How many square feet in an 80 lb bag of cement?
Comments (13)If you don't mind sweating a little, you can usually buy a nice playground mix of sand, and a sac of portland, and mix your own in a 5 gallon bucket using an electric drill and mortar bit. Measure how much sand it takes to fill your molds. Use a 1part cement to 2 parts or even 3 parts sand and add water (Will vary greatly on each batch) I make my own pavers and only do 6 at a time, but only mix enough cement for 3 at a time. They are about 15"x15"x21/2" and each one weights approx. 20lbs. I have a few that are 4" thick by 30" and they weigh 120lbs. Not fun to move at all. At 21/2 " and a high portland ratio, a car can drive on them once they are cured. I like making my own mix because I have control of the consistancy, I started out using a pre-mix, and it varies with brands, what size aggregate. Most importantly, you need to use the entire bag each time, as the portland may settle in the bag unevenly. I purchased the sand from a local retail by the yard at about $10 a yard. Portland is cheap also, so my pavers are costing about $1.00 including the cost of the molds($500.00) another thing to remember is that you can always add more water, but not more cement to your mix. MIght also want to think about a release agent for your forms, if you plan on reusing them again....See MoreHow many square feet for 1 pepper plant?
Comments (7)lucille, I will keep the row spacing at three feet but I will add another foot between plants. I am not short on room so I am only spacing them out to make it easier to get to them and easier to photograph. They can get by on smaller spacing if you do not have alot of room. How many plants are you going to have? Dale...See MoreDo you like my small house? 835 sq feet
Comments (19)Hi angiep, what a cute house. I live in 750 sq ft! Personally, if I could dbl that space, I'd be a lot happier! My house was built in 1949 & unfortunately, is not craftman style. Just plain ole '40's - '50's cottage style. 2 bedrm's, 1 small bath, 1 living area, 2 very small closets & 1 small one in the hallway w/ shelving next to the bath, like a linen closet. The kitchen is not a bad size - pretty much sq or a little rectangle! I'm just starting to redo that. I was going to turn my current kitch into a dining rm & add on a kitchen, but I was out of work for a yr & 1/2 & now I'm just able to redo the kitchen only now. Kind of a bummer, but it is what it is. I'll post pictures on here when it's all said & done. Probably will be after the 1st of the next yr when it's all thru! I wish I could say my bills are great, but not so much! I have very little insulation & live in Austin, TX where it's in the 100's this time of yr. They just raised our rates & my last bill was $215!! That also includes water & garbage, but trust me, the majority of that is electricity! Then add a $5000 property tax bill & my small house isn't that cheap to live in! I would definitely not be able to afford a larger house at this point! But, as I said, I've made it really cute over the years & have just learned to make it work. It's not the easiest thing to live in such a small place, but I've been here for 13 yrs, so have learned to purge a few times a yr! Or, if you're smart, just don't buy new stuff! I have a hard time w/ that, tho! I just wanted to congratulate you on your new digs. You'll figure out how to live in it & be very happy! Good luck!...See MoreDid you buy your small home...
Comments (75)This is the SMALLEST home I have ever lived in. Growing up in New England in a 5000 sq ft Victorian was fun. When I married we owned a 2500 sq ft Cape Cod style home 4/3. When the divorce came, and I did not want to live there anymore, I sold my equity to my d ex h and his new wife, and had enough to buy my current home. It's 1100 sq ft, 3/1 (one bathroom homes should be against the law, imho) but it was on a 1 acre lot, the kids could walk home from school, I could afford it if child support stopped, and it did from time to time, so we never became homeless. It was built in 1959 and in 1995 Hurricane Opel sent a tornado to re-do the place. So I have a 59 slab and 95 house. Same floor plan, just modernized. I want to build a new home, but I cannot find a builder to build a 1200 sq ft home. They say 2500 is minimum build. Even when I am paying CASH. So, here I stay, in a large home by myself and my dogs. My kids are grown and one has finished med school and one is in med school. They are the real benifactors of having a small house payment (under $300) I could spend my modest income on my kids and not the house. My neighbor was an original owner, and he and I discussed house payments one day. He said he never new each month how he would come up with the $65 mortgage payment on his salary with 5 kids in a 3/1 1100 sq ft home! I live in the deep south, Alabama, and my electric bill for a/c is $65/mnth, and I keep it cold in here. I am a Yankee! God bless small homes.
