Lamp for teen bedroom & how to attach the shade?

I was at Target today looking at lamp's for DD's bedroom makeover. I'd like to get a crystal/glass ball lamp with a black drum shade. Here is the bedding and WTs we selected:

Just the dotted duvet and zebra sheets:

Just the valance which I'm thinking of pairing with some white voile panels.

Walls will be painted BM Bahaman Sea Blue.

I'm a bit confused about the size of the lamp, though. Most of the lamps in the teen/dorm section seemed to be quite small. I'm wondering if they are meant for desks or nightstands? DD does like to sit on her bed to read and do homework so I'm wondering if a larger lamp would be better--at the same time her room is TINY so don't want to overpower things.

Please don't mind the mess. Which do you think works better? Also, do you think the B&W striped shade works or is too busy with the bedspread and WTs? Try to imagine the wall w/o all the pictures tacked up. I could not find a black in the smaller size, but this one was on clearance. JCP also sells a crystal lamp, but it's with a white shade. It could also work, but I worry it'll get dirty since DD is not that neat (hence the dark bedding as well).

Lastly, I cannot figure out how to attach the shade to the lampbase. The shade does not look like the style to use a harp, but there doesn't seem a way to screw it on either. Am I missing something?

The lampshade should just sit on the base. No screws. Lightbulb goes in last.

Looks like the lamp is made for a harp (see the sides where the harp would attach), but it is missing. I would check with the store. If it wasn't removed, you will just need to buy one. Take the lamp with you to make sure you get the correct size. Since the lamp is not complete, you'll also want a finial. Your daughter can pick a fun one to coordinate with the room or just go with one that matches the lamp.

I think the room is going to look great!

Lots of good ideas here already, but I don't think this one was mentioned, so I'll toss it on the pile. Desks that slide over a bed. Congratulations on your adoption! Friends of ours adopted an out of country sibling group of four this year, two of them teens. It's been an amazing journey! The kids have been such a wonderful addition to their family. You can get a headboard the same color as the dresser, and match the night stands with it. And based on the photo below, you can use the grays tones instead of the green. dark gray sheets and lighter gray on the walls, with some decoration in wood style. And do the decorations on the blue that she wants, with pillow, a rug, curtains...

what a great space for him. so many ideas. first thing I'd do is some built-ins in some of those nooks. simple plywood, paint. For books, video games, collections, etc. that inset next to the J would be the perfect spot for a built in bookcase. Look at Ikea hacks, or DIY inset bookcase tutorials. Ikea Billy Bookcasehack: https://food52.com/blog/25110-best-ikea-billy-bookcase-hacks how about a mural (peel and stick) of some sort? you could do it on the wall or on that sloped ceiling above his bed. bring in some sstring lights and drape them from wall to wall do a lower bed like this, back in that corner, string the lights around it, and remove that nightstand, replace w/a cute table. or something like this platform style bed. put on a regular mattress or a futon mattress. do a diff light. remove that futon across from it and bring in a low-boy dresser of some type. bring in lots of thin, cotton dhurrie rugs you could do a roman clay treatment on the wall and paint a dark color. maybe bring in some faux beams from side to side drape the lights over those: for the lower areas that are wasted space, do something like these low open shelf cubbies (enlarge this pic to see them) decor ideas, lighting, bean bags, get some cheap pine tongue and groove flooring (lumber liquidators) and install it on one wall, or on one of the angled ceilings, or around the desk area, behind the sofa, etc what's under that carpet? some type of wood? you could paint it w/porch paint and thrown down a bunch of cool looking rugs. maybe redo the desk w/Ikea desk hacks. you could get a solid piece of butcher block (or a remnant), span it to fit across the entire area under the window, (use cleats to get it to 'float') and then some pull out ikea drawers. or something like this gray one. maybe hang a light directly over the desk, or get a desk light remove that heavy blue drape, and do an inset window blind. I did this black cellular blind on my sons bedroom window. If you get the blackout option, you won't need the heavy drape to block out the light. something liek this. it's less bulky looking, the desk looks better, (frame out the window w/white trim if you're using a dark shade), and the pendant light gives overhead light in that dark space.

Yeah, my bad....wrong lampshade -- it needs to have the arms to fit in the slots. Sorry!

Some lamps are made to work either with or without a harp. I've not seen one quite like yours with the threading at the top. Makes me wonder if the part that would allow the shade style you purchased to fit it missing. I tried to find the lamp you bought on Targets website to no avail. I'd take it with me when you return the shade and see if I'm correct.

The lamp and shade were both purchased at Target. It's sold as a mix-n-match. I noticed all the shades were of this style which to me would look to work without a harp since the round part is made to go over the part where the bulb is. While the lamp can accomodate a harp as I tried one that I had on another lamp, I can't figure out how to attach this shade. I tried on my other lamp after I remove the harp, but there doesn't seem a way to tighten it. Perhaps there is a screw piece that is supposed to be used, though none of the lamps I looked at seems to have it.

I'm going to look around at a few other stores (Home Decorators, Lowes, JC Penneys, etc.) to see what else I can find without breaking the bank.

Still wondering about the size though. The shade on the larger lamp just seems so awfully large for her tiny room, but perhaps I'm just not used to it?

Val I looked at a couple of mine that are made for the type of shade you have and I'm positive now that you lamp has a part missing. As I stated above I'd take the lamp with you to Target and ask to see another lamp like yours to make sure, but I think my photos will convince you that's just what's happened....

justgottabeme: Very interesting. Thanks for posting those photos. It does look like something is missing. Funny that I actually purchased two lamps like that. I will check there later today. With your lamp does that shade go on top or below the cap? Other DD has a piece that screws on top and the shade is attached below, but it's still different than what I'm looking at with these lamps. All my other lamps and shades use harps.

The ring of the shade sits right on top of the ridge of the top part like this...

The shades that I have on this lamp sits on the bulb. I happened to have tried one that sits on the ring like the one you have, but the shade didn't work with this lamp. The room it's in has been being used at temporary storage and is now going to back to being my ER/everything room.

justgottabeme: You were right! I went to a different Target store today as I knew the store I got these lamps from didn't have any more of the taller one. Right away I noticed the lamps at the other store had the top part like your lamp and the shades fit snuggly on top of that. I still have both sizes of the lamps and shades as I've yet to decide which one to keep. It's been my observation that most of the kid/teen lamps don't seem adequate to read in bed so I'll have DD try them both out at night to see which lamp (and wattage) is better for reading--since she tends to stay up late studying during the school year.

DD leaves this weekend for a 5-day soccer camp and I'll paint her room while she is away--by which time her bedding and WTs shouldv'e arrived and then we can get a better feel which of the two works best. Only con is I cannot find a black shade yet in the smaller size--so at this point I'd need to use the striped one.

I was pretty sure the first time I saw the photo of the socket that something was missing. I'm a lamp addict so I've seen/bought/made many styles of lamps over the years.
