What do you think of my backsplash choices(pics)
Comments (20)Hey Pluckymama, Did you ever get any pictures of the WZ? I would love to see it. Still deciding between that and the sonoma. Dh thought the sample of the WZ was so shiny, but he is leaving the decision up to me. I'm not doing the mosaic and was wondering if I should even do something behind the range. It's only a 30 inch and the range isn't even centered in the kitchen. It's not a huge space and I'm wondering if I should just keep it simple with the subways in a running bond pattern. I use so many accessories, colors and flowers thru the seasons. It's nice to have a neutral backdrop for that. The sonoma tile does come in 1" by 2" herringbone sheets, so I could do that behind the range. Thoughts? One salesperson thought I wouldn't really have enoough space with a 30 inch range to do mamadadapaige's herringbone with the 2x6. Here is the picture of the 1x2 sonoma, although it's not in the right color....See MoreWhat do you call this type knife and suggestions
Comments (41)Johnliu, that was a great write-up, very educational. Count me as someone OCD about my knives. I also want to emphasize that one's "taste" in knives is very individual. So, for me, regarding ceramic knives - I know they are really sharp, and maintain their sharpness much longer than steel knives, and are easier to care for (as long as you don't drop them). Having said that, I cannot stand the hard sound they make when chopping - that sound and how they feel as they strike the cutting board gives me the shivers. Obviously, this is a very personal thing! One more thing that John briefly mentioned that I want to expand on a bit is the type of cutting board. If you care about your knives, or care about the investment of $$ you've made in your knives, you should not use a plastic cutting board. They will dull your knives in just a few uses. You should use wood cutting boards. No one knows where the idea came from that plastic boards are safer - researchers at the University of Wisconsin have studied this perception that plastic cutting boards are better, and were unable to ascertain why people think this. Their findings were that wooden boards are safer. "The [University of Wisconsin] researchers purposely contaminated wood and plastic boards with bacteria and then tried to recover those bacteria alive from the boards. They also tested boards made from seven different species of trees and four types if plastic. They incubated contaminated boards overnight at refrigerator and room temperatures and at high and typical humidity levels. They tested several bacteria, Q Salmonella, Listeria and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli Q known to produce food poisoning. The results consistently favored the wooden boards, often by a large margin over plastic boards. The scientists found that three minutes after contaminating a board that 99.9 percent of the bacteria on wooden boards had died, while none of the bacteria died on plastic. Bacterial numbers actually increased on plastic cutting boards held overnight at room temperature, but the scientists could not recover any bacteria from wooden boards treated the same way. A major question is why wood is so inhospitable to bacteria. The researchers have tried unsuccessfully to recover the compound in wood that inhibits bacteria, and is continuing the research."...See MoreWhat do you think of these flooring choices (and backsplash)?
Comments (10)It's funny the way the camera views things differently. IRL, the 3rd wood looks much closer to the tile color, but I'm not sure that's a good thing. The dark floor we have now really shows the dust - not good for a lazy housekeeper such as myself. I do fine with the halls and kitchen, but I don't even notice it in the big room, probably because I seldom go in there except to walk through it. Another thing I've been wondering about is the feel of the wood. Our current floor has, or had, a smooth finish. It didn't look plastic, but had an obvious finish coat on it. The first two samples here don't have a smooth finish at all, almost like they need to be sanded a little more. The salesman said they have a scratch resistant coating and they are hand scraped. The third sample has a finish that feels smooth, more like furniture....See MoreWhat are these called and how would you decorate with them?
Comments (15)I have 4 "wall pocket" type pieces that I purchased from a local artist about 10 years ago. The artist called her pieces "flower slippers". I actually put real plants in them. They only hold a small amount of dirt but the plants have been growing in them for years. I believe I have only changed out the plants once. I am not really a plant person so I don't know the names of the plants but they are succulents. You might be able to put dirt in you pieces and grow real plants in them as I have done....See Moresquirrelheaven
