I have a book on bulbs here and it says that the most prolific of daffodils needs to be divided every five to six years. Some daffs are slower to increase, in which case you can also just divide them every decade or so. I grow Mount Hood, this is the second year they will bloom and already the flowers on each bulb have tripled and there are bulbils in sight as well. I might have to divide mine every four years... I guess it is best that you keep a journal for your daffs and monitor closely how much they increase each year. If you have trouble seeing how more new growth could come up in the limited space between this year's growth, that would be a sign that it is time to divide. I can't find the bit about when to divide these, but I gather all bulbs are best divided during dormancy, which would mean any time between the moment the leaves fall off and the moment the ground freezes, although I think earlier is better. I think that fall is a bad idea because by then, the plant may have grown more roots that reach deeper, and it will be that much harder to lift them, plus the new root growth would be wasted and it wouldn't have enough time to regenerate properly by next spring. But this is just my admittedly not perfect logic speaking. I would try to do it as soon as the leaves fall off. That way, you do it before new growth starts but after the plant is done producing for the current year. It would then be about to start using its gathered reserves to grow new roots, so your newly transplanted daff would be nicely nestled into place by the time spring comes.

Oh Lord, this happens all the time..in the store and Ebay/online. lol. I want to kick myself, moreso, when plants are on sale. Just last wk, our grocery story had 4" potted plants for 1.50. Most were plants I have, but there were also some really nice Crotons..Passed them up, and now regret it. lol 6/7+ yrs ago, while grocery shopping, I stopped to look at plants. A novel idea. lol. There sat, one-solo, green-leaf with orange center plant, price 6.99. I had no idea what it was. It went in the cart, then put back. Home I went w/my groceries..While putting everything in place, that plant was on my mind. I thought of reasons not to buy it, but there was ONE reason I dwelled on this beauty. It was different. A plant I didn't have. 2 days later I went back to the store..sole purpose, to buy this NOID plant..it was gone! I was devestated. I went home, and even though I thought it was fate, that pretty plant was inbedded in my brain. A wk or so later, dh and I went shopping..I talked about this plant all the way to the store, and then some. lol. So, I drag dh to the plant section..sure enough, he found it behind a group of other plants..The same plant I had in my cart the wk before. I didn't hesitate. This time it went in the cart w/o hesitation..Ironically, while shopping, 'for actual food' two women walked up to me and admired the NOID plant..lol..After getting home, I did some research and ID'd it as Chlorophytum 'Fire Flash.' At the time, Fire Flashes were rare. The only Chlorophytums discussed were Spider Plants: Green, Variegated and Bonnie's. And Bonnie's were new. In IL anyway, and here on GW. Christopher..2.00 for orchids..Do you know they're type? Were they in bloom? If so, at that price, one of each color flower would have followed me home..lol..OR, one of each type..That IS a bargain. Angel..pink and green flowers? You and I are different..Because of the flower color, it too would have followed me home..lol Never seen an AV w/green and pink blooms.. Mr Sub..Variegated Agave..1 month..way too long. Don't hesitiate..Var Agava's are usually pricey. Next time, grab it..lol Bunny...LOL.. Dieter, I will continue to be on the look-out for my periwinkle. :) Jeff, I just returned from a trip around town checking out different nurseries and I found one that I really like. It's called Columbus Flower Market and they had loads of nice looking perennials. I especially was appreciative of their shade loving perennials. I bought a couple of heucheras (amethyst mist and green spice). They had another that I loved the look of...had a peach colored folage to it, but I moved on to other plants. ;) I bought a couple of strawberry begonias that she assured me grew in her own yard and returned. I was not so sure about that, but thought I'd give it a try. I bought an evergreen shrub I've been hunting...fragrant sarcococca (sweet box). And I bought a holly fern. Now I may have to return for one of her beautiful painted japanese ferns and great expectation hosta, which is one of the most beautiful hostas to me. She had lots of other choices there as well, but I figured I'd gotten as much as I could handle getting in the ground for now. Especially since my Frankly Scarlett daylilies and tea olive keep looking at me with such a forlorn "don't forget about putting us in the ground soon" look. Thanks for the tip about the Jemison nursery. I rarely get north of montgomery but it might be a nice little excursion to make this summer before I go back to the classroom.

I always take off my jewelry every night before bed, even my wedding band. I like to apply hand cream, and I just don't like sleeping in it. I used to just put it on my nightstand table, but after a few scary 'can't find my engagement ring' situations, I realized I needed a better solution. (Apparently my 5 year old DD already has a taste for bling. She was wearing it very proudly! lol) I found this little clamshell bowl at a local store for $3. I like that it is more like a bowl than a dish, so little eyes can't see shiny and sparkly things easily. And now I always know where my rings and watch are. Oh, and also visible in the photo. I use granite samples I've picked up during my kitchen remodel process as coasters.
