ISO help with entry/breakfast area used by dogs

Our breakfast area is not used for eating, but for dog crates and entry/exist to the deck and yard.

We've always ended up throwing muck boots, etc. on a plastic tray on top of one of the crates. but would really like something a little more attractive. We can't use a floor-level cubby-type bench because our Goldens will pull the shoes out and carry them around all day :)

I'm thinking of something like the piece below, where the shoes could go inside (I'd have to put some kind of tray on the bottom, I guess, to protect from water) and the top could be used for a few jackets, which we already hang on the wall for when we let dogs out in rain. But, would the enclosed area end up terribly smelly from wet, outdoor shoes?

I know our situation is a little, well, unusual, but I'd love to hear suggestions. I have the entire wall and area under the windows to work with. BTW, you're seeing vinyl on top of the hardwood, which would otherwise get destroyed.

Thanks!!
