another VOTE from me...it's a quick one-pics!

I know this is not *really* a kitchen question but the open rooms make it relative (plus the folks over at decorating seem a bit :/ recently) and I truly value your opinions here. My last undecided finish chioce is door hardware. I am down to 2 choices "egg" and "handle". You can see my cabinet pulls on my other vote thread here and please keep in mind my faucet fixtures (posted pics at end). All finihes are brushed nickel, and the doors are a 2 panel style. Thanks again in advance!

Gosh - I feel like I need to anguish over these decisions even when they're not my own!!

First - on your cabinet hardware placement: I like #2 in both cases

Second - on your hardware: I like #2, "egg" I think it looks a little better with the cabinet hardware. (I do really like the other choice "handle" as well, which is what caused my moment of anguish!)

The 7' gate is a double gate the way it's set up, it's two 3.5' gates that meet in the middle. Since it will match the railing, I think it won't look bad at all when it has to be closed. Most of the time it will be open. I do trust my dog in 99% of situations but not with squirrels. He is part terrier (at least the vet thinks so) and he really, really loves to chase squirrels. He is off-leash trained & we go for walks on trails & can call him back if he chases a squirrel or chipmunk, but the time delay between me noticing him going after a squirrel and calling him back could be long enough for him to get into the street. Our front yard is only about 50' deep & he's a FAST dog. He can cross that distance in a few seconds. The good news is that we are going to add the gate at a later time, so we have time to think about the overall effect before committing to that purchase. I think 7' is wide enough for the 5-6 steps we'll have there, though. The stairs will still appear to be significantly wider than they are tall.

Another rug, another vote

Unfortunately, the Adeline rug has too much green to work. The wall color is really very pretty but it's proving to be hard to work with, I guess because cobalt blue has cycled "out" and spa/tiffany blue is "in." (They both work in my house!) It's also a tad too close to the classic traditional Persian rug for me. I've been to the 2 largest local rug stores as well as done bits & pieces of browsing here & there. I'm afraid to buy anything online but the in-person choices are very, very limited. I've never seen a carpet pattern interesting enough that I'd want to turn it into a rug. Argh! (sound of frustration) Anyone else who wants to post here, go to my other post today on the same subject instead -- someone graciously photoshopped both alternatives into the FR pic. Thanks y'all.

Boxerpups we do have a yellow lab to complete our kitchen! One more picture from our kitchen with the exposed brick from chimney. I like the gold, husband likes the bronze which is the first time he has had much of an opinion and why a decision has been so hard. The gold handle looks really bright in this picture with the morning sun shining.

Deedles - Hm, Hm, HM! As I mentioned earlier, my partner prefers the glass range hoods while I tend to prefer the more traditional chimney if we have to have one (and we do, of course). I'm not really crazy about most of them and the ones I do get drawn to are too expensive and too powerful for my little kitchen. I also worry about glass cabinets, especially with narrow cabinets by the range and a blind corner. Those just tend to be messy, messy cabinets! If I had the spare room and they were big enough that I could display bowls/serving dishes, though, I could live with it. People keep suggesting I am going to need more space for spices/oils, though. It's great to see a rendering of this, though - and people can chime in. Does it help to bring the glass over to that wall or no? That was so generous of you to take time to mock it up for me! Thanks so much! Rococogurl - Well, it's validating to know modern cottage is tricky even for designers. I am constantly yanking myself away from too modern or too cottage. I just keep reminding myself to keep it simple overall. And, now it is worse because some of the cabinets I am considering are very furniture like for the lowers. Especially when they are used in applications like finished backpanels on islands and peninsulas. I really love the look but keep asking myself if I can have what I want or need to pare it down... or need to just pick different stains that don't interest me as much. If we go two-toned, I either want a stain as close to black as I can get, a dark brown or a walnut. The idea would be stained lowers, painted uppers. I like that wood tone. But, even if I nix the legs and fancy parts and just have the paneled peninsula, is that too much for a modern cottage? *sigh* Probably... We are sliding in the dangerous zone of materials, and I so hope you are around when I get there (and I need to start getting a direction on that like immediately!). The window IS generally very MCM, though my aunt has put it in 2 very traditional kitchens in Florida and it works for her. It would definitely be safer with the window to go full-out MCM. However, while I am in a 1950's ranch, I'm in one that has these cottagy/traditional touches) - some by us and some by prior owners. We have paned french doors to the den and traditional white mantels on our 2-sided fireplace. On the den side, it is flanked by rather traditional white cabinets on the bottom. We also sided the house in vinyl shake with thick white trim - and put in windows with a grid on the front. A lot of the interior touches could get ripped out, but the project is already so darn huge and I do like modern cottages so I have been working with that idea. A lot of the kitchens I am drawn to are far more traditional than I could pull off here, though, and I have been warned to keep it simple. The stacked stone is from an inspiration kitchen I considered replicating here, but people said it was neither cottage nor modern. And, then, of course, there's the issue of stacked stone so close to the range. lol Here's a pic: (I liked how the stacked stone played with the large format glass tiles so it didn't feel so cold...) Here's another kitchen that combines stacked stone with glass tile (and a slate, to boot, tiled under the island looking like stacked books IMHO - Marcolo had recommended I: "Think slate" at one point in this saga.) And, this is a GW'er kitchen that I think does a great job with modern cottage. I might be able to have tall cabinets across the den with glass on top like that - and I picked out a drum pendant for the DR sort of like this, but with a little bling. I'd go with a different BS and I'll have frameless cabs, but I think this is a great kitchen. Do you see modern cottage? If we went walnut/white, Majra's new kitchen is a great inspiration. Ultimately, though, I agree with you. The cabinets I choose are going to narrow down tile and counter options. It seems those 3 decisions are best made together. And, that's going to prove very challenging for me... I have a hard time finding counters I love, so am considering spending a lot of money for a basic quartz that I think would work with my house but is a lot of money for simple... Tile overwhelms me with the countless choices. And, I'm totally drawn to 2-toned kitchens but am not sure I should go that way in my small, dark 50's ranch! Bleh! I keep hoping I find an inspiration picture that just pulls it all together and I can point and say "I want that!". Problem is, I have that reaction to a billion pictures, and yet, none at all...

SQ- These last details are what I am having the most trouble with. I usually know exactly what I want when I see it, but this is a new design style for me and it doesn't come as naturally! Show me modern and it's a snap decision.

I like the egg because it follows the kitchen hardware look. DH likes the handle because he just prefers handles. I do like handle also, but I think it is too different from my bathroom faucet handles and might look like a last minute decision. I know in my head they shouldn't *match* and I struggled with my pendants as well because of this-I ended up with different finishes and metals because I fell in love with each fixture on it's own.

Let's see what other responses I get...

oooohh!! I love the egg!!!... but i vote handle because they are just SO much easier to use. open with pinky if hands full etc.

Egg. I get caught on handles (pockets of pants, jackets clothes) so I am personally not a fan of handles, though they are pretty and very easy for unlatching (which may be why your DH likes them.) I also just prefer the look of the egg, though your handle choice is nice.

With a name like "costal Modern", I figure your home has a more contemporary feel. Egg can go either way, but the handle detail seems traditional. But as I look at your fixtures they also seem to have some traditional detail... You can't loose.

For the door, I vote egg just because the handle in the pic looks a little like the one I put on my toilet. (Sorry for the image. [grin] I'm sure it's totally different in real life.) But I think you should choose door hardware based on practicality. If you have smart dogs who can reach the door handle, choose a knob; if there will be elderly or arthritic people living in the house someday, or if you frequently need to open doors while your hands are full, choose lever. I think they both look good with your cabinet choices.

I can't vote on your cabinet hardware because I would be as torn as you! My immediate reaction to your pics was that with the higher knob placement you'd have to be careful to avoid the miter seam, but you have already accounted for that. Good luck, I think your kitchen is beautiful and will look great either way!

-- added: OK, I went back and looked and I vote for the lower knob placement; it lines up nicely with the rail that way and gets the screws further away from the seam. But either would look OK, honestly.

I like #2 for both hardware placements.
I like the handle for your doors. It seems to go with the lever theme you have going and is a nice version of the lever. I have the eggs in my own house, so it is a choice based more on your other choices.

Coastal - have you counted up the votes? I have the feeling they're coming in pretty close to 50/50. I think that's my worst nightmare: I don't want to have to make the decision on my own!!

But at least I feel like most people are saying that both choices are good!!

Egg, the handle kinda looks like you wanted to match it, but didn't quite make it.

however, if anyone in the family has arthritis issues, handles are better.

do you have exterior french doors? i have egg knobs throughout the house and handles on the exterior doors. you don't want to go mixing handle styles. at least i wouldn't. but even if this is not a concern, i still like the egg better. the handles always catch on my clothes.

Handle seems to be more popular- a couple like the looks of egg but choose handle for function. This is too close for me. I have another day to decide so lets see if any others chime in.

I find level handles much more handy (sorry if that sounds like a pun.) When I have my hands full with something and need to open a door (e.g. carrying stuff down to the basement or carrying a laundry basket somewhere) I can push down on a lever with my elbow or the side of my hand and open the door; a knob requires a fully free hand to open.

Egg. I feel like handles are not really very "classic". Plus they drive me up the wall when the catch on clothing or purses or whatever. And I really love the feeling of putting my hand around a solid, well-made door knob and turning it. That heft, and satisfying click when you open the door. I know, I'm weird ;)

And how bout if I add the teeny tiny little fact that my GC ordered the handle **by mistake** without my final approval, and they are already at my house!
They will exchange for egg if I can ever decide.

I see the handle as more classic and not going "out of style"... also your house is a little craftsman"y" and I view the egg as a little more victorian looking. But then I'm FAR from an interior decorator!!

I like both--so hard to choose! Personally, I think I would choose the handle, but that's because I'm forever trying to turn the knob to the basement and laundry doors with my hands full. However, I just saw an "egg" cabinet knob yesterday when I was looking through hardware sites, and I fell in love! So, no matter which you choose, it will look great, IMO!
