Help-bathroom mirrors, can I hang them off center?

I bought two gorgeous mirrors to hang over the sinks in our new master bathroom, but failed to measure them before I had them ordered...they are 34x34 and the space directly above my sink is only 30" wide, with a drppoed makeup area in between the two sinks that is 36" wide.. Would it look terrible if I hung them off center over the sinks so that they overhung into the makeup area? I love the mirrors and can't return them...

Here is the bathroom cabinetry plan. There is a wall on the left side so I can't overhang the mirror to the left... and I'll post a picture of the mirrors. I really love them and want to use them if I can!!

Thanks so much! Here is the layout for our bathroom. It looks like I can fit a 33" cabinet (a 12" bank of drawers with a 21" door) and place the sink on the 21" side. I think it will work. There will be one large mirror framed with mosaic tile that covers the wall (mosaics will run a 4" frame around the mirror). With the sink off center I can do without the backsplash on the side wall too. Now to speak with the contractor as the rough plumbing last week before they laid the subfloor earlier this week. I'm essentially shifting the sink about 3" from the original plan so hopefully it's not too much of a pain to do this. Thanks!!

Natebear and snookums2 thanks to you both for commenting. I like the oval and that was always going to be the mirror, the one with the frame #1. Then I found that frame material and it looks lovely with my paint choices and the marble. The vanity will be painted a semi sheen light med gray. The walls are a light gray. Both will have blue undertones that really pick up the hints of blue in the finish on the frame. The sconces may have to go. I really like them but they are bigger than I thought they would look. I bought them online. The vanity will take up some of the depth to help offset the size of the sconces I think. The location of the sconces are set, but the style may have to change. The #s1 and 2 seem safe to me. #8 I am liking now, but it changes moment by moment! HElp! I will not commit to the mirror until the vanity is in in a week or 2. But I want to get some input with what I am thinking, and you guys always come through with great feedback.

Look for a horizontal vanity type light. Some have movable back plates to cover an off center box. Others can be easily adapted to allow you to mount it to your box. Also, look for one with a continuous back plate that is over 4" tall. That way it will fully cover your box. Your electrician might have to do some "custom" work, but it's nothing major.

ThatÂs what I was afraid of. I didnÂt want to put ideas in peopleÂs headsÂbut that is the reservation I have. I think having to use it on one side of the wall, asymmetrically, doesnÂt work. I was SO sure it would look great, and be really like the finishing touch in this room. Darn! The thickness, bulkiness, of it bothers me too, in that place. Too much mass. I thought, before I tried it, that it would balance the weight of the solid looking vanity. Instead it just makes it look like too much weight on the left side of the room and nothing on the right. Having to one side bothers me with the light fixture too, and I love that light. It doesnÂt show well in the photos, but is a stained glass repro I ordered from a craftsman lighting company, in a custom size. The mirror is discontinued, so I canÂt get another to balance it better. It doesnÂt look right centered on the big mirror either. Too odd when you are standing in front of the vanity. Sigh. I love this mirror. Buying this one when it went on clearance was what made me decide to have a craftsman bathroom in the first place! (Well, that and it opens off a craftsman family room.) I have one open wall on that room, where I used to have a framed picture. IÂll try propping it up there. The craftsman family room already has a mirror.

Prop them up and see if the placement works for you. If not, I would suggest centering one of them over the make-up area and placing a rectangular or square mirror in a complementary frame over each sink. You could use the other quatrefoil mirror elsewhere in your house.

Fun2BHere - thank you! I had not thought of that and that would definitely allow me to at least use one of the mirrors in there. That would solve my lighting concern too since if I offset the mirrors I would have to offset the lighting as well (its a new construction so I have to physically look at is drywall right now). I'm feeling better already!

The mirror above a vanity bowl should be smaller than the vanity. For your area, you want 24" wide mirrors. And, personally, while lovely, I do not think your mirror's shape is suitable for use as a vanity mirror. It's too awkward in shape for it's primary mission which is to provide a good visual reflection. They would be great as accent mirrors somewhere that actually seeing yourself in the mirror wasn't important.

I would use either a large mirror that goes across the whole area, or individual mirrors over each sink. You can go up to 30" in choosing 2 smaller mirrors, just don't go wider.

I would sell the mirrors you have or use them elsewhere in the house.

I'm afraid I agree with GreenDesigns.
They are wonderful, but you will ruin your bathroom's design integrity if you use them in the wrong place, and I think that is the wrong place.

Your bath mirrors must hang centered on your sinks, or the composition will drive you crazy, not to mention having to stand to the side to get your face centered in the mirror. And they are much too powerful in design to work flanked by two more, unless you just mirrored the whole wall. Then you could hang one in the middle on top of it.

Surely you can find good places for both of them? Do you have a fireplace with equal space on both sides of the chimney breast, for instance? They'd look great hung over a pair of bookcases that were, say, 3' tall and 4' wide. Or on the end walls of your dining room, to hang them opposite each other on those walls? if you use the short walls, the distance between them will minimize that eternity thing that happens when mirrors are hung opposite each other. Or hang one upstairs and one down, if you have an upstairs.

Maybe a weird suggestion, but it seems to me that if you tilted the mirrors and hung them on the diagonal (so that one of the square points was on top instead of a rounded part), they would be less wide. If you are open to that idea, you might measure to see if they'd fit that way. I'm not sure if the mirrors would look odd that way, but it might be worth a shot.
