Latest stained glass. A little candle box to meditate with. Each of the symbols represents one of the elements - Air, Earth, Fire, Water.

I winged it making the box which was hard, I need to find a good pattern to make stained glass boxes, any leads on books or a site that tells how to make boxes? :D

Also, was hard making the collage, I need to find good software that does that too :D

Hi, Runninginplace. No, "my" couple had a very popular, long-running HGTV show that appealed to probably young housewives with more scrap shutters and old unmatched furniture than money. You'd recognize their name. I just felt their eager audience deserved much better quality design suggestions. In their hands a $50 one-hour project never looked like anything more. I have to admit, I enjoy the Novogratzs' creations, if not all. Some of the stuff they pick up on their blitzes through secondhand shops is *incredibly* ugly, yet they manage to combine all this stuff into cohesive wholes that are far more than their parts. I couldn't possibly turn them loose on my own home, no matter how in need it is, but they are certainly very competent and talented designers. I have the same sort of different viewpoint regarding Newdawn's example of an awful room. I personally OD on bright pinks in approximately a single glance ("awful" color for me), but that's a nice room. And it obviously belongs to someone who can afford to redo any time she or he feels like picking up the phone. In any case, what we find "awful" because we don't like it (that peculiar portrait) and what's awful because it's bad design (fire hazard mess on sorority wall) are two totally different things.

Of COURSE you had to go back and get it. I understand perfectly. Yes, Pottery Barn! I saw them in the catalogue not long ago, and almost bought one. My son brought me to my senses when he said, "Mom, it's really nice but we don't have ROOM for it at the cottage." I guess the decorating gods heard me and put a little box under the cottage for me to find. I loved, LOVED the little numbers under each cubby on your boxes. I'll have to see if I can find little numbers for mine. Love numbered cubbies. They make me feel organized, lol.

Hopefully my warm thoughts of all of you keep you from being too cold. It's crazy. Here too. -35 wind chill by tomorrow night. Tonight -25. Florida was 30 at my friends house and my other friends house in Alaska it was 50 degrees. Brian. Love the ideas about facing the heat towards the doors. We got 16 inches of blizzard snow and extreme flooding and destruction here near the coast. Sunshine so beautiful. Thank you for sharing. It's crazy when ice develops inside on windows like it did in my hallway !

Yes, exactly. Sorry, Bethany, I didn't mean to derail at all. I just also don't want you being discouraged, and I don't appreciate being insulted. Have you considered replacing the current outside door with a French-style door? Those extra glass panels will let in more light, and I think those doors always look so pretty and welcoming. (I'm planning to replace the sliding glass doors in my kitchen with a single French-style glass-panel door myself.) Are you planning to put a TV in there? I always like to have a TV for my guest rooms; it encourages guests to take some time for themselves a bit, and it's just a nice amenity to have (sometimes I'll go hang out in there and watch something on my own, as well, so my kids can have the main TV). Or maybe a bookshelf, in a bright or light neutral color? For the kitchenette, you can buy unfinished cabinets, already made, at any HD/Lowes. I'd paint those white (or bright) to lighten up that nook some. Or hunt around at second-hand/surplus stores and find, say, a vanity that fits that space; build a countertop out of wood slabs--surprisingly easy!--and give it a couple of coats of acrylic or polyurethane. (When my parents converted our basement and added a kitchenette, my dad cut and finished a wood door to use as a countertop, which worked really well.) You could install a "rail" around the space to set the countertop on, with just a couple of 2x4s; then you won't have to worry about attaching it to the cabinets etc. below. Or paint it whatever color you use as your secondary--you don't really need full-on kitchen cabinets there if there's not going to be a lot of cooking going on, and vanities often have more interesting fronts and details than kitchen cabinets. (I know someone who used an old dresser for their kitchenette, actually, and painted all the drawers different cheerful colors; it looked really cute, and they just put melamine plates/cups/etc. and a few snack items in the drawers, and filled the other drawers with linens and things. Your minifridge can fit under that countertop as well, so it has a nice cohesive look, and if you get a flat-front one you could use construction adhesive to glue a panel front to it, for more color and cheer. Or use a spraypaint made for metal, in any color you like! Above it, maybe a nice beachy picture in a white frame? Something to bring a little more interest into that little recess--shelves are good, too, of course. Oh! And in our previous guest room, we made a little feature out of the mantel (it had a small non-working fireplace) using a string of fairy lights with glass beads etc. attached to it, and some votive candle holders (I basically just wound the lights around the candle holders). When the lights were plugged in and the candles lit, it looked really lovely--and much more expensive than the $15 or so I paid in total for the lights and holders. You can get battery-operated lights to use until your outlets are installed. And speaking of lights, are you planning to put in regular floor or table lamps as well as the ceiling lights? I also think you should paint the trim a nice bright color, and maybe that "beam" the runs across the ceiling, too.

So, how many times did you burn your fingers? LOL
I've made a few boxes, a couple with hinges. I remember having to find props to use while I soldered the pieces together. Like anything, the better and faster you'll get with practice.
I have the book "Patterns for Stained Glass Boxes" by Randy and Judy Wardell.
I haven't used it in years. You're welcome to it if you want it.

Good job! I haven't done too many boxes but a jig woulf be good, and the real pros bevel the corners too I believe. And a lot use brass came and put them together, did that once when I worked at a stained glass shop, a notching tool..fun!

yeah I just kinda stuff a big sponge in the middle and worked around it :D I want to do interesting 3d shapes and figure do a few boxes will get me the idea then be able to branch out into more interesting sculptural type stuff :D

Wow Eklypz..you did good. I like your boxes!!! I think morton has a jig for making boxes.

I've yet to try a 3d piece but I will eventually!!!

Thanks!! I am still kinda amazed how strong solder is. When I put a hook on my first piece, I was thinking, "This will fall.." but a week later still there! I just get blown away continually by glass stuff.

Eklypt, I love your boxes! Looks like you did a great job!Very creative idea.
I made jewelry boxes last year so I can understand the challenges of 3D work.

I just had a thought that came out of the blue. What if you got some silly putty or other firm clay type stuff and stood your glass pieces up in them?

Another inexpensive idea is to use a cardboard box. Lay two pieces of glass in it while the box is on it's side, solder them, repeat with next two. You can use a chip clip to hold the upright piece of glass in place while you solder.

I have NO idea where these thoughts are coming from; usually not this creative...okay, who's in my brain?!?!?!?!?!?

Must've eaten you wheaties today huh Cracked??!!! I was reading tonight in one of my stained glass books that you can lay a piece of 2x4 down and nail two more to make a "V" shape and square up to place you box in..a homemade jig that is really cheap to make!!!

\/ Bad diagram I know but its the best I could do!!!!

OT: what type of meditation and/or yoga do you practice? I used to practice Hatha yoga, but my teacher had to close her studio about a year ago. I still run through some poses here and again, but it's no substitute for live instruction. She was SO good, and I haven't been teacher shopping since. (sniff)

OT Haven't done yoga yet but I do energetic meditation that is based on being part of the Earth and spreading love through myself. Kind of just pieced together from various traditions and applied to myself. Mostly with visualizing myself as a tree :D Mostly trying to keep my flighty self grounded!
