Mosaic Magazine!

I just found out about this new magazine. It's due to be released in Feb. I couldn't find out how to order, so I sent an email to the publisher. I'll let you know what I find out.

I'm looking forward to seeing a magazine for mosaic art.

I've subscribed to Glass Crafters, but a lot of the time, I don't look at half of it. I hope this takes off!

Looks interesting - I see an orb (bowling ball, whatever) in the gallery page!

I got this in my email today and thought of most of the folks here:

"All mosaic artists are invited to submit photos for consideration for use in Brit Hammer-Dijcks' forthcoming book titled Mosaic: finding your own voice.
This is a book for advanced mosaicists as well as beginners who are serious about pursuing mosaic. The book will serve to inspire readers to experiment so that they, too, may find their own style. It will be a book of substance, delving into the principles of design while also covering some of the technical aspects of creating mosaics."

I want to add my two cents worth about my disappointment with the way Org. Gardening has turned out. I have read it for decades and am now reluctantly giving up. Garden Design is useless. Love Fine Grardening - yeah, it's lots of pictures (I think the best photography of the lot), but really good articles and advice. I have volumes going back for years - that's the one I keep. And I share them a lot w. new gardeners and friends. It's easy to locate specific articles with useful info. Also like Horticulture a lot. And I have just become a "member" of New England Gardening Club - primarily for the magazine People, Plants and Places - which is really quite good, but also because with joining comes a discount card for many NE garden centers and nurseries. This advice is only useful for NE, obviously - but if you are in this region check it out at newenglandgardening.com. I also belong to the Americal Horticulural Society and their magazine is excellent - that's an expensive join, but I get free entrance to many botanical gardens and so it pays me to do this (besides which, it's a good org to support_) I know this is supposed to be about least favorite but, hey, it just leads one to think about what one DOES like. sorry if this is incorrect

1. Frankie, the plastic report cover idea is awesome, easy & cheap! I've got tons of binders and page protectors but they are so big and heavy to actually use. I'm going to switch to your method! 2. Hey, scanner lovers: my printer has a scanner that does one page at a time so doing 5 pages seems to take forever. Especially since so many articles are double sided. How do you deal with that? At work we have a scanner that you can put 20 or so pages on but I wonder if magazine pages will jam since they are slick and thin? I REALLY like the idea of scanning...can you elaborate on how to do it quickly and easily? 3. Quick tip about using AllRecipes- if you become a member, you can have your own "recipe box". If I find a magazine recipe or someone gives me a copy or emails me, I search AllRecipes for a similar recipe, then edit the ingredients to match the recipe I found or was given and keep it in my recipe box. I put most of my own favorite recipes in AllRecipes this way. It's easier to edit an existing recipe than enter all of the info from scratch.

Every month (or bi-monthly, whichever is the case) I pick up the new issues of Memory Makers, Paperkutz, and Creating Keepsakes. You'd think I'd just subscribe to one!! But I can't decide which one I like best. I remember seeing a "free issue" thing in one of the mags, but I can't remember what one it was. I take free issues of any mag I can get my hands on. :)

Another idea is to purchase a Kopykake projector and project an image of your favorite mosaic or other picture and paint or for the new artists, project and make a stencil. There are some wonderful dry paints on the market to stencil with and believe it or not anyone can do it and they are easy to work with and to blend with a big brush for definition. You could then cover with glass or you could make it so that your art could be framed behind glass on display behind your range for an easy change later. Once you get the large formate projector you can do whole walls in other parts of the house.

Hey BAMA, thanks for the link. Looks interesting...bummer that it's only an annual though. I'd like a fix a lot more often than that!

Cool, maybe if there is interest, it'll go monthly or bi-monthly.

I guess BAMA will be a regular on their pages ( she's so famous and all..)

I'm going to submit for the book, too.

It helps to not take rejection personally (I have stacks of letters and emails of rejection) and don't get your hopes up, but more importantly, don't let fear guide you. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Think of how great it will feel if you get a photo in!

I wish there was a regular magazine for mosaics or something like the somerset books....I have every book that comes out I think..but a magazine would be great.

I think all of us here should go for that book..what have we got to lose? NOTHING!!! You'll either make it in or not but I am going to enter it too.
You just dont know what piece will catch their eye, the want all levels...beginner to advanced!!

Bama thank you for the link I have so wanted a mosaic magizine to come out for such a long time.

Bill Buckingham (Mosaic Rocks) who is producing the magazine is a transplanted Wisconsinite. We've been corresponding for awhile now.

He's a lovely man and it looks like his magazine will be first rate.

You know he produces the CD Mosaic Yearbook annually. Anyone can be included (don't be intimidated) just by going here for details. It's free to enter your work and if you want a copy of the CD it's around $12 if I recall correctly. Great reference and includes all skill levels.

And don't forget his retail site Mosaic Rocks if you want to include rocks or gems in your mosaics. Not cheap, but things one can't find elsewhere.

And no - I don't get anything for this endorsement - just a satisfied customer!

OOPS, I just posted the link to this magazine on the other side. I didn't see this post - too much to keep up with. I'm excited to see this publication. I've looked for mosaic magazines and haven't been able to find one so this looks great. I've ordered mine.
