Donna Dewberry's Brushes

Hey Everyone,

I'm new here and am a young painter who loves decorative painting, etc.

I was just wondering what the difference was between Donna Dewberry's One Stroke brushes and regular brushes - flats/shaders for example.

I've been trying to paint one stroke with other flats and it doesn't seem to be working out...

How are they specially designed for the one stroke technique - it seems like any flat brush would be ok...

Hi Michael and welcome!

I've done OneStroke with both Dewberry and other flat brushes but then I've been painting for a long time.

If you are new to OneStroke I recommend you start by using Dewberry's brushes. Even though you can use any other good, flat, TAKLON brush to do OneStroke, the Dewberry brushes are made a lot thicker than most flats to hold more paint which is necessary to do OneStroke. OneStroke uses a LOT of paint.

And just a note....I always found that using an ANGLE brush made doing OneStroke much easier and Dewberry now has those in her brush line.

Hi Michael, Welcome to the forum, glad you found us. I like the DD brushes for painting One Stroke. Like Kraftymom said, they hold more paint. I learned to paint One Stroke roses with the flat brushes, but then started using the DD angle brushes for them and the angle brush makes it so much easier! I bought my brushes at Michael's with the discount coupon. Hope you will come post pics of your projects here for us to see. Have fun painting. Luvs

I received two of her kits for Christmas. I wasn't pleased with either one. With both kits not all the items you need are really included. The basic strokes kits has no patterns included you are suppose to trace Donna's painting from the book. Even if you use a stylist you end up making marks/creases on the pages which shows through to the other side of the page as well. There are typo's or mistakes in the paint colors, in one flower the written words tell you to use white, and the color work sheet it is very clear you should be using a yellow. But of course there is no way to tell what yellow. Then after tracing a painting and putting it onto a shelf I realized the drawing I traced has one type of flower and the picture of the completed project has the small 5 petal flowers. So naturally it doesn't look the same. But again the book states the photo is a copy of the finished project and it isn't. Her Favorites kits is a little better for no other reason it comes with paper patterns. Both kits come with a list of substitutions that you must make with the paint you are given and the paints listed in the book. I did better buying her video from Wal-mart for 4.99 and using the paint and what few brushes you get from the kit. It is much easier to understand the video.

I wouldn't say any paint. A thinned paint with very litle pigment would make it hard to do One Stroke effectively. Your colors would not be vibrant and you would have a muddy picture. One Stroke is done wet-on-wet and therefore the thick pigmented paints are important so your colors don't bleed together and become muddy. That's why you don't use water. The Folk Art paints used for her technique are very similar to artists tube acrylics and I would suggest using them if you don't want to become frustrated. And you'll need the floating medium if painting on porous surfaces such as paper, raw wood, etc.

Hi Sandi, So glad you got the email, sure is strange you can't email me, oh well. I watched a bit of the show last night at midnight but had to call it quits for the day. The new High Definition Acrylic Paints look pretty neat. She was painting as if they were oil paints. Had a really good price on the first items, normally priced over $90 on sale for $49.--. Vique, Maybe the teacher teaching hasn't gone through the OSCI course with Donna or Maribel. You can go to the onestroke web site and see if you find her name listed as a teacher, or better yet you can find someone else who you can call and ask for classes and to see their work before you sign up. I took Donna's Cert course last June, and I can tell you first hand I was doing Roses all wrong, until I got to certs, and Maribel put me on the right track. Before I teach roses I paint them at home on anything that does't move for about 3 weeks, so I am sure to have them down pat. Of course with all painting no ones roses are going to look as good as Donna's, but Donna's! : ) Cindy, As far as the videos, that is the way I learned before I when to certs. I couldn't find anyone in my local area giving classes. It really does help to be able to see it over and over but in Slow motion too. If you feel ike you are loading the brush correctly and that isn't the problem, try doing your stokes on wax paper or freezer paper over and over and over again. The more you do the better you will get. I would stop the tape, and do just one part of a stroke until I could get it down pat, start the tape again and move on. Welcome Michael, glad to have you with us. This is a fun and informative group.

I do not do one stroke but still use some of DD's brushes because they are so full, they blend paints very well and as said above, they hold a lot of paint.

Be sure to sign on to Michaels website - lots of coupons and I found that The Artists Club is also a great place to find specials. I posted their sites below.

I am one of Donna's OSCI's and her brushes are made for the begining student so you will be able to do her designs. A good way to get them is somewhere like Michaels or Hobby lobby with a 40% coupon. Buy the set of flats it is the best to start with. After you teach yourself to paint you will be able to do the same thing with many other brushes. Just comes from pratice over and over again. A good cheap way to do that is paint on wax paper you can get a roll at the dollar store.

Does anyone else have trouble with Donna's brushes lasting very long. They are wonderful when they are new but they seem to lose their chisel edge very fast no matter how careful I am cleaning them. Has any one found any products that would help restore them? Thanks, Mary

The Donna Dewberry brushes are best because of the chisel edge and the fact that they are thinner in the middle and have longer bristles so they can hold more paint. It's possible to find similar brushes but I've found that most flat brushes are too thick in the middle and don't have a chisel edge, which is essential for One Stroke painting. There are some that will work. You just have to choose very carefully to make sure they have the same characteristics of the Donna Dewberry brushes.
