This house had a compactor when we moved in 6 1/2 years ago. I'd always thought they were relics of the 60s and 70s but I quickly became a fan. When we redid the kitchen, I upgraded to a nice new Kitchenaid compactor:) I LOVE my trash compactor and wouldn't be without it. Two of my sisters also recently put in compactors and love them too. We actually added a 2nd one in the pantry for recycables. They get mildly compressed so we can easily go a week without them being all over the place. We had a pullout in the temporary kitchen during the remodel and I couldn't wait to get my compactor back. The pullout bin seemed to fill up within about 1/2 a day of emptying the trash, and it would spill out the top all over into the cabinet. It drove me mad :) I love that I only have to empty once a week on trash day. Sure, it is a little heavy but easy for me or DH to lift. Häfele used to have one...I don't know if they still do. MeToo, a GardenWeb member from several years ago, posted how to install with framed cabinets. Let me see what I can find.

I don't see a sink window, but even with a window this was bad design from the get go, and will remain that even with cabinet jiggle. Leave it alone, The dishwasher door when open is a leg knocker no matter what. Adapt your prep and clean up habits a wee bit, with a simple yank of a the garbage can from its housing cabinet when you need it, ......or simply add a small can beneath the farm sink to use during prep / meal clean up and transfer after.. The dishwasher door isn't open all darn day long. It opens and closes for prep.clean up, and emptying for stowing. There's no convenient run of sink/dw. trash, that DOESN'T require six feet and more, and adjacent set ups for a sink and DW are never great.. You won't die. A small can beneath the sink, and an easy peasy transfer.......carry on. What's done is done. Your electric and plumbing are in place, and the design error for real convenience is more than trash anyway. Not the end of humanity , that's for sure : )

They are Blum Blumotion drawer glides in the custom cabinets for our new build. I had to specifically ask for this when talking to the cabinet maker. It was never offered as an option. I had the same trash cabinet function in our old house with Diamond Cabinets semi-custom cabinets, although I don’t know if they were Blum. The kitchen designer on my remodel was suggesting a trash cabinet and I explained I didn’t want one due to many of the issues as stated in this post. She’s the one who informed me I can get them with the Diamond Cabinets. These may be an option with many other cabinet brands. I don’t think many consumers know about them and therefore not a highly sought after accessory.
