I like the boarder, but when I take the whole look into consideration I'm not fond of it with the striped wall in the background...

I think the boarder would look cool as a wallpaper put on a wall, such as the one with the broad stripes. Good luck!

Before I opened the thread, my first inclination was to say "no" :), but it fits well on the soffit and the colors are good. I agree, live with it for a while.

If you don't like it, take it down now.

Otherwise, you'll get used to it. If you don't say, "Oooh, yes!" now, you won't like it any better later.

No. When borders were all the craze, I did have one in my oldest's room. But I am not sure now why they were popular. Why do we want to look up at the ceiling?

Your cabinet door pulls are oddly placed. Usually the handle is on the side opposite the hinge. Yours all all in the middle.

It can work if you make an earnest commitment to hipness. The raw materials are there.

I hate borders, as a rule, but I don't mind yours. Maybe because it's on that center island instead the usual boxing in effect of the main room walls. I'm intrigued by the pattern like a modern take on the 70s day-glo daisies. I definitely get a retro feel from it, is that desirable to you? I also vote for living with it a while before deciding. I think it's fun. A decision maker for myself is always my clutter level. I cant have patterns in my decor because no matter how I try my space is always busied by abundant clutter. Patterns that were cute when the house was clean and tidy can make the house look like sanford and Son within about 48 hours. Don't know if that is a consideration for you.

And FWIW the cabints I inherited with my house also have the door handles in the center.Must have been the trend of some era. I wouldn't choose it, but I can live with it.

Like some of the others, I was ready to say no, because I don't like borders. But I actually think it is kinda cute. However, when I look to the left in your photo, I see another run of border that ends strangely mid-wall, and I can see why you did it -- you're following the cabinet run -- but that looks awkward. Do you have other pics showing the rest of the kitchen?

PS meant to also say that, while I think the border is cute, that one section of wall with the striped wallpaper seems kind of random.

It's too busy with both the circles and stripes. I think it would look best with nothing there, but if you want a border, I'd go with a complementary stripe.

Are we voting? If we are, my vote is no, the border doesn't work.

I would say no....if you're not ready to get rid of the soffit altogether yet, then put up crown molding and paint the molding and the soffit to match the cabinets so it looks more intentional.

And is there any way you can move those door handles?

I'm thinking I might live with it for a couple of weeks and see if I like it anymore. It feels a bit claustrophobic to me and I have a huge kitchen. I'd love to move the door handles, but I want to replace them. They're so outdated. I have so many cupboards and doors that I need about 60 total and I can't afford it right now. Something to save up for.

How would she get rid of the soffit without getting rid of the cabinets? Sure she can move the door handles, but it would leave 2 holes in the center of the cabinets. Not really practical advice.....

Sorry, I vote no. I don't like any borders, I think they make your home look dated. Anyone's, just not yours. But if you like it and are happy w/ it, leave it up and enjoy it!

Keep the border get rid of the yipes stripes! paint that wall a nice chocolate brown..

If you have leftover border,(or you may be able to use the existing border if it comes down in large pieces) cut out the flowers and float them over the cabinets where the border is now.

I would keep the border and do away with the stripes. If the wall was plain with some art work, it would look better.

My mom has cabinets that look just like those, but with a dark stain. I like the way yours look painted.

While I don't think it looks bad, it does look dated to me even though it's a current popular pattern. Sorry, but I say no to almost all wallpaper borders except very high end ones, which can sometimes get away with it as they're usually expensive and fabulous (but I don't always like them either)

I like it but agree the stripes don't work. If you find you don't like it I would go with the suggestion to put up crown molding.

I don't mind the handles in the middle becuase it's different.

I kind of like both the stripes & the border...looks original & fun...also like the door handles in the middle of the doors. Call me crazy! Do you have an accent color in the kitchen? I am picturing a bright yellow similar to what is in that dish on the counter...just a touch, though. Maybe a fun clock on the wallpaper wall that would go with your beautiful hutch. I like your look.

The problem I see with putting up crown molding is there's no good place to stop it. She'd have to do the entire kitchen.

For those who said that you can't move cabinet pulls because of the holes--

When they're painted like these, the holes can be filled with wood putty, sanded smooth and painted and will not show if done carefully. Moving them is definitely an option, but would require work, and of course, the desire to do all that paint touch-up.

Re the border: I'm not a fan but if you like it, then keep it up. It reminds me of the 70's.

A poster suggested that the op "move the pulls." It's not that simple. I know all about wood putty and that she could fill the holes, sand and paint. That's exactly why I said it wasn't practical advice. I didn't get the impression that the op was looking for a project.

I opened this to say 'no' too, but I kinda like it! :-) It doesn't look the the typical wallpaper border that is placed an inch or two below the ceiling and it adds a nice punch of pattern. However, I also agree that it competes with the stripes.

Not diggin' it. Reminds me of a new take on my Grandparent's wallpaper from the 60's or some time around then. I don't think it does anything to flatter the room or the cabinets whatsoever.

I'm on the fence about the border. After looking at it for a while, I think what is throwing me is the furniture. The oak windsor-style stools and the country sideboard are out of sync with the retro 70's vibe of the stripes and that border. The border actually works with the cabinets.

So, if it were possible to change out the furnishings, then I'd say yeah. Paint the chairs black? Would work great.
