Candle Makers

Are there any other candle makers out there? Most of what I read on this site is about soap making. I've made soap before, and I'm wondering about a few things. Can the fragrances for soap be used in candles? How about the colors?

Where can I find two part molds for candles?

I live in San Diego, CA, and I'm tired of going to Michaels (their selection is kindof limited), but I don't know where else to go to find more than the basic stuff.

At this point, anything will help!

Also, I'm an organic gardener, and I am interested in using herbs and fragrant plants from my garden in the candles I make. Anyone know of any good reference books?

Anyone? Please?

to a degree yes, oil for soap can be used for candles, but some have low flash points & shouldn't be used for candles. If you know where you got you scents from they may have info about cross usage/flash points. (Although, I've used pretty much any oil I had to make candles, they WERE for personal use, so if they caught on fire I had no one to blame but me........)
Colors I'm not sure about.

Candle molds-check alot of the soap sites mentioned on this board-frequently they carry supplies for both. Bitter creek candle supply & Wholesalesupplies.com are 2 I can think of off the top of my head. Also there is a candle company called pourette (don't know if that spelling is correct)...Also, check the web....go to google & type in candle supplies....you'll get tons of places to check.

I make candles- have only recently began soapmaking. I purchase my candle wax (Astorlite J223) from candlesandsupplies.com. I get all of my supplies there, with the exception of fragrance oils. Although I purchase fragrance oils from several different places, my main supplier is Bittercreek (candlesupply.com). A lot of fragrance oils are safe for wax and bath and body products, but you have to read and make sure. I try to purchase oils that are wax and body safe. I have found that the oils will smell different in soap than they do wax. (I do melt and pour soap.) In soap, the fragrances are pretty much the same as they smell in the bottle. Wax alters the fragrance some, and so do certain soap bases like goatsmilk and oatmeal. You cannot use the same colors for soap as you do candles- you must use a soap colorant, and most are water based whereas the wax colorants are wax-based. I use food coloring for my soap. As far as adding botanicals to the candles- I have never done that so I don't have the faintest idea about that subject. I am including a link to a great newsgroup called "The Scent Review". Hi, Victoriannoire. I forgot to check the box to have any responses sent to me, so just saw your question. Yes, they have a web site: chocolateflowerfarm.com. If you google it, you should also find a few clips and press releases. I think Martha Stewart gave it praise within the first month or two of opening, if you can believe it! I tried the candle warmers that everyone is so crazy about, and I don't like them for the same reason you stated- for some reason the scent seems to burn off, no matter what brand it is, even one of my own, and you are left with a bunch of weak smelling wax. Whether "rebatching" the wax would work or not, I don't know. Since it will already have some oil in it, it may not hold much more fragrance. The wax would have to be completely melted and then the fragrance oil stirred into it quite well- just like making a candle from scratch. Then the candle would need to set up and cure for about a week. Feasibly, you could have a brand new candle or you could have a flop. You may want to consider using fragrance oils in water on the candle warmer. I know people that do that. It is essentially the same as an electric or tea-light fragrance diffuser. The people I know just put the water in something glass and heat resistant (like a coffee cup) and add some fragrance oil, and let it heat on the warmer. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Hi Terri, Thanks for the reply. I am living in NE Mississippi. Born and raised in N.H. I have a candle Kit coming as I was not sure How to start. Wax I like soy, jars kinda traditional Def. Think Yankee.(being that I am one at heart still) I have found a soy from Wal Mart that stays fragent to the end but they are so hard to find.This is why I wanted to start making my own. I am retired and have plenty of time to spend on them. Have always been a crafty person but have never done candles. I am really tired of buying candles and no smell!!!

I just posted to you at the Craft forum.. I will reitterate..soy wax burns better when a fragrance oil is added..you'll have to up the wick size actually to burn a non oil scented candle. And about the toxins...If you buy quality oils, presented by people who work hard at having them created to resale..you get quality products. Most people that have trouble with burning candles, actually have trouble with the "gas"(I don't know what the technical term is. LOL) given off by paraffin burning, not the oil that fragrances them. I have an asthmatic that purchases only my soy candles, because she can't be around any others without an attack happening. And if you want ambiance, with no scent the cheapest way to get that isn't soy, but palm steric acid.And paper wicks are best for that "wax". Which you can buy at candle supply places..it's an additive used with paraffin wax to "stregthen" the wax to make stronger molded candles like pillars and such. Hmm which gives me the thought that maybe you should look at palm waxes, or palm based waxes. Here is a link that might be useful: Candle-wic
