Undercabinet mounted kitchen TV recommendations

I posted this in the electronics forum and have yet to get a response so I thought I would try it here since this appears to be a more active forum. We are remodeling our kitchen and I thought it would be nice to have a swivel down, undercabinet mounted TV. It does not have to have a DVD player b/c I am not sure how much we would use one in the kitchen. I'm thinking something larger than 10 inches since I would like to be able to see it as far away as our kitchen table. The nearest bar stool would be 9 feet away so I'm thinking the nearest kitchen seat would be at least 15 feet away from the set. But, it would be close to where I would wash dishes and do my cooking prep. So, what are your recommendations?????

Forget about them, they are all crap.

You should look at a traditional LCD/LED set in an appropriate size and a mounting bracket for the wall.

I really don't have a wall to put it on. My kitchen will basically have cabinets on every wall and then a large bay window. So, which is the least crappy then?

Your biggest issue will be the antenna. If you have a house antenna, you'll want to install a splitter and run a cable to your TV. The aerial that comes with the TV could be very cumbersome if it needs to be adjusted, especially if it has to stick out from under the cabinets. Keep in mind that each time you split the antenna cable, you lose at least 5db of signal. Depending on how many times you've already split the cable and how strong your signal is, you may have to add an amplified distribution. This is all simple to do, and worth considering. You also want to be able to plug the tv in so make sure there is a receptacle close enough where you can hide the wiring and not have to use any extension cords. Don't mount the tv where it can be exposed to steam from cooking, coffee pots, hot oven and water from the sink. If you mount it near a microwave, you will get disturbance while the microwave is running. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, it's worth the effort. In my case, when I wake up in the morning and am having my coffee before tackling my day, it's great to catch the news and weather sitting at the breakfast nook.

Andrea - I looked through my kitchen materials and didn't find it - I think it might be this as I have a vague recollection of "wire mold". For code - you must have a GFCI version. Ours are black, the link shows an ivory version - the key is the strip of angle wood to mount it - much better than the commercial version which actually mounts on the backsplash just under the cabinet trim. Used only one switch for UCL and nuked the wall outlet in my baking area. The corner outlet - take it or leave it - DH leaves his coffee machine plugged in. 2LittleFishies - mounted standard boxes under her cabinets. Hope this is somewhat helpful.

Thanks guys! I knew I'd get good suggestions here. Biochem, thanks for digging up that post...I actually remember looking at that thread a few months ago (before the TV issue was on my radar screen). I think we're going to combine solutions shown here...we have an open cab over my fridge which currently houses cookbooks, but we're going to give that swing-arm mount a whirl and see if the TV makes sense up there. Hopefully eventually pics will make it into some sort of 'finished!' thread....but there's still lots to do, although the guts of the kitchen are in. Still have bs, crown/trim, painting, final coat of poly on the floor...and the real dilemma, where to put the darn microwave! At least I can check the TV thing off my list though! Thanks again!

sombreuil_mongrel - Thanks. Visited the site where you purchased your Peerless wall mount and also the Peerless site where there was a lot of information on their products. Found one articulating mount for my 22" (depth 3.25 in) TV that is only 1.23" from the wall with arms that expand out 14.46". They also have a pivot/tilt model with one arm that is 1.88" from the wall and extends to 9.31". I will probably go with the former due to its size and verstility.

Maybe antss meant the wall under a cabinet (between upper cab and counter top--or just set it on the countertop). That's what we're going to do--I'm going to find a size that will fit under the upper cabs, but on the wall just up off the counter (if possible). I didn't like any I saw of the LCD under-cab swivel type. We had an old-style, under-cab TV in the last kitchen and it logged more hours than the others in the house.

That wall would be my backsplash wall and so I would think it would look awkward to tile around it. Plus, the spot I had in mind was under the corner cabinet, since that counter goes back further and has never been terribly usable space anyway. Setting it on the counter top may be an option but I liked the fact that you can put the swivel sets up flush with the cabinets when you're not using them, if you needed that counter space for something. I like the versatility of that, as opposed to having one that sits on the counter all the time. Surely, someone has one that's not been too awful??
