" By the way Kim would like to know if you could make her a gazing ball in pinks, purples or yellows any way you can do it she really dosn't care and she definitely wants to pay for it. she loved your mirror and I had showed her a picture of the gazing ball you had done for a donation this past summer. Let me know if you can make her one and don't worry about the cost."

mmmmm???? so I asked for clarification on colors...

this will have to ship to Chicago and because I have a trust issue with bowling balls now, I think I'll build this on a polystyrene base? what do you think? I said 150.00, it is family.

should I or shouldn't I

Sorry for the off the cuff reply...I usually
give responses a little more thought.

    Okay...let's try this again.

Wow, what a great opportunity to get your work out there.
I've never done an orb, but you have, so IS $150 a good price?

Seller used realtor, now FSBO, comission question!

    Q

    Comments (4)
Okay, so I'll have to ask the seller what the specific terms of the contract were that he signed with the realtor? What do you mean by this: "Worst case they will owe commission for a few more weeks with you." Are you referring to a specific time frame that may have been set in his contract? I think his house may have been a bit overpriced before, but is pretty reasonable now. In my opinion, it is priced where it should be now and he will probably sell it quickly with this new price reduction. The house needs a lot of updating though, and this may have been turning many potential buyers away. I just don't quite understand this whole concept that the realtor he had signed with is still entitled to a comission on the house if he sells it to us.

Saw my doctor today and I will have orthoscopic surgery on June 10 and hopefully that will help to fix the problem in my knee. He said it also looks like I have a slight tear in the muscle behind the knee. My reaction was "'YES', Thank you Lord, I'm not crazy after all!" Then I told him about the weird incident one night in February when I was woken up (3:00 a.m.) with a searing pain on the back of my leg above the knee and had no idea what was happening! He said there is nothing to do for this tear, it will heal over and form scar tissue. It's not even safe to go to bed anymore! Teresa

    Buyer Beware @ Marder's Nursery

    Q

I have known Marders and thier wonderful sales staff for years. The only staff I know they let go during this time was the worst I'd ever seen. It sounds from the post like this is probably the one who was let go and needed to be escorted off the premisis by police. Either that or they are smoking some of those "organics". Anyway, Marders has always been one of my favorite nurseries. I don't have a "black Amex" but I am always treated very well there and the staff is more knowlegable than when the poster was there.

I think it's a fair price, maybe a little cheap.

Don't worry about the 1st response, I laughed as I read it! Most of the time I have to exhibit great control over my flippant remarks! lol

I guess the concern is, although she says "in any way you want" does that really mean "I'll love anything thing you want to make?"

see, I have this tapestry urge right now.... and I can totally see this paisely, scrolly floral motif in vivid irridesent pastels all over an orb.... I asked if I can incorporate other colors too, cause I don't want my hands tied....

I want to do a glass order RIGHT NOW!!!! lol

Go for it ,you haven't turned out anything but great art so far,and I know you never will!!!She'll love it but I know how you feel I don't have any confidence in my stuff at all.in fact I'm thinking of backing out of a little half day show in mar. I signed up for.

  • LinLee

Usually the 'any way you want' comment actually means.
    'I haven't got a clue what I like'...but believe me,
if they don't like it they'll let you know.

If this is a business transaction, I would treat it as one.
It doesn't mean yo have to go all over their butt with
legal contracts...just some basic discussion on what is desired/expected and what you can do. You'll feel better about the whole thing if it's not a mystery.
    Boy, rather opinionated today eh?

I was commisioned by someone to do some stained glass for Christmas gifts and was given free reign, it worked out fine. I say that it sounds like you are trusted to do what you do best, create, and the color scheme is a hint of colors hoped to be included! GO FOR IT!!!!

    But GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

polystrene balls run around 25 bucks... that's too steep, think I'll cover a kids ball in crete. That'll give me something to do while I ponder glass choices

About kids balls. I bought 3 at the end of summer for .39 each. I haven't done anything with them. They are all loosing air. So do I inflate them and then crete cover them? Won't they deflate and the whole thing fall apart over time? I thought someone here used them as molds to cut in half and fill not to cover??? Confused in chilly Virginia...

  • nicethyme

Crystal, yes the ball eventually deflates but won't effect the outer concrete shell when it does. You just can't have it deflate before the crete sets up. So keep the temps constant during that period.

here is an excellent tutorial on how to

Klinger has taught me to fill a glass globe lightfixture, round one, with concrete and then mosaic that. I want todo that from now on as the BB thing is too iffy for freezing weather like around here. You fill it and let it sit for a few days and then just smash the glass and you have a cement sphere!!! I've been collecting light globes to do a whole batch up at once. or, use a hypertufa mix for a bit lighter product. Klinger is the Queen of Tufa and Cement!!!

Make sure they know it is $150 plus shipping. I shipped 3 BB's UPS ground from Michigan to Alabama. I had my DH ship it from work cause it was cheaper (saved about $15) and it cost me about $21. Two of the balls made it okay but the third didn't. I had painted it first with metallic paint and then I covered it in the clear glass from the Van Gogh glass that I ruined. When she opened it the glass had peeled off in a couple of areas. I learned not to use metallic paint!

Nice inspiration, it will be beautiful.
Last year a friend asked me to make a bowling ball for her, since she saw mine in the garden and my neighbors front yard. I said o.k., it will be $60, I thought that was giving her a reasonable break. She thought it was too much. So I didnt make it. People are funny.
No, $150 is not too much, a lot of work and material goes into it, stick to your guns. And definitely something in writing.

    LOL

Me too, I can use an excuse to work on mosaics instead of replacing trim boards in DD's room so I can paint... I'd rather buy glass!!!! LOL

And when I order glass for this orb, I will also order some other items... I have sudden urges to make a "niche" like Slow's works, for both my sister and my mother. I want to use poly clay tiles and jewelry and glass... I want to make those little wall boxes with hinged doors and an ornate scrolly topper... I'm so completely jazzed - been staring at Slow's album all morning...

where is that clay? should be on it's way by now

Hi everyone, I'm Annie, Just popping in on your conversation.
I think the suggested design is perfection! If it doesn't work out,
you can always do it anyway on another piece. I am sure it would sell.
I would love to see everyones work, is there a place
    here I can do that?

I was almost commissioned to do three memory Mosaics for Christmas gifts only to have them balk at the 300.00 each
price 18x18 inch sized. They stated that they were giving me items to put on them, why would it be so costly? They supply
10 to 15 "memory items" and I create a collage/mosaic with them. I use Vit tiles, stained glass etc.. to do them. The
substrate costs too. They seriously do not have a clue what it takes to do our art.

    Stand your ground.

    Nice to be here.

  • bianchi3

You know what you should do? After you're totally done and the ball will look gorgeous, send her a picture! She may realize its worth. Some people do not hesitate to buy anything in a gallery, because "OMG, I got this in a gallery! And it has the gallery's name on it. Some famous artist made this!", but look at it differently, when they know someone who mosaics. Somehow they think it should be cheap, because htey're taking it off their hands or something.

Annieb...I love your stuff! Your memory mosaic's are a wonderful idea.

I totally agree that most people you know
think they are helping you out by commissioning something from you, and freak when you charge them what it's worth.
I'v heard this comment.." You made that, it didn't cost you that much" Like my time is free, because I know them, or they are family! I felt like saying, your husband builds
houses....I'll buy the stuff, have him build me one!

My hubby gets that from family all the time...he's expected to put carpet in all their homes for free, everytime they move. Because it's what he does and it doesn't cost him that much to do it. Well it cost him to loose paying jobs to do it. So we fixed that! We moved away!hahaa
