Deciding whether to reupholster or replace 14 year old sofa
Comments (2)The fabric has more to do with the costs of a sofa when comparing reupholstering verses buying a new from a retail location. Unless the seat cushions are latex foam, 15 years is about all your get out of a HR foam or spring cushion....See MoreHow to decide if remodeling is worth it?
Comments (3)realtors will tell you that kitchens and baths sell houses...if remodeling the bath as you like would be too expensive--really price the house well over what homes in your area are selling for then you might not get dollar for dollar back BUT you might sell your house that much quicker--if it came to that... sometimes it does not make sense to remodel twice--like to do something simple for less money and then to do something more expensive later--and I am not talking about just paint vs changing out countertops... more like paint and fixtures vs moving walls/plumbing... you need to decide the liveability of each way you could change the room...and decide what each is worth to you not just in the money but the comfort-- will the more expensive one help you be content with your home for years...then it might be cheaper in the long run.. we have a badly designed master bath and bought the house during construction after just a quick inspection--did not really think/see some of the design flaws--and we lived out of state so did not see the house again until closing--NOT a smart way to buy a house but we needed a contingency contract and that was one way to get one... we should have had our bath/house remodeled more significantly years ago when we had some other things like paint/carpet/tile work done but thought we would be moving in a couple of years and would let the new owners worry about big changes... well, we are still here......See MoreTrying to decide whether to widen window...
Comments (7)Thanks so much for the responses! Yes, those other windows are in a neighboring room that has a nice cathedral ceiling - the kitchen is kind of in the "heart" of the house and is rather cave-like. Calbay03, that is exactly what we are planning, except that the room is only 13.5 feet wide, which just is not big enough for a island + 2 aisleways assuming normal clearances. We're going for a peninsula setup instead. But it'll be great to get that cooktop out of the center of the room where there aren't any good venting options! I'm adding some renditions of our sketchup plans below, with our window options - as you can see, we either have to give up symmetry or extra light. We only have about a foot and a half to the right of the existing window before we bump into the garage wall. It looks like the pricing runs about $300 for a single new window matching our current ones, vs. $800 for a all-new bank of three. I should mention that it isn't just light we are going after...we have a really pretty back yard, and can't see it very well right now. Also, our plan is asymmetric, so perhaps the window symmetry isn't as big of an issue? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Sounds like the labor will be similar for widening vs. adding a small separate window, since he has to support the roof, add headers and deal with exterior trim in either case, so the only cost differential is the $500 in actual window price. No new window = so much storage! Just adding a single window - lots of light, no symmetry: Adding centered 3-panel window. Not much extra light, since we butt up against the garage on the right (shaded area shows existing window area). Adding non-centered 3-panel. More light than single window, but sink no longer centered on anything....See MoreNeed to Decide Whether to Keep Repaired Granite
Comments (37)Stefanie, b/c if your NEED (which I fully related to), I texted the owner of granite store and he said he knows it as White River. I’ll try to call him when he’s at the store and maybe he can look and see if any of them have the little sticker with other name. It wasn’t Kashmir White I saw in the 2nd label. I’m almost sure it was Bianco Romano. But they had another stone there that they verbally called Bianco Romano that looked different. But Suzyq is right re variation. I know if you Google White River, they have some with less waves, some more speckly, and some a little less silver/gray and lighter....See MoreUser
