations. :)

The back of my home is so blah. Tried to talk my DH into letting us build a pergola to no avail. The back needs help! Then I tried the curtain thing on the porch (working on that now) however, it is not going well. :( Anyone need about 6 painters tarps? lol

kbmas0n - Your new home looks just like I envision our next one being. Any inside pictures yet? I'd love to see the floor plan. And your husband reminds me of my own...that's exactly what he would be doing!!

All of these homes are so lovely and so well loved. I can tell how much each one is cared for which stands out more than anything else!

Autumn, oicu, jdez, skyangel -- Thanks for the comment on the Blanco sticker. It does look like someone tried to remove it, and now it is warped :/ I would like it to stay on so as not to leave any residue or something, since it does look like it is meant to stay. Oicu, we have the same sink, but different colors. Ours is truffle. It was our original choice to match the faucet, but I went back and forth between that and metallic gray. Jdez, nice sink! That was another option I was looking at, but didn't get to see an actual sample. Musicgal-- Lovely home! Robynstamps -- Almost there! We are 2 weeks away from closing. The windows that are not in the center have yet to be corrected, but we have been told we are still on track. The deck is done. Yesterday they started on the wood floors and carpet. Appliances have been coming in (basement refrigerator has 2 big dents and needs to be replaced). Closets have been started as well. Lights need to go up, and plumbing fixtures are being installed here and there. We come at the end of the day and see 2 additional faucets in, it's crazy. Still waiting on more trim material (lots were not up to the trim carpenter's standards). Other things that need to get started: kitchen backsplash, wallpaper, window treatments. Hope we make it!! We are closing on our current house too. Lots of packing going on that is why I haven't been here much. Wish us luck!

Well, it's onward and forward for us. Our house is looking so big at this point! I knew it was a big house, but it's hard to visualize from a blueprint how big your house will actually be. We are loving it though and have been very pleased with the progress so far. Framing is almost finished. The roofer is starting tomorrow. And the siding starts on Monday. Oh, and I forgot to mention that about a week and a half ago we almost lost our house. Our framers had just put up some very large trusses and had already left for the day when a huge wind storm hit. Luckily our excavator was still working at the site because it wasn't long before our walls and roof starting moving back and forth. He quickly called the framers back and they quickly tried to secure everything. There were braces everywhere and chains bolting trusses to the floor. Our framers were quite creative and they saved our house with minimal damage. We really do have the best framers working on our house and feel very blessed that our house is still standing! Anyways, here are the pictures for this month: Front of the house. I know a lot of people don't like garages that stick out from the house like this, but I love the way it's turning out for us. This is the view our guests will have when they walk in our front door. Looking out from my kitchen into the great room and dinning room. The back of our house. (The window on the upper left still hasn't been cut out). When standing in my backyard, this is when my house feels so big, but I love it!

i agree with you conceptually about only investing in thing you believe in, or rather in things you can stomach as most investments and industries have a downside if you look hard enough. eventually you get to exploited workers and poisoned rivers and solid waste. i personally struggled with the payday investment i made. the return was high, but i did not want to be associated with it. i said no for about 6 months. over that six months i learned how they (where my money is now) did business. after i understood it i had a hard time thinking of it any differently than a bank. they both loan money based on ones ability to earn money and pay it back. the only difference is the duration and the size of the loan. a bank allows me to spend money i don't have on a credit card and then charges me 13-18% until i pay them back while they themselves are leveraged 10 to 1 on those dollars loaned. the payday place will only loan me money that will be covered in my NEXT paycheck and charge me a flat fee of $5 or $10 while they themselves have a dollar for every dollar they loan out. when i look at it like that i really had no problem with the payday place, but started to have them with the banks. the payday places are not dragging the economy down because of their recklessness. they are also not enslaving an entire generation by offering them credit they cannot pay back. there are people who use them recklessly, and it is real easy to point them out because they are the fringe. it is a little harder to point out the middle class suburbanite who is a slave to their credit card and bank because they get up and go to work each day and keep a nice yard but are living on credit. both industries lend money and both are technically guilty of charging people who don't have money. they are in business to make money, not give it away. in the end neither is good nor bad just as fire is neither good nor bad. the good or bad all depends on who uses it and how they use it. the payday places service a far less afluent and unsophisticated clientele and therefore gives them very little wiggle room to abuse the system. if they want to stay one paycheck behind for the rest of their lives, that is about all they can do. the bank will let me get decades behind because they assume i am responsible and won't let it come to that but do little to stop me and recently have even encouraged me to do so. in my mind it is a match compared to the bonfire. both can be abused, but the potential abuse of a credit card is far greater. but there may be other payday places that have different policies than where i invested. mind you i don't have equity in the payday placeï¿½"they borrowed money from me to lend. in short my money is on deposit to be lent out just as if i put it in a savings account for the bank to lend out on a credit card loan. the main difference is my rate of return is almost 10 times higher but not FDIC insured. the only thing i do struggle with is the 10% they charge for cashing checks. this is outrageous in my opinion. i can't understand why anybody would do that unless they were unable to cash it elsewhere and i won't speculate as to why. but in the end they have their reason and are paying a premium for it. and with that i leave it. cigarettes are another issue and i am totally with you. i feel the same way about other products as well most are not as overtly damaging, but their products do carry liability and they push them with abandon to those who are hurt by them. not just talking guns and alcohol. a few minutes watching saturday morning cartoons was an eyeopener to the type of products marketed to kids. slap a mcdonald's logo on a bucket of mud and i think my kids would want to eat it. a friend of mine who is militant about his hate for phillip-morris and smoking in general (i think he lost a parent to lung cancer) holds half his portfolio in tobacco stocks. he justification was that it "those people" are going to annoy him with their smoke and take his taxes in healthcare, they are going to pay him for it. an interesting take on moral investing practices, but for him it makes sense. i respect your desire to not follow my practice of investing in payday lending. we not only have to undderstand our investments, but repect if not love them. i do not love payday lending, and to be honest would rather be elsewhere, but for the time being it is a good place and i am no so morally apposed to money lending as to not take the opportunity. i do however own no bank stocks for obvious reasons, i think their model is risky. i also think they are on the more unethical side of business. they have laws and loopholes that allow them to do things that are illegal to any other company. id it because we need their services and that is what it takes, or is it because they have power to influence if not make laws that favor them? i think recent events have shown us it is a little of both. before i sound too anti-establishment, let me say i think financial institutions are important and necessaryï¿½"ie. banks, insurance companies, the US government, the FED, and even payday lenders. BUT they are in busniness to make themselves rich, not us. if you do not understand what they are doing, how they make money, or worse, what you are doing, they will take advantage of you. thus education. it is through education that you can see the smoke and mirrors they use to make you feel good about making them rich at your expense. one of the most ubiquitous is the home mortgage. i am emphatic that the most expensive ways to buy a house are in this order; cash, paid off early mortgage, continually refinanced mortgage, a 15-year note, a 30-year note, ARM, variable rate, interest only, and deferred interest-AKA sub-prime being the cheapest. that said, i don't like differed interest as it assumes the risk in the real estate market and if used by the uneducated or irresponsible it can (and has) blown up in the borrowers face. what does the bank want you to do? they love you to take out a 30 year and refinance every few years or pay it off early. if you are going to take it to term, they prefer you take out a 15-year because it makes them more money and that is why they have a cheaper rate to take itï¿½"they need to give you incentive to do what benefits them and think you are getting the better end of the dealï¿½"if it makes them more money, how can it also save you money and show up in two places at once? this all sounds like hericy i know. but where do we get our financial education from? our bank? alan greenspan has a nice quote about the variable interest only mortgage being the best deal out there if people only knew how to use it and the 30 year not serving its customers as the think. i will see if i can find it. the mortgage subject was perhaps the most eye-opening and influential education i ever had in finance. it is the lesson that taught me to see the whole equation and not look at a financial strategy in a vacuum. it taught me to understand finance on a macro economic level to understand how to best use products on a micro economic level. it is painful and feels like you brain is removed and turned around and put back in. but i assure you it is all true and useful information, but it requires the user to be responsible for their financial life and some are not willing to do this and for them it is not wise to have control. just as fire in the hands a of one is destructive and to another the opposite. what i am talking about is basic business financeï¿½"in short figuring out the lost opportunity cost and the taking the greatest margin. if done properly with understanding risk is minimized and growth is maximized. some will refuse to believe, but that does not prove those strategies wrong. i myself do not practice whole-heartedly all the strategies i know an believe because of issues regarding timing, my own laziness or whatever. this does not mean i don't acknowledge their strengths or potential. but it serves me to understand alternatives. there are many i have encountered on this forum and in other places who flat out throw up a wall and won't even try to understand that there are several strategies to use in every situation and they all have merits. my beef is with those who claim merits that are not truly there or ignore others. those who emotionally attach themselves to dogma that was sold to them without trying to understand. i have been guilty of this and still am at times and it only hurts myself. when i have a few hours to spend with a calculator, i will start a new thread and actually run the numbers on the most popular mortgage products side-by-side including paying cash. i will treat all as equals. it is amazing how different the outcome is from popular beliefs, but if you look at who is selling the mortgages and the information i guess it is not shocking. it won't prove anything other than which is the most expensive in terms of money and what risks are inherent in each scenario. the individual would have to choose which is best for them. the problem is that most choose the wrong thing for what they claim to want. if you know how they each work you can choose more appropriately for your goals whatever they may be.

House I designed and planted all the plants and shrubs myself. Of course I needed a big truck and manpower for the two trees. My old rescue girl. Back yard and the "BOSS" Foyer to game room Area Front porch, steps and walk way diy bricking is done,the cement area below is now a bricked step. Next the back porch and patio. The picture you have seen a thousand times. Living room you have seen a thousand times. Miles of nature preserve for walking,biking or horses just around the corner. A mile down this path leds to a state park with some great kayaking and canoeing. 12 minutes to the beach And, since I'm shameless...this 4/3 house on 1 1/4 acre is in P.B. County and will be up for sale in a year or so. I best get a better camera and let someone else take the pictures lol.

So much fun to look at all the different homes. We had the house built in 1999. I've always preferred older homes (love the character), but couldn't find one in the area we wanted so we built instead. What we love best is our setting--large wood lot in a neighborhood where homes are set far off the road and away from each other. We've seen foxes, rabbits, black bear, wild turkey and many beautiful birds just while sitting our our porch. Waking to the songbirds on a summer morning is so wonderful! (By the way, please ignore the overgrown front yard--just returned from a two week vacation!)

wow, most people that post in this forum must have huge families. I'd get lost in most of these houses, but they are beautiful. Do you guys have to have house keepers to take care of them?

newhomebuilder - your mom lived in Winnetka? That's about 5 miles from where I live now and I went to High school there - New Trier. When was she living there?

Hi, I don't know the exact dates (late 30's, early 40's), but she was in school with Rock Hudson at New Trier, then she went off to boarding school when her parents moved back to NY.

Actually DS got a pretty bad concussion this past weekend.....he's fine...and I probably just worry to much...so never got outside to take a picture for the other thread. Now we're on part 2!!! Which is really really cool to see that many homes. It just makes it so much more fun to talk to everyone knowing how their personalities come across in their individual heavens.
Anyway, I really need to get one of the front (well really the back) of my home before this thread goes bye-bye. Think there will be a front of your home part 3 ???

kats, I hope you post your house too. (And I'd still like to know if you work for Harley. I have a friend who is an accountant for a local Harley dealership. It is hysterical b/c she is so NOT what you'd expect when you hear the word "Harley".)

Please remember that not all of us built or even bought our dream home. We choose our home based on location (school district!), price, condition, and size. I can't say that it reflects my personal style, but I've grown to appreciate and love it.

We live outside of Chicago, in the Northwest suburbs. The whole house pic was taken this spring before we relandscaped out front. The second picture was taken after we freshened up the front of the house. We love our house and especially love our backyard, which backs up to conservation land. We've only been here a year, having relocated from the East Coast last year.

Lots of huge homes ... here's my humble abode in Western NY, outside Buffalo .. 1964 cape which was 1300 sq feet, that I made into 2500 sq feet, on 20 acres.

Bonniee-where do you live to have such beautiful ferns out at Christmas time?? With these cold Chicago winters,our poor ferns are brought in by end of September, or a bit later, if I'm lazy. :-)

Hi shellfish........We live in MS. It really doesn't get freezing here until after Christmas. My geraniums at the front door in urns were still alive at Christmas too. Hey you aren't lazy, we just let our ferns die each year & buy more in the Spring. :) Bonnie

Everyone's homes have such character! I am enjoying this thread. My dd took this pic a few weeks ago. We live in central Ill. on 20 acres. Its alittle far from town but we love the peacefulness and the wildlife. We have put alot of work into it over the last four years,trying to do alot ourselves and save $$. Its starting to feel orderly:) Thanks to squirrel for lots of great inspiration!

my property is 1/2 mile deep and backs up to farmers fields. 5 acres around the house are cleared and 15 acres of woods with trails.

It's great here, all the farmers have all their familiy involved in their business and the farms pass thru to family members.

I used to live in the city, now I plan on living here for the rest of my life.

My rural property is all of 35 minutes from downtown Buffalo .... it's paradise to me!

I've skimmed the thread, and loved looking at all the beautiful homes! We are in Westchester County, NY, where prices are high, lots are small, and many homes lack features, like garages, that most of you take for granted. I love our house, a 1931 slate-roof Colonial, with large windows and graciously proportioned rooms. Our lot is large for this area (0.38 acre), and we have an unusually open feeling because we are on a ridge, and well above the rooftops of the houses behind us, our street has a grassy median and we are relatively far from the houses across the street, and there is an empty lot on one side (the house on the other side is 9' from us!) We do not have a master bath or an eat-in kitchen, or a family room, and the floor plan does not work particularly well for our family, and the bathrooms are old and awful (one now being renovated), but I love the house.

These photos are several years old. I am planning to take some new ones and start a "curb appeal" thread, because we desperately need new landscaping in the front.

Brutuses! love your home especially because it reminds me of my maternal grandmothers. I spent many happy hours rocking on that front porch in her lap while she told me stories of her growing up years in alabama. What is the color of your siding? it is so pretty!

pamg, *sigh* what a dream property you have. I guess it will have to be some other life...we're getting too old to have some fantastic thing like that happen to us. I just love big meadowlike spaces, esp. right in front of woods.

I must say am missing any modernist homes...looks like jakabedy's house of fabulosity, which is certanly true modernist, and then, amazingly, my humble 1978 homestead is the most "modern" looking...let's see if anyone has any modern houses here!

Ohhhh, I love looking at everyone's homes! I really hope these threads (#1 and #2) don't slide off into GW oblivion. Our front portal (covered front porch) is in the middle of a badly needed redo. The packrats chewed up my last cushions and I recently finished making all new ones. DS has just refinished the chairs for me, but I still need to do the tables. I'd love to post pics of them but there's still too much reno stuff piled around out there now. Here's one from before, though. Our house is shaped like a boomarang, and this is the west wing of the house: the living room, dining room, kitchen, family room and study part of it:

I've been away on vacation, so I'm just catching up with these threads. SO MANY gorgeous homes!!! My favorites are the old beauties (even with the maintenance required and their idiosyncrasies). I'd live in an old home in a heartbeat, but my husband is afraid of problems that might be hidden so we compromised with an older looking new home.

Here's a photo I took today. We've been here for 1-1/2 years, and we're still working with the landscaping (among a million other projects), but it's getting there! (At least we have grass (somewhat); we couldn't say that last summer!) Someday I'd love to adorn the porches with hanging ferns and/or window boxes mounted on the railings, but other projects have taken up our time and money, so they will have to wait.

I love drooling over all these gorgeous homes. I hope the thread continues!

Kats, I didn't see your new home here. Did I miss it or are you being shy?! I'd love to see that view again!

All these homes are just beautiful. This is better than any magazine! I'm glad I don't have to pick a favorite. It would be impossible.

Here's a link to a few photos of our house. I included a couple of "before" shots to show the progress we've made. We have 5 acres and at first I had no idea if we'd be able to grow anything, especially grass. Things are finally filling in.

Thanks, Marisany! We do have beautiful views. I've always wanted to take a photo, and you gave me the push to do it. I photo-stitched a panoramic view from the upper porch and other one from the turret. They're very wide photos, so I'll just put links to them so they don't mess up this thread.

Wow I had to go back a bit to find this thread. And it's #2!!! DH says I'll be late to my own funeral! Well, at least I got some pictures taken so I can show off my little slice of heaven. Over the year that we've been here we've put in our grass and I think about 40 trees (will need another 20 or so). Our shrubs are starting to take root and flowers are blooming but need to get a little more established. The natural landscaping you see at the bottom of our lot is a county requirement, can't plant anything but natural flora.

Hey hoosiergirl....looks like you're taking nice care of one of my all time favorite building forum homes! Love your house!

This is actually the back of the house but it's the view anyone driving up our street sees.....

Wow, you all have such amazing homes! Just beautiful. Here is my humble abode. We are painting and adding shutters in a few months (though I don't have a clue what colors) and landscaping in the Spring (agian no clue) but here it is "as is".

We live in the greatest neighborhood anyone could ask for. You can actually see a home in the first (right side at roof line) and third pictures (again right side). From our window vantage we can see the brown house but not the other because our garage blocks it. All lots surrounding us are built out. There will be no more homes right here. That's because the mountains behind in both the first and second photos are actually federal land (no building allowed). And, the mountain you see in the third photo is a state park, (again no building). It took a long time to get this lot but I think we are extremely blessed and I pinch myself daily....can you tell I love my home/area/neighbors! LOL

This is a picture I took last year of our east view from the upstairs gameroom. Not sure if this is the view picture you are talking about. And it's not a real good picture of the view. This was taken in early morning (to early for summer smog) during our SoCal fires. Seemed like all of SoCal was on fire then and there was a layer of smoke everywhere.
