Stain for Library builtins??
Comments (4)I caution you on going too dark. What is fine on kitchen cabinets becomes overpowering in a paneled room. How many windows do you have? That can be important too. Here is a blog post with lots of paneled rooms. I say this mainly because my parents library is paneled and while lovely is too dark. My mom wishes she had windows on either side of the fireplace instead of bookcases. As it is, there is a large box bay window in the room but it is too dark as is even with all the floor lamps, table lamps, bookshelf lamps on. Here is a link that might be useful: Paneled Rooms...See MoreAbout the Design Around This threads
Comments (28)I wanted to thank all who were involved in the DAT threads and especially Marcolo. I am planning on building a home from a kit home plan in a few years. One I love is a 1924 William Radford bungalow, but we will probably end up with a story and a half bungalow to get a few more bedrooms. I have been researching these old plans like crazy, and they are amazing. I have found a couple with a more 'modern' layout. When I say modern the kitchen only has two doorways (from DR and outside) instead of the four or five I sometimes see here. Marcolo said something in the Victorian DAT thread and again to Lavender_Lass which is where I originally saw it and then linked back. I was trying to figure out how 'authentic' I should go with the house. That comment was (I am paraphrasing) "I like the idea of seeing a vintage kitchen developing over time. It should represent every decade that it has passed." It made complete sense to me, and it is exactly what I want. I love history (I have an MLS and was waiting for a permenant position at the National Archives when the crappy economy hit, and I decided to be a SAHM). Marcolo had also said (and I do believe this was from the DAT threads as well) "Do not just assume the trends and materials used at the time. Actually do the research for yourself." I know it seems obvious now, and especially since I'm still a professional researcher. It took reading that however to think about our next home in a completely different way. I am now creating a back story for our yet to be built home to create a sense of history and to help determine the finishes. Every detail will be planned before we build because everything will be a piece of a puzzle. I hope to share the back story as well as the home when we are able to build. I do hope more people read the DAT threads because they are awesome. I learned a lot and have saved all of them for reference. I came late to GW to participate in those the first time around, but the collective knowledge and creativity in those threads are amazing. Thank you again everyone for putting in some extra time for those exercises. I have learned a great deal....See MoreLighting for library with poor natural light
Comments (8)What great ideas! There are geniuses on the forum! Fluorescent lights laid on their backs! (Sounds of me smacking my head) Wow! I would love the ambient lighting that would create! And since I plan on having some art objects on the top, that would silhouette them as well. That reminds me: I have a roll of white rope lighting in the basement for a project that fell through. I wonder if that creates heat? I will have to find it and see how much light it puts out. The wall-mounted swing out lamps too. We have one in the room now: maybe IÂll get another. I will look into the piano lights too. We actually do have plenty of outlets in the roomÂexcept that once the bookcases are in and loaded we wonÂt have easy access to any but one. ThatÂs why I have to plan this out in advance. We will have to put extension cords in each outlet and drape them over the top of the cases and make sure they donÂt fall back! bronwynsmom, your library is very beautiful, and much like I would have liked to do in my room. But building soffits and installing hardwired lighting is not in our future. Your library has many wonderful features, maybe I can use something. I love the lighting inside the bookcases at the top and the overall feeling of the room. IÂll save it for an inspiration. My original plan was much more ambitious. With 2 kids in college/med school next year, I have to do this project as inexpensively as possible. The bookcases alone were over $600. But after months of poring over CL and trolling resale shops and not finding enough (or in good enough condition), we had to buy new bookcases. Things like the chairs and tables will be coming from elsewhere is the house. I was originally going to customize the bookcases, but my husband nixed that idea. He wants to see a room actually finished within a reasonable time frame (what a strange conceptÂ) ! So I need to get the feeling of what I wanted in a simpler, less labor-intensive way. Thanks for all the ideas!...See MoreMy Weird Library Experience
Comments (49)It is not only students who are demanding and thoughtless about assignments. We asked the lecturers at our local university to give us a list of items that needed copies prepared by library staff for the next term assignments before they went away. I was told that the pressure of work caused by collecting and photocopying these books would be so great that I would not be able to take leave myself. My husband had the opportunity for us to go for a fortnight free of charge to a lovely holiday island but we had to turn it down. Only a few of the lecturers gave us lists but all those who had not demanded that we prepare their copies urgently after they returned from their trip. Would you believe that they had all gone to the holiday island! I could have gone up there and bugged them for the lists so the staff would have had the work prepared and had my freeby too! I was furious....See MoreRelated Professionals
