Finally Finished! Our Kitchen Transformed (without sidesplash)

So I had previously started a thread asking opinions on whether we should install tile sidesplash. I posted to it with our final results, but that thread is not showing up in the list of topics.

So I'll just start this new one showing all the before and after pics.

Stuff we did:

Painted the cabinets with oil base paint

Added crown molding and hardware to cabinets

Formica 180FX countertops

Marazzi Revision Beige tile backsplash

New sink and faucet

Undercabinet lights

Pendant lights

New outlets and switches

Wowzzaaa now THATS a makeover. Unbelievable job. Really amazing what you can do with just painting those cabs. Your formica countertop looks really really great. I was on the fence and ultimately went with granite for mine but sometimes think I should have just gone your route, saved the money. It looks LOVELY! Pat on the back to you.

Willtv, looking again at your kitchen (I know I already replied but since I also have a small kitchen, I find your kitchen to be fascinating and just gorgeous making good use of space. It is so beautiful the way you tied everything together perfectly.). Your kitchen is one of my favorites! I really love the overall look so much! I would have never dreamed such big 24 X 24 tiles would look so amazing! There is not one thing I dislike about your kitchen. I am now thinking of Halogen lighting after seeing your kitchen since changing my bulbs to the bright white light like halogens have in my ugly Fluorescent fixture that is so outdated, gave me the look that my neighbors have with the new tiles since they have track lighting using Halogen lights. That counter is so amazing and your kitchen cabinets are so perfect going up to the ceiling. The grout compliments the tiles and allows you to see the design you did with them and how beautiful and big they are. I also like how efficient it is and probably a joy to cook in! That backsplash is so amazing to me really tying in your whole theme and I love how the cabinets go up to the ceiling with the crown molding on top. I wish I had those two big windows over my sink. That is one thing I regret that I was not patient and waited until an end unit in a good location in my townhouse complex came available since I would like to have more lighting. But I fell in love with the layout of the unit I bought, the location, the fenced in backyard, the permanent woods (I live in the preserved wetlands and the town owns the woods and will never build on them) in back of my fence for privacy, and wonderful quiet neighbors. I also had to move or sign a new lease where I was renting at a ridiculous amount I was paying since rents are so high where I live. My utilities also were so high were I was living since it was like living in a two floor tiny condo paying the water and sewer bill with a minimum fee, an electric bill and a gas bill since nothing was included in the high rent. But I love owning a place and getting to install the appliances that make my life easier that I enjoy so much, decorating it to be my taste and having a garage.

GORGEOUS! What fabulous choices . . . I kept looking at the pictures, thinking that the color LOOKED liked Adel MB, but those were definately not Ikea boxes -- your carpenter did a lovely job -- great grain on that Maple! I like how you eliminated the "step up" in the pass-thru, making it one height really gives depth and unity to the rooms (great looking family there, as well!) Thanks for the details on storage -- I like the high boxes in the pantry, the corner cabinets -- I have you bookmarked as well! Thanks also for the Xenon photo with the lights off: gives an idea on task lighting without ceiling can lights. Love your lights as well, yes, it does look like a suspension bridge. CONGRATS!

Thanks rtwilliams! We have a Nebraska furniture mart just a few minutes away so will have to go check it out and look at what they have (bet my husband won't even let me near the place). I still have my heart set on a creamy leather chair to team up with a black table .....maybe something similar to this (although I kind of wanted something with a nailhead trim too) and maybe a nice rug. And...and.... The paint that I used for the doors is Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel Latex in Satin Black. I had no idea what I was doing, so it is what the salesperson recommended. The first one I painted about 6 weeks ago, so it hasn't gotten too much wear and tear yet, but it seems to be holding up well. I was really worried about how it would clean up, but we actually scraped the popcorn off the ceiling of a room with a black door (anybody who has done this knows how much dust it generates), and it cleaned up beautifully. The true test will be the door to the garage because the dogs will sometimes scratch to go out. Not very vigorously, so we'll see how much it will take.

Wow, can't believe that's formica. It's beautiful! What a transformation, you took old fashioned oak and transformed it to a current ebony look! A serious upgrade. Great job. Enjoy!

Indeed, WOW! The cabinets look fantastic, I just love the depth of color you were able to achieve and the granite contrasting it is perfect! Going with the simple backsplash was the right choice -- the cabinetry and granite are the stars in this beautiful kitchen!!!

Wow! I am here looking for something else, and saw your brag about being finished....I just had to look. Wow. Would like some more information about your under cabinet lights....that is one of the things on my to-do list to figure out. Wow, the transformation in your kitchen is incredible!

great choices! the counter top looks awesome and the BS doesn't fight with it!

what edge did you use on the counter? what faucet? is that a kohler forte? looks like the one I'm looking at. I looked at it in real last wk and it seemed rather 'fat' - your doesn't look overly 'fat' tho.

Your cabinets really look fantastic. I would also love to know about the paint that you used and color. My bathroom vanity looks just like your before & I have been thinking about replacing but didn't want to spend the money because we were doing the kitchen at the same time. It looks great!

That looks great!! Beautiful kitchen, and I love the paint job you did ... did you do that yourself?! Great job on the backsplash, and I love your hardware. I also really like your pendants, they are understated and pretty.

Wow, thanks for all the kind words!

Yes, I did the backsplash last and knew it couldn't be too busy.

The cabinet paint we got from Lowes - Behr oil-based in the color "Sweet Molasses". It stinks and takes a long time to dry, but I think the durability is worth it. We used a liquid "Deglosser" as prep for the paint.

Yes, that is a Kohler Forte faucet, in brushed chrome. We're pleased with it.

The undercabinet lights are GE Slimline flourescents, pretty affordable. They are hardwired using the GE 24772 junction box - you can run the proper wiring in the wall from the switch to the junction box, which then lets you plug in the lamps with their included link cables.

Wow is right! Your cabs look totally new. Great job with the makeover. Everytime I softly place a plate on our hard (quartz) countertops, I get the wisdom of linoleum - especially today's complete reinvention of that product.

I am really a fan of painting the oak cabinets dark as you have done. That looks so rich and classic. I love it! You have done an amazing job. Love the BSplash with the counter tops. Great looking kitchen!

So rich and elegant. A wonderful transformation, to be sure. I love the clean, sharp, updated look without the sidespashes. Good choice, along with all the others that came together to create this kitchen.

Thanks for the additional kind words!

Counters have a bullnose edge, and the tiles are approximately 2x12, there is some variation in the height.

I love your new look, but I also love that your before pictures look like a kitchen that gets lived in! The pics with all life's stuff gathered here and there on the counters and stuck to the fridge just look like home. LOL!
