What do you think of this island hood?

Hi all,

We have gathered quite a few quotes on custom island hoods, and are thinking the $5000.00 cost of one from Modern-aire and the like is more than we want to spend. I prefer the look of a powder coated painted one to steel. The one below is steel, but it seems we can get it powder coated a colour locally (we do have to sand down the finish first). My questions are the following:

1)Does the fan linked below, look like it will work well and reasonably quietly for a 30 inch induction cook top? Has anyone ordered a hood from this British Columbia, Canada company?

2)Do you agree that we will have success getting the fan powder coated locally? The powder coat paint supplier is right in our small town (Tiger Drylec) and is willing to supply small quantity of paint to the powder coat painter.

3)Are we best to stick with white (our perimeter cabinets are off white, and the island is to be a dark brown stain). The counters are a quartz (Bianco Drift, Ceasarstone) which has cream, grey and white colours.. I was initially thinking of a grey blue colour hood so the fan would be a feature, but am not sure if white might be better.

It has a 6'' round duct. You want one that uses at least an 8'' duct. That renders it's noise rating as highly suspect as trying to suck that much air throught that small of a duct is going to be noisy. It's a questionable import quality. Notice that it doesn't say XXX stainless steel. It merely says it's stainless steel colored. Crappy import ''stainless'' can be full of impurities and rust.

Look for something else with better specs that isn't an import.

Thanks hollysprings for your wisdom. The spes said it needed a 8 inch round duct. As per your read of the stainless specs I am perplexed. The description says: "Heavy duty 19 gauge 304 (18/8 - 1mm) stainless steel (brushed finish)" and "Full seamless stainless steel construction." Please direct me to where it refers to "stainless steel colored".

I do see that it is an import, from China I believe. It is not Modern-aire quality and you do get what you pay for.

Wow, unbelievably gorgeous. Seems you would have to first figure out what you need inside for the ventilation, then how to apply such a stone on the outside. I think most of the comments here are based on this one in the pix. You would need to figure out your ventilation requirements based on your stove/range and go from there. The appliance stores should be able to advise you. I too have a long run and the hood is our focal point. We went with a Modernaire hood, and we love the look. It's not hooked up yet, however. You might consider putting the rangetop not centered on the island so that you have 4' of prep area on one side and 2' on the other side instead of 3' and 3'. The distance to the pantry wouldn't bother me. Our pantry is off a hall just outside our kitchen/family room. We have a 12" cabinet with pull out shelves that holds the liquid ingredients we use most (oils, vinegars, soy sauce, etc), two drawers in the baking area that hold the most common baking ingredients - some flours, sugars, baking powder, etc.- a drawer for spices and herbs and a drawer for bread, jam and peanut butter. So making a trip or two per meal to the pantry for other ingredients doesn't bother me. It is a big kitchen so a small second sink would be useful even if it isn't the "prep" sink. Someplace where hand washing can be done and water can be gotten. Where in your kitchen will coffee be made or other beverages prepared? Where will baking and mixing be done? The counter outside the pantry might be a place for snack prep, baking prep and or beverage making so that might be a good spot for the small sink. We have an island rangetop and like it. aries61 - have you ordered your cabinets yet, or are you still in the planning stages? akchicago's point was very good and you may want to start another thread to solicit input into the size of your sump/capture area. Here's what we did for our wood hood with Conestoga panels. DH built a plywood box and secured it to the joists (I forget how). The cutouts are simply to reduce weight. Here you can see the stainless steel surround we added to the inside: This shot shows the sides of the hood. I'm including this as an example of a 'custom' wood hood and would welcome feedback on what's 'wrong' with ours. (I continue to think something is off with the design but LOVE the functionality - large capture area).

Has GW ever asked its forum members to track their food prep/ cook time percentage over a couple of days? I'm like Paula Poundstone on 'Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me' surveys when I see that percentage cited. LOL. Good question. I think it would be a good one to figure out. If something's on my rangetop, I think I'm generally interacting with it, unless it's chili or something similar. As am I, but usually I find the prep time chopping, rinsing, etc takes more time than the actual cook time on top of the cooktop. Of course the exception being a stew or soup, etc. And I never prep next to my sink. Interesting because I've done it both ways and it really depended on my kitchen layout. When I didn't have enough room next to my sink like in my condo, I washed everything and then moved it to prep next to my cooktop. It worked but wasn't ideal. In the kitchen in my first house, I had a traditional L shape with fridge, sink, stove and I prepped right between the stove and the sink. It actually was the ideal layout for me. In our rental in NY, I also prep between sink and stove. In our rental here in FL the sink is literally right next to the stove so there's no room to prep there. There's also no room to prep on the other side of the sink so it means again washing things and then bringing them to the other side of the stove. It's awful. But I'm with the OP. I would not want a sink on an island. So, that makes two of us. And that's perfectly fine but why have even the cooktop in the island?

Anyone else have an opinion on the island hood I linked in my opening post? The specs look good enough to me. It is not top of the line, I realize, but is it not good enough? The Canadian company that sells this hoods gets rave reviews on homestars (on line rating of companies).

Also, any thoughts on the idea of getting it powder coated after we receive it (we will need to sand it down first so the paint sticks we have been told)?

Looks like a 8" duct to me, and also it does say that it is made with 304 stainless....most common of stainless steel

For powder coating you need to make sure your guy has worked with SS before....make sure that he uses a pretreat of iron phosphate with fluoride to make sure that the bond is good....

I would not think that you would need to do any prep work before your powder coat guy gets it...let him do it all, he is the expert...and more important if there is a problem with the finish he can not turn around and blame you

Thanks ajc71 for your help -- It is good to know about the pre-treating using iron phosphate with fluoride you described. Good info!

The shop where the vent would be powder painted is a smaller powder paint shop (the big ones are not interested in the smaller jobs). We will ensure they have worked with stainless steel. The painter expressed concerned over the brushed stainless finish and how it might stick to the paint. The vent on-line store had the same concern. They both concluded that if it was sanded the paint would adhere. The vent shop has offered to sand it for us.

Have you looked at the Costco island hoods? For reviews, check out both the Canadian and US sites.

Ontario mom - also verify if you need make up air in Canada. Most northern US cities require it - so might be worth checking in advance.

Opt for the LED lights. They will last much longer and use less energy.
