Flooring, shelves and more with pics

here's 2 samples of so some type of vinyl I had here. I think it's a tile from HD. Do you like the greyer one or the one that is more yellowish?

I think I liked either better when I thought they had the sticky flaps on them - like allure.

here's the laminate in the kitchen now (lower) - looks a bit redder in real. The one that's sideways (top) is a plank of the cheap laminate I bought at a flooring store.

This is the connecting floor area from the kitchen and hall into the LR/DR area. The wall sides left and right don't line up evenly. I'll have to change the flooring using a strange angle or use the same flooring for all of it.

this is the closet and shelves that I had a fight with a few days back. The very top shelf is the normal above the rod shelf. The 1st full shelf below it is the one that fell that day. The split shelves are where I was trying to put another full shelf. Since it didn't want to fit in there easily I stood it in a corner and used the ends cut off of 2 other shelves. They don't match but it doesn't matter - it's only a storage closet. I don't have the cabinet that will go on the left front of the closet here yet for the sheets/towels etc so they're just on one of those shelves. So is most everything else temporarily.

Isn't that exciting? lol!

I also bought a pendent light last wk at lowe's for 21.00. It was half price so I grabbed it up. The length seemed just right (haven't even checked on that yet) -the price sure was right!

I also bought one of those battery operated LED lights that mama g posted about. I think it will worked out just fine for in my pantry. Down the road I might find I need a 2nd one. It'd also work nicely under the cabinets when I decide which ones I want to have lights under.

Closet shelves are exciting! You've inspired me to finish the shelves in the closets in the addition.

I like the yellower tile, but I always prefer warmer tones over grays. Happy to help with the LEDs, and also so happy to see so much progress--that's exciting, too.

Think in choosing the right floor tile it would be best to take into consideration the wall color and the colors of your cabinets. Do you have warm tones or cool tones? Keep us posted!

Tina --- How long will it take you to get to Iowa??? That is awesome!!! I know your pain -- we have a 1600 sq ft old house that had one closet in it and that was under the stairs. Called lots of different things depending on the manufacturer CushionStep (Armstrong), Airstep (Congoleum), FibreFloor (Tarkett) are all part of what they call "Resilient" flooring. I stole ths definition off of a website: "Resilient flooring refers to flooring materials which have a relatively firm surface, yet characteristically have "give" and "bounce back" to their original surface profile from the weight of objects that compress its surface. Tarkett's are Floorscore certified (similar to GreenGuard but for flooring - Armstong's are as well I think). It's sheet flooring but some have the option of being loose laid without glue which is where it gets tricky (not really but some flooring places sell a full line from a manufacturer without knowing a lot about some of the products). Once we figured out how it is supposed to be laid it went really smoothly - the installer was very good. Essentially it is like a thick vinyl sheet flooring, because of the layers it is pliant and can be given much richer and complicated finishes than sheet vinyl. I'm all for using any space one can find to use for storage, but that wouldn't stop me from using this area for displaying family photos too. Actually you can have both! Since this is right outside a bathroom I vote to add shelves to store toiletries, extra TP and even paper towels since the kitchen is close by. Great place for a first aid kit too. So many small items from the kitchen or bath could be stored on shelves I just can't see closing it off with wallboard. In order to display family photos, I'd have the handyman remove the knob, pretty as it is, and replace it with a magnetic latch that will pop open with a push of the finger. I'd buy desktop frames in a size that would fit nicely with the door leaving a bit of the door showing all the way around. Attach them with the open end up so you could slide the photos in from the top with out having to remove the frame from the door.

Check out this thread: Rev-A-Shelf Spice Racks for Fillers -- Have you seen these!!!! I don't know what your KD-turned-carpenter is planning on doing or how good he is, but if you search other threads people are happy w/IKEA hardware and design. I would ask to see some of his other work b/f allowing him to do this...especially since the fact that he's your carpenter came as a surprise to you. I personally think drawers are better than pullout shelves (as do many others on the Forum) but if you cannot have drawers, than pullout cabinets, IMHO, are still better than pullout shelves. Checkout the thread above for ideas. If you research your options both on the Forum & at the Rev-A-Shelf and HÃ¤fele sites, you'll find hardware for all sizes of cabinets and a lot of ideas. yes I am interested in knowing what colors you will decide on also. I pick wall colors last though to tie in everything else. I like the yellow and if you don't have enough to do the whole floor I think if you had some matching black in the same type you could mix it in especially around the borders.

the walls everywhere are Navajo white - an off white. they'll stay that. I've thought about painting a wall or 2 in my bdrm/bath green/purplish (see IDIE's bdrm posted on this forum somewhere) BUT that'll be another yr if I have any strength left.

the kitchen will stay that color - there aren't much in walls in the kitchen but are 2 sections of hall walls that the kitchen is open to.

the flooring shown above is not for the kitchen tho. it'd be for the hall and /or other rooms. The kit floor will stay the laminate (lower part of pic above) for now at least - who knows in a few yrs? it's a good Armstrong laminate. I can live w/it.

this is a kitchen cab. they're really a bit darker than what it shows here. If I survive everything else (moving in?) maybe next yr I'll deal with them - as in paint them. I can't decide (so no hurry there!) - but a dark turquoise/teal (wiped down in black/dk brwn) is high up there for the lower ones.

the kitchen handles will be gone, gone, gone sooner! they'll be like this one. I have one put on and am testing it out. It is nickel tho - not sure i want that. I might try spray painting it one of these days to see how it looks dark - as pictured. I can only find them in the nickel locally or I'd buy more asap. I'd love to have those others gone.

this is like the light I got for 21.00 at lowe's a wk or so ago for the hall outside the pantry and 'door' into tv room.

the door to the pantry is the open space on the left. the 'door' to the tv room WILL BE on the far right wall (with a thermostat peeking out - that'll be moved). the hall is 35" wide and the glass for the fixture is 7.5" wide. I think that'll work ok.
The door straight ahead (open) in the pic is to the laundry/mud room. and the last door thru there - the back door.

I forgot to post early about flooring for me. It can't have much of a pattern. Even a lot of squirly things on it that overall would develop a pattern. It throws my feet off. yeah, I blame my feet - like it has nothing to do with my sight - lol! I can misstep too easily.

I think putting those pieces next to a wall would be a good idea. not something I thought about...but will do.

'early' - I meant earlier. I 'spect that 'squirly' isn't correct either. A good name for a pup that doesn't sit still much tho - if I could spell it correctly!

I'd use the same flooring throughout, probably the laminate. What a great closet! I would kill (well almost) for a walk in closet.

I'm partial to the laminate also. it's just that it'll be me putting it down... I have no way to cut it lengthwise. I figured the other would be easier for me to cut. then again, I'm not even sure i can find the 'other' again. it's gotta be HD or lowe's.

I do love that closet. I have another one across a short hall from it. The hall goes from my bdrm to the bathroom w/a closet on either side of it. In the other one I'll have a cabinet on the left side for my tshirts/shorts/sweats and will hang clothes on the back rod and probably the right rod. If I have that much to hang. I think the closets are 4' deep and 5.5' wide.Each of the other 2 bdrms has a 6' long closet 2' or so deep. one is deeper than the other. I put shelves mostly in 1 w/ about 1.5' of space I could hang stuff. there's a home in there for the upright vacuum too.
