Progress...Office painted - my desk area set up

Well our Office/ Playroom is all painted and here are the 1st pic's of my desk area (it's the only area that's clutter free and organized at this time).

The wall color is BM Jonesboro Cream. I am very, very plesed w/ it! I've ordered taupe faux silk curtains from JC Penney. DH bought the large frame for me last wknd or the wknd before at IKEA for my winter scene tree print that I've had stored for a yr. behind my buffet in the DR.

DH's great grandfather made the desk. I use it for letter writing and all of my decorating stuff. Each little bin thing holds paint chips and swatches along w/ a deck of cards and note cards. Oh, and miniature books that my mom buys me.

During get together's it serves as a drink station. Living in a house that has small rms. I also found that drop leaf desks serve very well as a side table in the LR in addition to desk/ drink/ food station when needed!

DH brought the chair home for me maybe a yr. ago from work. It was a piece that they fixed and refinished but the owner never came back for it despite multiple attempts at notification over a period of 2yrs. I'm thinking that a nice grey/ brown velvet w/ small nailhead trim in silver or nickel would look really nice for the seat.

The apothecary lamp is over 10yrs old and was stored in our attic because something broke and the light part kept flopping down. DH fixed that for me a few months ago. The light is nice because I don't have to move a light off of the desk when I want to close it.

The silver container holds office supplies and the jar on top holds rocks and feathers that DS1 finds and gives to me.

The only thing that wasn't handed down or on clearance or at least 1/2 off are the lamp (Wal-Mart buy can you beieve it? from when I moved out of my parents house) and the IKEA frame.

My future plans are as follows:

Do-able in the very near future:

There is a HUGE blck & white print at IKEA (55 1/2" X 79") of the Eiffel Tower taken from the base up, that I want to hang behind the desk to layer it (the desk will sit in front of it). The pic is so big that it substantially shows on each side and if I position it right will go almost to the ceiling. It will take up most of the wall. I want to hang a picture ledge on the oppossing wall to put the pictures that are currently on the top of the desk and 2 floating shelves that I have from IKEA to hold other items.

Way down the line:

There is an Indoor/ Outdoor rug from Home Decorators that I'd like to get in a taupey tone on tone zebra print.

I will post pics of DH's desk and side of the office once I get that straightened up. Hopefully this week!

These pics are staged!!! I have removed all plastic toy bins and kitty litter box that goes beside my desk (YUCK!). My life/ house wouldn't ever look this neat if you randomnly knocked on my door and asked to see. Thanks for looking! :O)

That is so pretty, you did a good job! By the picture you'd never know a disclaimer was needed! Love the little touch you did with the flowers. Beautiful piece of furniture too.

Clara - Looks like you are certainly pumping out the lumens, and plants look happy. Two questions to ponder though: at $45 a pop, these 85W CFLs + fixture are well-beyond chump change, at least for me. At some point, it must make sense to switch over to a HID lighting system. A ceiling mounted 1000W HPS, for example, would probably irradiate a good portion of your grow space, and they can't be more than a couple of hundred bucks. Second, the size of those 85W CFLs in the HD brooder lamp seems to ensure a lot of wasted lumens, and they stick out so far, a strip of Al-foil won't do much. As someone previously said, those gigantic CFLs seem much better suited to horizontal mounting in a "wing" or "half-tube" style fixture. I think the same poster described making a simple one with a double-ended screw-in socket, 8' heating duct cut in two lengthwise, and a couple of sheet metal screws. That said, the brooder lamps _are_ very flexible in their placement. Personally, I don't exceed a 55W bulb (linked below) in this fixture because, as you pointed out, I don't like my retinas fried just walking around the room. Nice thing about this particular 55W is the squat design that just about fits inside the 10.5" hemisphere. And not too shabby at 3600 lumens and $16. Here is a link that might be useful: fat 55W CFL

Hi Ladylotus. No, the windows are on the east and north. There will be florescent shop lights hanging from the ceiling above the top shelf, and under each shelf except the bottom. I'll have to see how much they effect the electricity bill, but when I've raised seedlings before (except for winter seeding, of course) I've kept the lights on them 24x7. I also keep a fan blowing in the room to help prevent damping off. The seedlings are a lot of fun, even though they are a fair amount of work when grown indoors, because of all the watering they take once they are growing. You can't let them sit in water, but still they dry out pretty fast so watering is a 'check at least twice a day' and water almost every day sort of thing. Watching them grow is pretty gratifying though, and I love the earthy smell of the seed starting mix and growing plants. It's a good way to help get you through the winter :-)

I'm thrown off because I can't figure out the coloring. Is that a brick wall or just wallpaper? And the wall behind the sofa...is that a dark blue or a dark gray? I don't think the brown sofa looks good against the current color on the wall. If that is indeed wallpaper & you want to keep it, I'd repaint ALL the other walls some shade of white or lighter gray, some color that you can pick up from the papered wall. Right now you have the brick wall, a dark wall, & the other walls still another color. Too much for a small room. Figure out how to take that weird cornice down. I'd remove that bookcase/divider completely. If you feel the need for a "divider", put up a whole new wall but I'd take that bookcase out. It's just a receptical for more clutter/family photos, etc & you already have that shelving unit doing the exact same thing. Use the sofa to divide the space between entry way & living room. If room permits, I'd take the sofa & place it so that the back is parallel to that white console you have by the entry. Position the love seat so the both seating units form an "L" shape. If the sofa is too long, then try the love seat parallel. Place a side table with a lamp between the 2 units. I really dislike "signs" in the house unless they happen to be real, vintage, etc. & connect to the surroundings. See if you can find something else to put behind that white console or buffet table. Not sure where to place the shelving unit yet but once you rearrange the seating, you will find a space. I think most furniture looks ridiculous when placed diagonally like the current shelves are...looks like it couldn't fit in flat against the wall so it was placed on an angle to make it fit. Once the furniture is rearranged, go for details...a rug, pillows, artwork. You may even have room for another small chair . If so, get something in a colorful print. No more brown. It can be difficult to design a room when you walk directly from the outside into your living room & no foyer as a buffer. There are plenty of articles on Houzz about arranging furniture for such a situation as yours. Peruse those & you'll get some amazing ideas. Be careful with hanging art. It shouldn't be hung randomly without regard to size, location, height, etc. You have several smaller pieces that just don't work well.

Ttod, that looks just wonderful. That desk is to positively drool over, and how very special that your great grandfather made it! I love the tree print. The light is nice but I think this would look absolutely perfect beside it...

Thanks! I really, really like the wall color. It's so warm and inviting but still fresh and modern feeling. I so often get a cold feeling in fresh airy rms but this color really does it for me. (Same reason I like Baby Turtle so much!).

Oceanna - I really like that light (where did you find it?) but there is so much Victorian stuff in the house architectural that I try not to add to it anymore. The lamp that I pulled out of the basement for DH's desk compliments the apothecary one really well.

Your vignette is beautiful-- and I have loved that desk since I first saw it in your LR. In fact, I have been looking for a desk for a corner of my LR for about 2 yr and keep remembering the unique details of yours.

Love the Jonesboro Cream-- it is similar to the color I have in much of my house, Tavern Taupe. I think it looks great with a wood tones and black and white photos. I find it generally soothing and calming. It looks wonderful with the hydrangea too! It reminded me that I wanted to get a bouquet of oak hydrangea from my mom.

About 4 months ago I changed my plans for the bosporus flax from the BR to the LR because of how well it works with my wall color. It will look gorgeous with yours too!

I'd love to see the rest of the room--and I think you are on the right path to not overdo the victorian touches. I love the mix you have going.

I just measured a space on MY wall for that IKEA Eiffel tower print so I could visualize and it sounds super! I want to see that photo.........your desk with the Eiffel Tower behind it.

And I'm still bummed that I don't have a chip of Jonesboro Cream. Have to go back and get one.

Question? Have you ever considered doing a decorating blog ttodd? I know you have small children and you probably work. But I think many people would love to see you do one, just a thought.

WOW someone thought of me and a blog?! I'm quite flattered! It would be lovely to be able to do that but computers and I really do not get along on most levels. At least mine at home.

Red - don't you think that massive picture would be just awesome behind my desk!!!!!!!!! It'd be almost like my own window on Paris! Over the wknd I got some more pics hung up in the office and I have to say I am really, really loving it. I know that that having so many pictures covering almost every sq. inch of wall space and horizontal surface is a realtors nightmare and most people would probably say - nope that's too much or what is she thinking, but I just love it! Every picture has a story behind it (even if I don't know who the person is or I haven't been to that place yet). My walls are like a visual library for me and I can't wait until the tiniest detail is done to show you all!

This wknd I hope to get my floating shelves up on the wall beside my desk. I'm going to try and find my old mason jars and load them up w/ my pencils and other desk stuff as well as give DS1 a place to keep his collections of rocks and marbles out of reach of the younger ones.

Yesterday afternoon I laid down on my kids car map rug in the office while the baby played(I was so tired). I looked around and it was soooooo peaceful and warm and family like.

The moment you posted about that picture, I could see the whole thing in my head. And while it would be cool on a bedroom wall decorated Paris Chic, or on a living room wall just to make a statement, putting it behind the desk will lift all of it right out of the ordinary and expected and give that big picture a real point to being. Cannot wait.
