Thanks for the referral to Oncochat. It has been very helpful for me as it relates to my son with rhabdo. Also, the family issues, especially detached 1/2 sibs etc. comes up too.

You're very welcome. Although, "oncochat" doesn't sound familiar to me. Unless it's part of ACOR. At any rate, I'm glad that you're finding the support you need there. Here's the specific site within ACOR I hope you found:

Oncochat is the chatroom on the ACOR site. I will look for the rhabdo information and support group today. Thanks for the address.

DS is doing pretty well. He was hospitalized two weeks ago for a fever due to an infection of his central line. they replaced it, had him on heavy anti-biotics including one of those little pumps at home for a week. For now though, he has a lot of energy, his counts are good and he's in good spirits. We did a lemonade stand last week, he worked like a true businessman, made $45, a lot for a six year old. SGS 8 came over, got jealous and didn't want to pay for his lemonade. SD35 had invited DS, again, to spend time with SGS8 who had a cough, again, we declined. She was supposed to keep both kids, found out SGS8 was coughing, picked him up anyway so DS was odd man out again. Very clear as to who is important to them and who is not. They still don't get it and I don't think they will.

liesbeth, I agree with you and the others, but in reality, I'm not the one holding the cards. I am, after all (and lest we be reminded by some here), just the stepmom. It's really up to DH to get this one solved. I am happy to search for/book flights, etc. But I'll wait for the "go ahead" to book anything. I've suggested letting BM book the last couple flights. DH doesn't like to rock the boat. Also, and I agree with this, if we let her book the flights, we are at her mercy. When SD lived w/BM, she would book her into an airport 2-3 hours from here...every single time. We have an airport 10 minutes from our house. Granted, the airfares are a bit more expensive, but still. And although it's tempting to do the same thing to BM now that SD lives here, it's really not necessary. Nevermind the fact that SD hates long drives after getting off a plane. So, at present we have 2 options that I like: 1. Book her to and from Atlanta, allowing the 1 week visit. This will thoroughly piss her mom off, though, because she wants more time with her and she will be coming back before break is completely finished. She will still get her week, though. 2. Book her one way from Atlanta and let BM book the return flight. If we do this, SD will likely not be back home in time for her Forensics practice or volleyball conditioning. She will very likely fly SD into an airport more than 2 hours from us, and we will have no control/recourse. But BM would probably like this option better, and we'd certainly be seen as "being flexible". The option I don't like: Book SD's flights out of here before we leave for FL, and schedule her return for when we return. This will give her more time w/Mom, but cost us $300 more. Granted, in theory it would only be $150 more, but clearly BM cannot be counted on to send her portion of expenses. Other ideas? I'm running out of witty repartee or ideas to give DH.

I thought all custody cases are sealed. Is this only where I live? I thought the idea was to protect the children. If the judge had showed bias in the past, I would have thought there would have been complaints. My guess is this is very difficult to prove, and where I live it is very hard to find out info on unproven complaints. Where I live, my understanding is that Judge will only speak to child alone where child has reprsentation (eg GAL). I could be wrong, and my guess is different everywhere. In any event, this is just a status meeting. If I were the mom, and I wanted to keep custody, I would insist on evaluations, GAL, etc. All this takes time. Time is on the mothers side. Even if child says she wants to move, my guess is judge is going to be a little nervous about moving child from school where she is doing well. He certainly wont want to see another hearing a year from now with child with Cs and Ds from Michigan school. If I were dad wanting custody, as difficult as it is, I would concentrate on what I can control. I would have a writtten plan in place as to child seeing mom over summers etc. I would try to reach some compromise re CS. I would consider presenting to her before everyone goes to referee. The referee can not make anyone compromise. He/she can only tell each party the weaknesses of their case, and suggest they compromise. The problem is mom may feel that she can not receive less than what dad is asking for, and that there no point in not dragging out proceedings.

Doesn't the OP get to decide what they mean? I mean, KKNY writes "why is it a common thread that SM's...." and when I read it, not sure if she means to use the word 'theme'. That's the word I might have chosen. See, we are all from different walks of life and use different words in our day to day life. Choosing the exact words on a forum is not always so easy, especially when some people type fast as they are thinking and don't spend a lot of time deciphering the words they use and how each person that reads it will interpret it. I think the person writing the post has the best idea of what they are trying to convey, even if they choose the wrong word to say it. I see plenty of misspelled words, transposed letters (from fast typing I'm sure) and the use of the wrong words or words with more than one meaning. and KKNY, "perhaps it is part of I was good enought to get the guy -- you are worthless?" Comments like this drip with insecurity... perhaps you can remember that you were good enough to get him first. Then, you were lucky to be rid of him when he turned out to be a toad. Now, he's HER problem, not yours. Was he a prince? Is a guy some sort of prize that you think is needed to be the 'winner'? A second wife gets to bask in the joy of her marriage, just as a first wife does. It doesn't mean that she's any better or worse because she is happy & loves her husband. It doesn't mean she's better because things didn't work out with the first marriage. If you really think looks are important to the survival of a relationship and that getting the guy is some sort of reward or prize that implies they are the winner, if you really believe that, I'd suggest you get some counseling. I really hope you don't honestly think that way.

cat38 & sweeby~ Yeah. We are all aware of the risks associated with sports. But our kids have mucho athletic prowess, so we allow them to play. As mentioned, both boys (older) played hockey and ran track. One of them broke a collarbone in hockey. The other also was into downhill skiing, but not on a team...just for fun. He broke his arm 3 times over the course of 13 years, and it wasn't even competetive. SD is actually at least as athletic as her brothers, maybe moreso, given the nature of dance. Youngest swims and dances, so no major injuries from sports yet, but she has had stitches....twice! And I suspect she'll have her own set of injuries over the years. It's part of growing up active, I guess. Sure, I'll be thrilled (and surprised!) if none of them ever get injured doing "stuff", but I don't expect that. Mom's been kept in the loop from the get-go. She not furious...she's not even a little mad. I think she knows that it's just part of the game/sport. FD, I'm glad your daughter has been so fortunate to not have any injuries. And I'll bet if you wait long enough, someone on here will suggest that you sue the pencil or paintbrush maker for your nerve damage. Or better yet, your former art teachers for not teaching you proper technique for positioning yourself to prevent injury while painting. (sarcasm intended) Now for the good news: SD saw ortho/sports med guy today. He thinks she will heal well with proper rest and immobilization, and without needing surgery. He agreed that the cast shouldn't have been removed by the trainer, but said that no harm was caused. He (the doctor) removed her cast today and put her in an ankle immobilizer that she can adjust as she heals...and take off for showers. No v-ball or dance for at least another month (so, v-ball is done), and crutches for now. He's going to see her again in a couple weeks. She's still going to see the ankle guy Monday. So, hopefully, she's on the mend... And she's going to help with the musical tomorrow, as planned. She'll be taking tickets at the door, sitting in a tall chair....

I'm glad your little guy is doing well. These kids are pretty tough, aren't they?

As for the others in your family...well...sometimes ya just gotta remember this: "ya can't fix stupid". Seriously, if you can just remember that, it will help you to get through the moments when you just want to shake the livin' snot out of them.

Thanks again, I went on that rhabdo list. But, there is a Nick with a relapsed rhabdo a mom is talking about there. That is not your Nick?

No, not my Nick. I only visit the list as a nurse. I have referred many of my patient's parents to it for a source of support and to connect with other parents going through the same thing. Because, as much as I love what I do and empathize with my patients and their families, I know that I cannot fully grasp what they go through as a parent of a child with a life-threatening illness. I hope that they (and you) can find strength in numbers.
