Does anyone know how to make jewelweed or poison ivy soap?

Just a guess..but I'd think you need to steep either in your oils first...

Here's some instructions for using Jewelweed in MP Soap..but maybe you could boil the plant in the water for your CP...
Jewelweed Soap
Ingredients
2 cups glycerin soap
1/2 cup jewelweed maceration (gather blooming jewelweed and boil in 1/2 cup water)
7 drops sweet orange oil
2 drops of orange coloring

Instructions
Melt glycerin in double boiler or slowly in microwave. Add jewelweed maceration, stir until slightly cooled. Add fragrance and color. Pour into molds. Cool.
You can find jewelweed growing next to poison ivy...it has a little orange jewel like flower. It is used to heal the rash caused by poison ivy.

Hi Terry, Thank you for the follow up. I just posted a second message by mistake as I couldn't find the first one. Anyway, thank you. That is what I needed to know. Still one more question. Do you boil the entire plant including blooms or just the green parts. Also, do you know if it is effective for poison ivy? Thanks so much for answering. Jan

The old saying was that if you see poison ivy, jewelweed will be growing close by. Jewelweed likes rich, moist soil (whereas poison ivy is opportunistic and grows in lots of different places). So while you may well see poison ivy growing near jewelweed, the reverse is not all that commonly true. Sad to say, some recent studies show jewelweed is not effective in preventing poison ivy rash on exposure. Other folk remedies have little if any evidence supporting them, aside from testimonials. Given that people's susceptibility to poison ivy varies so widely, the plant has such a variable appearance (meaning some exposures aren't really to poison ivy) and other factors like mechanical removal may be involved in stories about plants/herbs preventing P.I. attacks, these reports will be unreliable. Prevention is probably best. At the least suspicion that I may have contacted poison ivy while gardening, I run into the house and wash thoroughly.

Hey gang, The best thing I have found for poison ivy is a good old fashoned home remedy. Find yourself a patch of JEWELWEED. Rub the juice from the stem and leaves on your rash or exposed area for fast relief. Check this website WWW.wildmanstevebrill.com . just click on the link for Foraging/ wild plants and look up jewelweed. he has excellent photos. At the end of the page is a letter I sent him with my experiences. My folks used to insist we scrub with fels Naptha soap if we got in contact with PI. OH YEAH! dON'T MAKE MY MISTAKE! I use this plant so much that I decided to gather seeds and put them in a corner of my yard. I only brought home about 10 seeds. That was 2 years ago and I have just finished clearing about 300 of the plants form the yard. Luckily they have very shallow roots. They are very invasive!

Actually, it starts to come up fairly early in Spring. Try to remember where you saw it in the summer and you'll find it in the same general area the following Spring. In many areas it's considered invasive. Once you are able to ID it, you can use it, even when it's still young.

Either yellow or spotted (orange) jewelweed will work. A couple of methods: first, just whizz the (well-washed) fresh plant, roots and all in the food processor & add the mook to the soap at trace. This will get all of the active components in the jewelweed in the soap but your soap will 1) look very "natural" & 2) probably rot in a few months. Second method: Make a tea out of the whole plant (a good handful per quart of water) & use this as your water portion to mix with the lye. If you must, add potassium hydroxide as a preservative. Don't water reduce with this method-- you want the max jewelweed tea you can get into the soap. Third, dry the plant & grind it really well into a powder-- if you don't grind it, it will scratch like h**l, which is not fun when you're already hurting. Then add 1TB/# or so to the soap at trace. I you are gearing up for summer, this is a better method, as your soap will be cured right around the first PI outbreak.

Well Jewelweed is indeed a "help" to dispell poison ivy..

I'm not a soaper myself, and I don't make anything that needs to be "steeped"...so I can't be more specific from personal experience..

I would think the leaves, stem and flower...just not the roots...
