Refinishing old furniture with fake wood trim?
Comments (15)Here's an article you might find interesting. It tells you about how waterfall came into popularity, how it was made, what not to use to clean it. Some interesting stories about it. (Such as why so many pieces made and that we still see today are bedroom suites. Depression era couples often started out living with parents, so had nothing much to call their own except their bedroom furniture - if they could afford that.) Click on What is Waterfall, Anyway? I'd be very leery of Krud Kutter on wood, but especially delicate, aged veneers. That's a degreaser meant for everything from aluminum siding to garage floors. There are lots of recipes out there for cleaning antique wood. I have a routine I like. Start with Formby's Deep Cleansing Build-Up Remover. Just be careful with any loose veneer, some of it could be about paper thin and not take a lot of pressure. I like Restore-A-Finish for pieces that need spruced up but not a full strip and restore. It's worked wonders on solid wood. If using on veneers, avoid the steel wool it says you can use. Too harsh on veneer imho. When you've got it nice and clean, consider a good paste wax like Trewax or I like the liquid Howard's Beeswax Feed N Wax (Sears Hardware, Ace). If someone in a store suggests Bowling Alley wax, I'd suggest avoiding it. It was recommended to me by a retailer who said a couple of his 'old-timer' antique dealing customers use it. That stuff was about impossible to buff out and was kind of gummy feeling to me. My SIL gave me a beautiful deco era waterfall accent table, from DHs grandparents. She just didn't want it anymore. I just did a light RAF wipe rather than a lot of elbow grease with super fine steel wool. Didn't want to risk harming the veneers. Anyway, I did my Formby's, RAF, Howard's Beeswax routine and sent her a photo with a thank you. She was amazed at the difference and wanted to know what I refinished it with. ;) This is a different piece, before and after. An ebay purchase, a vintage solid cherry hutch in pristine condition structurally but had smoke film on it and other kinds of grime, the finish was dull and needed a really good cleaning. seller's photo after I did my Formby's>RAF>Feed n Wax routine....See MoreFinished Kitchen - 50's ranch refresh
Comments (35)You guys are so sweet! Onedogedie, I love that visual. It will be interesting to see whether I grow to love the little path or whether I come to despise it. Knowing me, I will grow to ignore it. If it ain't broke... The old kitchen was fine functionally, but up-close it was showing its age in a way that the most upbeat person couldn't classify as patina. The painted edges of the counters were chipped and yellowing (all the paint was yellowing), the counters were burned and stained, and the floors had some enormous weird stains that turned out to be adhesive that had wicked up from below. But the real reason for the renovation was that I hated that island and the drop-in sink. Hated. Really very virulent with the hating. The tile was a compromise. DH wanted the green tile and I wanted the blue, he wanted the 4x4 and I wanted the 2x8. He felt strongly about format and I felt strongly about color. He was right - I think this format is really great, it has a strong reference to the 50's and the color matches our pool outside those windows (which is covered right now.) I posted the tile on a separate thread, but here's a closeup. The engobe is really subtle. I thought I'd see more color variation, but am happy enough with the final result! Ignore the old coffee grinder, it was replaced with a fancy one at Christmas! Louisiana, can't wait to see what you do with your space, I love these old ranchers. So fun to see them come back to life. The roaster is up there because WHERE ELSE WOULD IT FIT? ;-) It's a great pot, though...people ooh and aah over it. Best pot ever for super bowl chili. Munchlady, our fridge is a 3-year-old glass-front JennAire. I'm pretty sure they still make it. We love it, although the icemaker is on the fritz right now and the rubber gaskets in front have required some duct tape. Hard to know in our house how much of that kind of thing is rough use by shorties and how much is manufacturer planned obsolescence. I can't tell how often I walk in there to find a 60-pound kid hanging from a fridge door or practically doing pushups on the freezer drawer. (And yes, I tell them not to several times a day. That and everything else I repeat several times a day. This is why I am A Drinker.) Can't take credit for the rolling peninsula, it was here when we bought the house. It's super practical, takes up a lot less space than a table and chairs and allows us to have traffic flow around the island while we're cooking. Which we need, since it is a classic Barrier Island. Thank you all so much again for the lovely compliments. We are really happy with the results and I am happy to take a break from reno for a little while!!...See MoreFinishing office refresh - what to do between windows?

Comments (85)Hi island. Our banquette was built (several years ago) by the same guy who did our cabinets. There is no back on it ... just loose pillows, which we sort of toss around depending on how many people are actually sitting on it. It does have storage. There are sliding doors on the long front of it (this is not easy storage to access but it's for the cookbooks I pull out once a year, etc.) and a "morgue" drawer that comes out from the end (where we keep all the dog leashes, collars, etc. Super handy storage!). I will take some measurements tonight or tomorrow for you, but I recall that the seat is about 19" tall after the cushion is on. I made the cushion extra thick, 4 inches, and raised it up a little because I prefer to sit a little higher at a table. The chairs came with the house and I sort of painted them on a whim. I used Annie Sloan's chalk paint, which was OK, although I'm not sure it was any better than any other kind of paint, other than not having to prime them first. They do seem to be wearing well though. Hope that helps for now. More to follow....See MoreHolly- Kay
