I bought my niece the cutest table and chairs from the 1930's for tea parties at an antique shop, it was adorable.

Since I don't have kids myself I normally don't look at children's rooms.

You didn't say if it was a boy or girl. This is a favorite picture of a little girly girls room, I love it.

Do you have a Bob's near you? I have never bought anything from them, but know lots of people who have, and usually for kid's rooms and playrooms.
My daughter has my grandmother's furniture, which I painted (twice now). For my son, I bought a desk w/hutch on Craig's List and pained it black w/faux wood accents and b/grey stripes, and got a chair from Ikea.
Not sure what style you're going for, but w/kids you can be a little more creative.

If it were me, I would look for older pieces on CL that are solid wood. My boys both had the original Cargo furniture which is indestructible. Spent a fortune on daughter's white furniture years ago from PJ Kids which she ruined with nail polish, etc. Just sold the $1,200 chest on CL for $75.

In other words, I would not spend a bunch of money on it. CL didn't exist when mine were young.

I agree that CL is a great place to buy kids' furniture. Of course, not everyone has access to as many listings as I do living in a major urban area. :)

I purchased a lovely wrought iron bed for my daughter, and then a couple of weeks later found a desk and small dresser.

I bought DD#1 a Stanley Young America twin sized bed. It was expensive, and the post cracked when we moved, I was very disappointed in the quality. When I moved DD#2 out of her nursery and into her sister's room, I didn't want to buy a second matching expensive poor quality bed. So I sold that bed and bought Bassett French provincial furniture from the 50's on Craigslist. Solid wood, heavy duty. DH and I gave it a fresh coat of white paint. We got 2 twin beds, a tall dresser, a bureau with mirror and desk for $300, all superior quality to what you can buy today.
Another vote for Craigslist here.
