I don't know how old he is. I would get rid of all the things you say he doesn't use...like the chair. And the storage bench...quilt can go somewhere else I assume. Where does he do homework? Desk and chair and bookshelves in my family are always a priority.

My 2 boys always had twin beds all the way through highschool. They had This End Up bunk beds which are REALLY sturdy and they shared a room till their last 2 years of HS then we simply separated the full twins ( nice thing about TEU is that they are not little twin beds).

That is just how we did things. I never saw any reason for larger beds and they never had a chair in their rooms to sit on except the desk chair as they never would have used it...they always read in bed.

So really it depends on his habits as well as what habits you want to encourage. So that depends on his age as they get less "easy" to change as they age LOL. Good luck c

If you are changing beds, twins would be a better way to go if you have room. That way if/when he has friends over, they have a place to sleep.

You might also consider one of those loft beds that saves your floorspace underneath. When boys hit their teens they all seem to need at least a full-size, and you can get the loft bed in a full-size or twin.

If your ds needs more length, I don't think that a full size will provide it. IIRC, the added length starts w/ a queen size, unless you choose to use a twin XL like in college dorms. I have a pair of twin XLs in a guest room, since they provide the same amount of space (per person) as a shared king bed, but are more versatile.

He's 10.5, and about average height (4'8"?), I would consider loft bed but we have 8ft ceilings and ceiling fans. When we designed the house I modified stock plan to cut the closet in half to have alcove for desk. But he does his HW now in kitchen or FR (on a lap desk - he seems to prefer that to table/desk). The only thing I was thinking was that he might have a computer when he got older, but now it's likely it'll be a laptop. We also have a study that DH might share (BR#4, attic stairs instead of closet there). We might even put the twin (w/o headboard) as a daybed/guest bed against the attic stairs there once we get desks and bookcases figure out (our books are stilkl in the attic 2 yrs after move).

He likes to read on his bed - I have mentioned getting rid of the chair but he hates to give anything up (even the Hot Wheels I packed away more than 2 yrs ago to move, he just rediscovered them when I was preparing for yard sale)!

I just measured rather than going off the plans (don't know where they got 14'3", and I didn't change footprint, just took out half the closet). The narrowest point, from door to outside wall, is 9' 6", where the bookcases are backing up to DD's closet is another foot for the 10' 8". From north (windowless - we moved that window to the back wall) wall where bed & dresser are to closet door is 13' 8.5" (baseboard to baseboard), the desk area (backing up to tub)adds another 33.5" for 14' 6".

DD's room (BR#2) is actually (baseboard to baseboard) 12'11" x 14'6". But she has massive furniture and is 5 yrs younger, so will be in the house longer.
