anyone who has install knowledge please let me know what you think. i was antiundermount for 3 reasons, sink failure, 33" base cab is too small for a good size sink and would have to be cut into to make the sink fit and concern about chipping the sink edge. trebruchet has advised that chips are fixable so i guess i am ok with that hot button. however when i discussed undermount failure with the installers, they assured me that they use silicone and a mechanical support to ensure the sink won't fall. i looked under the sink today with a flashlight(after the plumber hooked upmthe faucet) and the flange to the right of the sink is resting on the sides of the sink base and possibly the adjacent cab but on the other side i only see 2 shims on either end of the sink. is that sufficient to support that side? it is possible there is some other support i can't see but i am doubtful as the sink is too large for the base and the bowls are very close to each side of the cabinet. thanks all! ps the sales rep said the owner would call me yesterday and no call yet. not feeling like customer service is a priority.

Well, to put another opinion in to the mix---I don't know of any granite fabricators in my neck of the woods who will do a cutout on an already existing installed countertop that another fabricator has installed. Yes, you can get them to come out and drill holes, or modify cutouts in place, but there will be NO WARRANTY about the top cracking and you would have to sign a waiver acknowledging that fact. In an existing situation, the house can have settled, the cabinets settled, and there can be invisible stresses on the granite top if that's happened, and then you apply cutting tools to the situation and you have a stress crack manifest itself. Not to mention, your "pinch hitters" didn't help select the slab or layout, and the original fabricator may have installed a piece with a fissure there that just naturally broke when the larger cutout stresses were applied with the bigger and heavier cooktop. There are a lot of reasons granite cracks, but in an existing situation that is being modified, you really can't hold the fabricators responsible. Now, they should have made you aware of this on the front end, had you sign a waiver, and shown you the issue and let you sign off on the repair efforts before they left. I'm not defending that behavior at all.

Epoxy fill will take care of it and you will have to actively hunt for that spot in a few weeks." agree. very few granite installers are actually truly 'perfect" due to the nature of stone. Chips like that are often filled before the stone leaves the fab shop with no one the wiser. On occasion you'll get a chip like that at install and it needs follow-up.

Our granite has lots of mica that looks different and not polished. I have had to get used to owning granite. It's been a little bit of a disappointment. Maybe I'll feel better the longer time goes along. I was used to having Corian which is more or less bullet proof except for minor scratches that could easily be repolished. I do love how it looks, the richness of it really classed up my kitchen as opposed to the Corian color we had but still....
