I recall someone asking if mine was a sears home.

Curious about it!

Some of you asked what they were.

I was the one asking if you knew. There were also the Aladans too. Similar time period and building concepts. I have a photo of a Sears home we lived in when 2 yrs old, but no memory of the interior details. It looked a lot like yours, but many of my parents friends had the huge ones with brick and fancy details which still hang on in my memory.

What is fascinating (to me) is being able to order various options...an outhouse or plumbing, sizes of garages, etc. I have the book the photos of your link came from. And a 1919 yearly catalog which is almost 2" thick. We could fill the house with needed living items and furniture from it. Not as old as the catalog, but definitely remember the delight when one showed up. I do remember going to a counter in Sears and ordering things when my kids were quite young.

Darn, spelled Aladdin wrong. Here is another link with before and afters from Sears lovers. So many have been restored and cared for. I love the hardware shown and doors. Doors seem to have the same options as we do now.

A good look at before and afters. The original photos
show shutters on some of the windows. Totally wrong install as so many talk about here and on the decorator's forum. Just putting up a shutter must have been the thing back then too.

Just out of curiosity, is this tub new? I love the old style of it. You did a nice job picking appropriate fixtures in keeping with the age. Also, is that wide windowsill wood? I can see a beautiful piece of marble there, or marble-like laminate. Think old buildings with marble windowsills. As for a place for shampoos etc, could you just put them on the bathtub side ledge? If you do the u-shaped shower curtain rod, you should run the subway tile all the way to the ceiling. You'd be surprised at how high water can splash. Don't ask me how I know-from-my-very-tall-son!

I recently found a very desirable piece of land with a 1920 Sears Kit Home. I appreciate the detail and quality of the home but it is only 1400 s/f and sits very close to the road. It also has an addition on the front and side which covers where the front L shape porch used to be. I really want the land and plan to build our 4000 s/f dream home further back from the road. Does anyone know if there is a market for selling this home and then having the buyer relocate it (obviously within a short distance of where I live in central Ohio). Or possibly taking the home apart and selling the individual original pieces? Some of the home is original and some has been renovated in the 70's by the couple who still lives there and is selling. I should also mention that the land has some very specific deed restrictions which prevent breaking up the land and the city will not allow sewer and septic for both homes on the lot. One thing you can do with old photos is to scan them at the highest resolution that you can. Then begin blowing up the scan, and looking into the detail of the photo. You will be very surprised what you begin to see. I did this with some of the old old family photos taken back in the early 1900s. Blowing them up and peeking at things like the scuff marks on the shoes of the children, the detailing on the home made dresses, a barb wire fence between the yard and a corn field, which had corn ears fully grown on it, so it had to be late in the year. And most of all, I could see the expression in the eyes of my grandmother. But you might see the detailing of the boards on the porch, the way the steps were built and from what, and were they painted or not. Any flower beds and what was in them. Many of the homes in my old pictures were not painted, but were of rough lumber sometimes board and batten. But the young couple were invariably standing proudly in front of their home, probably newly built or expanded. Hard working people in homemade dresses and overalls and brogan shoes. It was as close to Southern American Gothic as you can get. Another one I loved was of my great grandmother Sophia taken in the hog pen with this huge hog which she was feeding. Going on the assumption that they had pictures taken of important things or events, I decided this was important because she was proud to be able to feed such a fine hog which would be slaughtered and feel her family well during the winter. Plus, she loved animals and took good care of them. I guess I inherited that love from her.

I think I have found that the house still exists. I found that in the Capleville area there was a road called "Malone." Knowing that old roads were often named for significant residents on that road, I used Google Maps satellite view to find a house on the west side of Malone, somewhat south of E.Shelby Dr. This house has a basic square shape, with front and back porches shaped like the front porch in your catalog view. In one satellite view, it appeared to me that the original front stairs are still there. One of the dormers (I think that is what it's called) is still on the roof. The house looks as though it has been otherwise altered. The home sits back from the road a bit, so if you need to find it again in the future, best to copy my link below. I have family in that part of the country, including Malones. I do not know of any who were doctors, all of them having been very rural people with little education until after WWII. I'm probably unrelated. If you not only change the altitude view on Google, but the directional view, I will be surprised if you do not agree with me that this is the house. One more thing about the area. One of the nearby major streets is called "Getwell". The lore (not sure if it is true history) is that the street was once called "Shotwell" and there was a military hospital during the civil war. I looked for any around me and didn't get a hit, but I wouldn't be surprised. That style house looks familiar.

Here is a blog or website (couldn't tell at first glance) with pictures of Sears homes today. There may be a popup. I got a popup message asking if I wanted to open a file and it wouldn't go away even I after clicked cancel. But then I get the same message on these forums, but I can click cancel for those.
