Inset vs. Overlay cabinets
Comments (50)"...this thread is 3 years old..." "And your point is what?" The point is that we don't resurrect old threads unless it's an update to the originating post. When a thread is this old, it's doubtful the originator will be back since most people disappear after completing their Kitchen. A few will come back, but it's by far the exception rather than the rule. Just resurrecting to say an old thread is "useful" forces threads off the first page that need help TODAY/NOW, not years ago. If you find the thread useful, great! Read it and move on. Others will find it as well just like you did without it being bumped up to the first page. In all honestly, most of us have started to ignore bumped up threads, in part b/c we've had a lot of Houzz Pros bump old threads with replies of marginal (if any) value just so they can draw attention to themselves. We've also noticed non-pros posting similarly -- so we ignore them. (I opened this one accidentally - I didn't check the start date first or I would have ignored it as well.) If you have a question that's not answered by this or any other thread, then it's really best to start your own thread with an informational Subject/Title. You will not only get more replies, but replies relevant to your question....See MoreInset or Full Overlay Framed Cabinets....that is the question
Comments (12)Adding to the above, a frameless cabinet is a box, 5 sides of the cube, with a door attached to it. A framed cabinet is a cube with a hole cut out of the 6th side -- creating a frame around the opening on that last side. In either case, the cabinet door covers the 6th side. In the case of a frameless, the door covers the entire opening and the sides of the box material. A framed cabinet has the option of covering all of that frame (full overlay) or just part of it (partial overlay). Maybe that will help you picture the difference. If a frameless cabinet is well built, it should be just as strong as a well made framed cabinet. You may also hear them called European cabinets because they have been the standard in Europe. The IKEA cabinets that seem to be a gold standard for budget cabinetry are frameless cabinets. I have maple painted Brookhaven and WoodMode cabinets as well as knotty cherry WoodMode. All of them are frameless and we love them. We got a lot more drawer space we have much better storage and usable space even though we were limited to the same footprint and took out a corner pantry....See MoreThoughts on 2-tone q/sawn oak lowers and painted uppers? Comments (7)I am a huge fan of 2 tone kitchens, but I am also biased as I have had this in my kitchen for about 8 years now. I was worried I might tire of it or it would become overly trendy, but hasn't happened yet. I also love the quarter sawn oak. I grew up in a huge old farmhouse and many of the built ins were the big old oak. I think the two would go very well together. Would it go with the rest of the house? Is your other woodwork painted? what about floors? Also meant to add that my lowers are stained charcoal, but another member here had stained wood lowers in her old kitchen that looked lovely. Maybe she will post some pics. This post was edited by daisychain01 on Thu, Jan 8, 15 at 7:34...See MoreKitchen Cabinet Remodel Design Help! Light vs Dark, Inset vs. Overlay
Comments (20)“That mix of grease and dust was the worst cleaning job I've ever had. I would never design a gap between cabinets and ceiling, unless I felt positive I would always have the money to pay a cleaning service.” @mcarroll16 - it sounds like there was no proper hood exhaust in your parents’ kitchen. I have 9’ ceilings, and on one wall the cabinets meet the ceiling, and on another wall I have 42” upper cabinets, 3” crown and a gap to the ceiling. I place wax paper up there (it’s the perfect width) to collect any dust or grease that might float up there, and twice a year, when I change smoke alarm batteries, I pick up the wax paper and put down new. Many times I just leave the wax paper there because it is so clean it does not need to be changed. I have a good hood exhaust. With a good hood exhaust, you would not have had such a cleaning chore in your parents’ home. It is quite expensive to take cabinets to meet a 9’ or 10” ceiling. Many people would rather invest in a good hood and correct ductwork for it. Indoor air quality is more important than ever these days....See Moresweeby
