Hi everyone newbie with a ?

I have a chance to get this cabinet , what would you do with it if you got your hands on this?

It has glass shelves that aren't in it at the moment. It used to be a ruffle cabinet. Would love to get some ideas..Thanks....

Meant to say it used to be a rifle cabinet, my spelling isn't always that great..Sorry..

My DB and SIL had one similar to that. They installed glass shelves in it and have it setting at the end of their hallway with her collection of gravy boats in it. Looks nice! I would think it would be great for any type of display. Grab it! LOL

Congrats on the new home. 1) Nutsedge is challenging whether you are trying to stay organic or not. Most chemicals don't work very well on it although there are a few products that specifically target this weed (sledgehammer etc.) The problem is the "nut" part. This weed forms little nut shaped bulbs in its roots a energy reserves. If you kill of the top, it just regrows from the "nut". The quickest way to get rid of them is just to dig them up - dig, not pull. If you pull, you will likely just get the topgrowth and miss the nut. 2) Getting on a consistent watering schedule and using organic fertilizers will slowly improve the soil. For a much quicker fix: Water for 15 minutes. Let it soak in. Water for 15 minutes. Let it soak in. Do this a bunch of times in a row until you can actually get a shovel into the ground. Then, wait a day and rent a plug aerator. Make a couple of passes over the whole area. Then, sprinkle a layer of compost over everything and then rake/broom the area to knock some of the compost into the holes. 3. Bermuda won't grow in shade. You can plant St Augustine grass there if you really want grass. I don't think it looks very good next to bermuda though. Personally, I would make beds, patios, sitting spots etc out of the shady spots. Grass likes to grow in the sun. If you walk in the forest, you aren't going to see a ton of grass growing there. It is a lot easier to follow nature than to fight against it.

Anything that's a nectar plant for butterflies, and has a short flower stem is fair game. your county ag center should have a list of bee friendly plants for you, too. Crepe myrtle, cassia, gallardia (as mentioned) milkweed, porterweed, citrus, zinnia, bee balm, palm trees, all work. Spanish needle, portulaca...I've seen our bees on our roses... Do you want to see bees or to keep bees? If you want to see bees, place a shallow plate of 2parts sugar and one part water outside. You'll see bees. Foraging bees tend not to be defensive, so you can USUALLY observe them safely. If they buzz you, walk away. MTCW. If you wantt o keep bees, get in touch with your local beekeepers association and take some classes. A cold start has a steep learning curve...and can be expensive.

There was a Cocolalla gardener on this forum and one down the road at Careywood - surprisingly, since these aren't very large communities. I lived and gardened near Bayview years ago. My brother lives north of Sandpoint. With so much variation in elevation, orientation and relationship to nearby mountains - you will have to learn a lot about your garden site thru experience. There are a few things to "insure" better success. One of them, as Idaho_Gardener says, is to select varieties suited for a cool spring and short season (and all those cool nights). The Bayview garden was a long time ago but Polar Vee sweet corn and Sub-Arctic tomatoes were the only choices I had for those veggies, as best as I knew. There are other choices now for short-season areas. (My garden is at a bit lower elevation now, so I've got more choices.) I still grow an SE corn that claims good cold-soil emergence. Also, I don't grow any tomato rated for an 80 day maturity. Early Girl is a standard but you may also like Bloody Butcher, Stupice, and many of the cherries are 70 day (or less) varieties. I was surprised how well an acquaintance could grow squash on the hill above Careywood with an eastern exposure. An eastern exposure is much better than having no sun in the morning. I have had trouble with winter squash. I grew acorn squash near Bayview but the 3 acorns I've grown in my current ground haven't had good flavor. I grow Buttercup each year and it seems to just "make it" for maturing adequately. This year, I'll try a kabocha, again. Mildew will overtake peas at the end of their season and you may have problems with red spider-mites on beans late in theirs. I grow few pole beans because of those kinds of problems and put more trust in quicker producing bush beans. You may be able to plant those right thru June for a longer harvest. It is hard to say when you can expect your last frost. Overcast skies are much more common the farther up the valley one goes. Cool weather in June can be very hard on the warm-season plants. Still, you need to take some risks. I expect late May and June to be frost free and just hope that the final week of June is actually warm. Currently, the temperatures are below normal in our part of the world. I think that you should be able to plant spinach, lettuce and onion sets as soon as you can get out there. I've got my potatoes in the ground, along with sweet onion plants. The flowering of the Oregon Grape tells me when to plant peas. Snow peas can go in earlier; they don't have as much sugar and aren't as prone to rot (smooth seed rather than wrinkled). Put some emphasis on leafy greens early in the season. They may burn up in July but with no afternoon sun - your garden may be a real good place for greens right thru the growing season. About all I can think of right now. Marble is a soft stone, I have it in my master bath. Looks great BUT its a master bath and doesn't get nearly as much traffic as your kitchen and living area. Go porcelain. Slightly less money but much easier to maintain and durability is superior. My 2 cents

I was wondering if I should paint it, or just leave it the way it is?? do you think it would look good done in a cream color or maybe a white???

well not sure I "should" be answering because i,m a gun enthueist who needs a cabinet and i,m usally against painting nice wood but .
nice find if you get it actually the reason I responded was this might be a good time to use some glass etching cream
maybe some faux stained glass? there is a blank slate here and a lot of room .
if etched then it would lend itself to paint/antiquing.
there are a lot of good products out there for one step refinishing. Rick

Glass etching thats a thought I didn't have. Although I have never done that before. hhhhhhhmmmmmmmm......

I needed an etched pattern on my back door to break up the view of the lovely garage! I had painted a wheat motif in my kitchen, so I just made a stencil of the enlarged wheat bundle on cardstock, cut it with an exacto, and sprayed it with frosted glass paint. It is on the inside, so it doesn't get very dirty, but I don't think it would come of super easily, as I had to clean up overspray with a razor blade. My friend did sort of the same thing on her gun case with an all-over lacy stencil pattern, bottled frosted craft paint, and a stencil brush. She did it on the inside of the doors, and it has stood up very well for many years. If you ever decide you don't want the pattern, or want a new one, it is easier to change than real etching, but you get the same effect.

Thanks Sheryl, If I were to do any etching, I would most likly do it that way, because if i messed up it would be an easy fix..

If it were mine, I'd paint it, put some chicken wire in the door and use it to display my chicken collection. :o)

I did go get it, and it was much nicer then the picture showed, I also ended up giving it to my friend who came along with me to pick it up. she loved it so much, I just had to give it to her. She is going to paint it white, and use it in her huge bathroom to store her towels and such.

Someone here (DinaBear) redid a gun cabinet into a China Cabinet. It came out pretty cool. I did a search for gun and found it.

I tried to post a link to just the picture ... but I guess because it's already posted here it wouldn't let me.

Anyway ... this T2T project stood out in my mind ... I know If I come across a gun cabinet for free I wouldn't hesitate to grab it up in a minute.

That's a great use for that cabinet.

DH traded for a very rustic cedar one and it goes perfectly in our family room. He originally wanted it for his guns but that made me too nervous, so I've convinced him to put in shelves and he stores his 'collections' of guy junk...cowboy memorailia, rocks, stuff like that. It's got bright brass colored hinges, so we're looking for rusty ones (I might try to faux finish them) to go with the rustic look of the room. I also nailed some rusty horseshoes on the sides and a rusty finish wall hanger thing, it's a row of running horses, along the bottom of the door.
