Backsplash for Typhoon Bordeaux

looking for suggestions for a backsplash for Typhoon Bordeaux. We are really struggling with this. We would like to have something simple yet complementary since there is a lot of movement and color in the Typhoon Bordeaux granite. We have 8' ceilings and the backsplash will be under the upper cabinets and to the 8' ceiling around the vent hood and kitchen window.

Hi Linda,
Welcome to the Typhoon Bordeaux club :-) It depends on your cabinet color, I think, and the overall look of your kitchen. If at all possible, definitely bring home tile samples to see how they are in your kitchen's light and at different times of the day (with your granite sample). Here's a recent thread with some pics.

I have an 1825 home and wanted something more classic so I went with subway tiles. I thought cream would look the best with TB and had over 20 different tiles on my counter. I looked at them in all different conditions - night, morning, day, afternoon... One tile seemed to go the best with most of them.

I agree with you - to go with a calm backsplash so the TB shines and doesn't distract from the counters. Glass tile may look nice too.

I still have to paint including the brick in part of the backsplash

Hi Doug, I haven't been on in a long time but glad I popped in today. Always glad to see my two favorite words "Typhoon Bordeaux"! This was my favorite for a backsplash with TB...It's Sonoma Stellar Crackle in "smoke" color. The color name is misleading. It's more of a green, and matches the greenish gray in the background of TB almost exactly. It's in a thread called Calling all Typhoon Bordeaux's To find other old threads, do a google search with your term and the word "gardenweb" in it or "site:ths.gardenweb.com". The search engine on gardenweb itself is a little limited. If you have a piece of your granite, take it with you to the tile stores. Also bring tile samples back with you to see how they look in your kitchen's light. Sometimes, you'd be surprised at what works and what doesn't :-) BTW, I ended up going for a worn travertine because it worked better with my whole space. And still loving the TB after 2 years! Can you post a pic of your slab and cabinets? Some ideas of surrounding colors in adjacent rooms and general style of home (traditional/contemporary/arts n' crafts...etc) would also be really helpful. Typhoon Bourdeau tends to have alot of color and movement (LOVE THAT!). Most people go for a simple backsplash. Material preference?... stone/ceramic/glass?

I decided against doing all glass mosaics because I think it would look too busy. The field tile would help with that, maybe. We have no objections to red (my husband loves that burgundy color, and every car we've bought in about 15 years has been red). The granite has some burgundy shades in it, but not a huge amount. No room for a display bowl or plate, unless it's doing a job like holding utensils or fruit, IMO -- everything on display has to have a function in this small kitchen. The long glass tiles don't really look purple in real life -- more like a dark brown, I think, although the camera "sees" purple. And totally agree about the yellowish small mosaics. Our granite doesn't have those yellows in it. The glass pencil rail is an interesting idea, too. Or the other pattern from BossaNova And I'm still thinking about just using the 6x6 field tiles with 2x2s for interest. Maybe using the 2x2s to form a design over the range -- with the rest of the backsplash just diagonal, maybe with a horizontal line of 2x2s about 1/3 of the way up. Or with the rest of the tile set straight but offset, maybe again with the 2x2 band. Thanks for all the great suggestions & ideas. Keep 'em coming!

dvdr, I have the same dilemma. I'm using a granite with a lot of movement, and I also adore glass mosiac. However, I think it will wind up "competing" with the granite. I'm looking for a solution. I've had suggestions to just paint the backsplash, but we are messy active cooks. I have a painted backsplash now and it's a mess. I'm considering picking a shade of color that picks up one of the movement colors in the granite, and then installing a sheet of tempered glass over that. That way I get a solid non-competing look, but the low maintenance of a solid sheet of glass.

LOL, I was going to also say that bostonpam must have picked her backsplash by now! I remember the pic with all the subways lined up. Which one (brand/color) did you go with, Pam? (...still lusting after your red range)

We are 90% sure we are getting Typhoon Bordeax. The slabs we liked seemed tohave more red in them. The backsplash tile we like is from Arizona Tile. The center dot is a perfect match for our cabinets. We're going to wait to decide on the backspalsh until the countertops are in.

I'm not sure where my message ended up but I picked American Olean biscuit. I lucked out that it was one of the cheapest. If I didn't have brick to paint in part of the backsplash to match the tile and to try to minimize the different materials/shape I would have gone with a homemade tile or a crackle tile - it has more depth.

I know this might be a little late but - when we found our typhoon bordeaux and were trying to decide on backsplash my DH had a great idea - why not use more typhoon bordeaux? Well I was surprised (cost?) and glad that he was the one to suggest it. Ours is the same layout as you're considering from countertop to under cabinets and then full height behind the cooktop with the vent hood. We also have an island that is in the same countertop. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Our kitchen was recently destroyed by a dishwasher fire so we are in the process of replacing everything. We have new cherry cabinets (still light - they have not had time to bloom) and will have typhoon bordeaux countertops. I am struggling with a backsplash that will not compete and am considering more granite to go behind the stove or very plain subway tiles so as not to compete with the granite. I like BostonPam's choices very much and am also curious how sjmitch's granite backsplash looks. Thanks for any thoughts and ideas!
