Back from Williamsburg!

Whew! I'm so dang tired. We went to Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Newport News. And I'm sure some other places I can't remember!

I've never been a history person, but wow, when you're there where it all happened, it really makes it more "personal".

While we were in Jamestown, we watched a demo on glass blowing. Very cool.I wanted to jump the fence and get right in there with them. Poor guys..all dressed up in their colonial garb, working outside in front of those 2000 degree glass ovens. They kinda looked bored with it all. I guess if I was confined to making the same candle stick, vase, or inkwell over and over again, I'd be also. There was a small display of things the glass blowers had done on their own time. Some of those pieces were really nice.

We also visited a couple of plantations, antique malls and galleries. I didn't see any mosaics or stained glass..a lot of pottery though.

One night we went to a mystery dinner theater. Oh, that was so much fun! A couple of the actors kept referring to me as "Ms. Reba McIntire" because of my red hair. I told them "No...she has short hair now!" Mine is quite longer than hers. Oh well. It could've been worse.

It was a great trip with my sweetie as we celebrated our 20th anniversary!!

Im glad that you guys had a great trip. I also am not a big history person but it sounded real cool!!!

That is funny about them calling you "Ms Reba McIntire" I will always picture her now when reading your posts!!!! Shes a gorgeous women so take it as a compliment thats for sure!!!!!

OK, now I see some details! Sounds like a whirlwind trip! Williamsburg is one of those places I visited in jr. high. and later as an adult. I loved it both times! There are some good outlets down there too. Sounds fun and tiring, but you had get to work 'cause we've been waiting to see what you are going to do next!

Happy 20th Anniversary! I always wonder if I can keep from killing my husband so we can make it to 20 yrs....LOL!!

Hello Everyone, Thanks Jim!!! Im hoping that the Agave continues to do well. It does get full sun there, so hopefully it will grow larger and more full. Since i planted it there, it doesnt seem to have done anything as far as growth. Im hoping that its just getting used to its new location and will start to adjust and grow soon in its new location. It has to like it better there thsn in the pot. It was so root bound... I root pruned it before i planted it, so ill keep my fingers crossed!!!! The DR's are quite fun to watch as they develope the Caudex. They all have such a different personality!!! I especially like the one pic that has the close up of the Caudex with the frog hanging on the backside of the pot!!! Thanks for the link...ill have to go and check it out!!! Alex, I do agree with you on wishing the trees would go into dormancy on their own, but i do have to help some of my larger trees. If i dont, then ill have leaves galore dropping all over the house and i cant store them very well. Plus they bring in little pest, so when i start the trimming process, i can spray and keep the little ones at bay... I wish that we had more warm weather, i have some inflos just starting to appear and im sick knowing that ill loose them. Im glad to here that your Ginger is blooming and you still have somethings in bloom! That makes you happy, im sure!!! Take care Alex!!! Randy, I remember some of the pics that you have posted or sent to me from Puerto Rico!! They were beautiful!! I love That place and would love to go back and visit. One special beach down there is called Luquillo Beach, it was an old Coconut Palm Plantation and the locals still have the beach and the park. Quite a site to see how the huge Palms are so large and mature and grow right down to the waters edge. That is a gorgeous beach!!! I do love all Palms, including the tropicsls. I cant pass one up if its a good buy!!! LOL!!! You have your own paradise in GA!! YOu have done a great job with your yard and it looks beautiful!! Keep up the good work!!! Anyone live near the Compton's oak in Williamsburg, Va?

Greengrass, I answered you on the tree forum, but, I will tell you here why they are so special. They are a hybrid of Live oak Quercus Virginia and Quercus Lyrata known as Overcup oak. Your area has some Live oaks, which are at their northern limit. Any colder and the Live oaks can't take the winter temps, the Overcup oaks are hardier, and likely are key to make the Hybrid Compton's oak hardy to zone 5. You are likely zone 7 or 8 in Williamsburg, or close to it. I am getting my Compton's oak seedlings from Mossy Oak natives nursery this coming week. But I will pay for a few extra Acorns, anyways. I believe Hairmetal from the tree forum is interested also. They are similar to the Live oak, but have some traits of the Overcup oak. The thing that hooked me is the fact that they get huge like the Live oak. I may be dead before mine get that big though. But, One of my previously planted Compton's has a nice shape, with horizontal branches, like live oak. Greengrass, I am not sure I could post a link to a pic of the tree, but, just type in your search engine, Google or Yahoo etc. Williamsburg, Va Compton's oak. Well, it will just show a pic of the tree which you could just drive to and stand under it in all it's glory, unaware of how lucky you are to live near it....... Sorry, I got lost for a minute. But, seriously, it is special to those of us in zones colder than 7/8 Williamsburg, va, because we can't grow the Live oak here, and the Compton's oak is a hybrid of Live and Overcup oak, which frequently has many traits of the Live oak, and we can grow it in as cold as zone 5. But, I would'nt think it is worth a fortune, the Mossy oak natives nursery in Mississippi ( I THINK) or Alabama, maybe even Louisiana, somewhere down there, are selling seedlings for approx $9-$10 a seedling. But on ebay you may make some bucks on seedlings or seeds. Well, I will take about 6 acorns if you are still sharing them. But, Let me know your terms, as I mentioned on the tree forum. Hairmetal is in zone 7, I believe, but he has mentioned, (or someone else living in his area) maybe NJOASIS, had mentioned snow load is a problem, not cold temps. So the Compton oak being deciduous sometimes may be good for hairmetal, I am guessing at all this, hair will tell you if he is interested, etc.

Gosh I'm all ears on this thread. This year I built 3 raised beds (4' x 8' x 20") & have learned that Pleasure Island is the land o' destructive insects (I have also learned that frass totally grosses me out). I used soil for the raised beds we scraped when slating in a formerly jungly side yard - it is quite black & very amended from years of wax myrtle & Iliagnus but still sand. I am all ears for tomatoes which handle heat/humidity & are sweet/tart/umami delicious. Open to all size recs - thinking of Mule Team, Arkansas Traveller, Creole, Black Krim, break O Day, Carbon, Constoluto Genovese, Tomande,Jeff Davis & others (LOL). Would love a big tasty yellow bicolor that could handle our wretched summers. Used to eat these as a kid in western NC - they were 1 slice makes a sandwich - plenty of tart, sweet, meat & gel to soak the white bread/mayo - Mmmm, but that was way up in the mountains & I am now within 200 yards of the ocean. Looking for some info on a strain called "Isis Brandy" - read mention of it but no source (cross between Isis Candy cherry & Brandywine). Have Tomato Growers Exchange catalog, bedtime reading, waiting for more. Thanks folks!

That's fascinating! It's mind-boggling that they had the knowledge and ability to move homes back then. Our ancestors were awesome. When I look at the architecture and millwork in old buildings, I can't believe what they accomplished with their primitive tools. There is a lot of history in our commonwealth. I love reading the history of our little VA town, which was settled in 1738, and saw a lot of action in the Revolutionary War and Civil War.

Sounds like fun! I have low tolerance for those "touristy" areas. We have a place here called Greenfield Village.. similar on a smaller scale. Nice to spend tine with your Hubby on your 20th!!This year was our second and DH didn't even mention it. That'll get thrown in his face soon!!

I love the glass blowing. I always wanted to do that, but I'm afraid I'd look like phantom of the opera - all scarred up from being clutzy!!

Ahem.. of course, you need to tell him that the 21st is REALLY the big one and you should go to Europe and see some of those famous mosaics firsthand!!

We had planned for years to go to Europe someday..But I messed around and didn't get our passports. I'll work on getting that accomplished next week.
Yep shrty, I'm not a big fan of tourist stuff either. Thats why we thought going after school started back would be best. Of course there were a couple of field trips going on..oh well.
I didn't go to the outlet stores. I knew hubby wouldn't be into it. He went with me to this big Yankee Candle Store so I didn't want to push my luck.
We did go to this big pottery place though. They sold lots of other stuff too. I bought a big square ceramic platter to go on top of my birdbath!! They had 3 colors, cobalt blue, mustard yellow and green. DH told me to get all 3 cuz I might make another one someday. I like it better than the round concrete one I had, but it's still not PERFECT. I guess I'm being too picky..

What a great way to spend your anniversary! Hubby and I try to get away for a ours every year. I always enjoy that.
We even celebrate the anniversary of our fist date every year.
