RECIPE: Arthritis Help!

My 9 year old son was just diagnosed with Juvenile Rhumatoid Arthritis this week. I was wondering if anyone out there knows what he should and shouldn't be eating or if there is a good book that I could get on nutrition for arthritis. I know there are certain foods to stay away from and some that help. I would appreciate any help.

I'm surprised you haven't gotten any responses yet. This I would think a lot of people would know about, more then just me. Oh well, here at least is what I've learned about diet and arthritis from my own research. I myself am 33 years old and a former dancer. I had knee surgery when I was 16 after which I was diagnosed with rheumatoid and then later just regular arthritis in both knees. Now at 33 my knees are just shot and I need new ones. The main thing I've learned about arthritis, is you have to figure out what works best for you. Since your son is so young I would highly suggest focusing on diet and excercise over anti-inflamatories. At least for me I've found diet and excercise works better then perscription anti-inflamatories. I myself really never noticed the anti-inflam I was on never did anything anyway.

First of all I think it helps to understand how arthritis works within the body.

#1. For most types of arthritis Uric acid is one of the main things that gets arthritis going. The higher the uric acid levels in the fluids around the joints gets, the more painful and stif you become. So the objective thru diet and excercise is to keep those levels as low as possible.

Vitamin C and the mineral Zinc are the two main nutients that help prevent joint deteriation. So I would make sure your son is taking a good multi-vitamin mineral suplement on a daily basis. You might also want added vitamin C as well.

Now for diet, as a kid this is probably going to be the hardest part for your son. Things to either moderate or stay away from all together. Remember this is the stuff you're going to have to figure out what works best for your son.

#1 Very little if any red meat seems to be one of the biggest recomendations. More fresh fish and a little chicken now and then seems to be recomended. For myself I have have cut out all red meat and focus on fish and chicken. Lots and lots of fresh fruits and vegetable is an absolute must. That one might take some w

I was also suprised that I haven't received any help, but I have been doing research of my own and agree with everything you said. He also goes to Physical Therapy twice a week along with our home program. The doctors say this is the kind of JRA he will outgrow, so we are going to do everything we can to make sure that happens. Thanks for your help!

Hi Elly, Most doctors will not recommend it for some reason. Maybe they get a kickback for the drugs they prescribe or something, but I know a number of people who take it and it works. I know others who have tried it and it didn't help. It helped one lady that I recommended it to in a matter of a few days, but like I said, it took 3 months for me. I suppose it just depends on the type of arthritis you have or something. It is expensive, but the relief I got in that one finger is worth it. Good luck with help for your arthritis. Here you go and all you have to do to get Ann's wonderful cookbook is ask her. She shares. You might try emailing through GW. Tracey Bagels ====== Source: Hors d'oeuvres Cook Book. I have typed it exactly how the recipe is printed in the book. If you have a bread machine or kitchenaide by all means use it to do most of the kneading. I always like to finish the kneading by hand. You can also make these in to normal size bagels. I have used this recipe for over 20 years. I have tried other recipes but this is my favourite one. 2 cups warm water 2 packages active dry yeast 3 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon salt about 5 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, unsifted 3 quarts water with 1 tablespoon of sugar Cornmeal 1 egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water about 2 tablespoons poppy or sesame seeds. . Stir together water and yeast in large bowl of electric mixer; let stand 5 minutes to soften yeast. Stir in the Sugar and Salt. Gradually mix in 4 cups of the flour and beat at medium speed for 5 minutes. With a spoon, stir in about 1 1/4 cups more flour to make a stiff dough. turn out on a floured board and knead until smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky, (about 15 minutes); add more flour as needed to prevent sticking - dough should be firmer than for most other yeast breads. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until almost doubled ( about 40 minutes to 1 hour). Punch dough down and divide into thirds. Set 2/3 of dough aside on a floured board; cover with clear plastic. form remaining 1/3 dough in a log and cut into 16 equal pieces. To shape, knead each piece into small ball and poke thumbs through centre. With one thumb in hole (hole should be at least 1/2 inch) work fingers around perimeter, shaping ball into a small donutlike shape about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Place bagels on a floured board or tray and let stand 20 minutes. Bring water-sugar mixture to a boil in a 4 to 5 quart pan; adjust heat to keep it boiling gently. Lightly grease a baking sheet and sprinkle with cornmeal. Lift bagels carefully and drop into water (about 6 at a time) boil gently for 1 minute turning only once (30 seconds each side). Lift out with slotted spoon and drain very briefly on paper towels, and place on baking sheet. Brush with 1/3 of the egg yolk glaze, sprinkle with seeds and bake in a 400Â° oven for 20 minutes or until richly browned. cool on racks. Repeat with remaining 2/3 dough (you may need to punch it down before shaping,) working with 1/3 at a time. Makes 48 cocktail size bagels.

I feel your pain. Suggestion: try allrecipes.com,,they have some collections like Xmas extra with all of it together. That might help and you can do an advanced search where you put in name of recipe or main ingred you want or don't want in a recipe,,that could help you track down some lost stuff. Plus I like that they are rated and people tell how the dish turned out,,what improvements they made etc. I can bring up bread pudding without raisins or if I have extra bananas on hand I pulled it up using bananas in the bread pudding and got hits there too. About.com in their food section has some wonderful recipes that I've made for years and lots of collections too. Now you got your work cut out for you in deciding....that is the hardest part you know. I hope you have a great first hosting experience,,,just remember, it's just one meal,,this won't make or break a persons life. Why don't you ask some that are coming to "bring your favorite XYZ dish" to help you out? I've done those,,"I'll do the whole thing dinners" and by the time I'm thru, I'm too tired to enjoy it,,I'm broke and say I'm not doing this again. Terezosa: Yes and No. If you want to buy from the guy down the road: NO. It's illegal to buy from someones house. If you want to buy from a pot store: yes, but you can only have a certain amount on you at any given time. If you want your drug plan to pay for your pot or oil, you go to a doctor (not your GP, but a special doctor that specializes in it, which is why I gave a link where in Calgary you can get your prescriptions written) and have it filled to get reimbursed from your benefits plan. My husbands specialist was very quick to say YES when I suggested my husband try oils and smoking pot to relieve his headaches. HI SHERRYMy son also has arthritis he is 12 years old and first got it at 10yrs. I know what you are going through I hated him being on all those meds that do not cure anything infact they cause all sorts of other problems so beware. I have just found a good Doctor that is also a Naturapath that did a lot of allergy tests on him and found that he is allergic to wheat, yeast, gluten, pork and other things. He has shown me how to test him so I do this before he puts anything in his mouth he can eat tomatoes and lots of things that others have to avoid, So whats good for one may be bad for another. So my suggestion to you is get him tested because if he does have allergies they will aggravate his arthritis even more I'm here in Australia so I don't know what you would call these type of Doctors but if you can get help please take my advice and get him tested. My son is so much better he feels and looks better as he's had a very bad two years I just wish I had done this sooner, it takes some sorting out as far as the food goes but its worth every bit of effort to see his off thoses dreaded meds and no more stiffness and the pain is slowly going.
