Best place to look for granite in MD

I think I'm ready to start the search for granite. Maybe not to find the exact slabs, but at least to see whats out there and if any of it "speaks to me". Any suggestions on where to go on a Saturday AM? Maybe where I can hit more than one place? I live just north of Baltimore, so I can go as far as DC, Harrisburg, Frederick.

I remodeled my kitchen last year - I was my own general contractor.

I visited a few different Granite places in the area before choosing. (I am in Howard County). I settled on "Milestone" Kitchen Granite Counter tops. They are located just inside the Beltway, on the south side of the beltway, just off of Washington Blvd. The owners names are "Haim and Ruti Amir". They are not very "polished" as sales people go - more "old world". I LOVED this about them. It was like having Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof installing my countertops. Really.

But - speaking granite-wise.... he keeps a few dozen slabs right there at his place, and if he has what you like right there, available, it is a big savings. Otherwise he'll do just what everyone else does - send you to a couple of the distribution/warehouse locations for you to pick out what you like, and then do a cost sheet for you.

He'll give you a sales pitch on taking a sink and faucet from him ---- because he's an "artist", and he wants you to have "art" in your kitchen. I took his sink - that new granite/polymer thing they do now - but I bought my own faucet. I like sparkly stainless steel faucets (no matter what other metal there is in my kitchen) and I insisted on having the one of my choice.

His work is wonderful. He has an international crew of craftsmen that do good quality work. He has news articles about his work hanging around in there little office - one about how he installed Johns Hopkins lab's counter tops.

I ended up liking at the warehouse (over in Dorsey area, off of 176), what turned out to be a very high end granite. Can't remember it's name, but it was like a "category 5" quality granite, or something like that. Ended up spending a lot more than I had gone in expecting to spend -- but that was MY fault, not Milestone's.

Highly recommend them. And, be prepared for a lot of "big personality" when dealing with Haim. I thought he was quite charming, but everyone might not agree.

This is a grot I made using Kleenblast slag sand, it does have a nice granity look that I didn't capture very well here. The mix was 1:1:1:1 portland/perlite/peat/sand. I think the perlite wasn't sifted so it ranged from powder to chunks as large as a cooked rice grain (short grained - it's plumper :)). I think if you are looking for this sand you could ask for black sandblast abrasive, the place where I got it had no idea if it was slag but invited me to come have a look at it. It was $5CDN for a 50lb sack at a building supply store. I'm really liking the appearance of it, it has a glossy, black glass look to it. Here is a link that might be useful:

The Greenery in Hollywood is small but has a helpful staff. Greenstreet Growers on 258 near Deale has a wide variety of annuals. Perhaps best of all, when the local farmers markets start up again, there are often several good local growers offering a nice range of vegetable and herb starts. But, when I'm doing serious plant shopping (shrubs, trees, perennials), there are really only two choices -- Behnke's in Beltsville and Merrifield Gardens in Virginia. For seeds, an under-utilized source that is great for this area is Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. They're a small operation in the Shenandoah Valley that specializes in heirloom seeds that are well adapted to the mid-Atlantic.

I just looked at a condo I may purchase that had brazilian cherry flooring. The floor underneath the area's that were carpeting was a very different color. From reading this forum it appears that when exposed to light the floor color changes. Is there any way to even the coloring out? Will the flooring ever get to a more even coloring all over? The reason I'm asking is that if I purchase the condo I'd like to extend the flooring throughout but if its going to end up looking odd I'll have to rethink things

We are nearing the end of our DIY kitchen remodel. We just put the counters in yesterday. While it takes time and a level of skill that is uncommon, the satisfaction and money saved is so worth it if you can pull it off. We bought our inset Medallion cabinets at Just Cabinets. It is a chain that I think is throughout the northeast. I don't think our salesperson had ever sold inset cabinets to a customer before, and although they feign knowledge, they are not kitchen designers. So go prepared with your design based on the manufacturer's spec books. Had we not DIYed, we wouldn't have had the money to get so many of the wonderful things we have. But we paid for them in stress, hard work, and research time. The order from Medallion/Just Cabinets was packaged well and arrived in a reasonable amount of time. We used Hardwood Lumber Co for the countertops (butcherblock), and they were so helpful and easy to work with. The counters arrived SO fast and in great shape. We got our farm sink from IKEA; it's called Domsjo. I found it easy to install compared to others because there is a sort of false front that covers your hand-cut sink opening.

Live in Catonsville We used Rocktops in Lansdowne. Great fabricators- they did my stepmothers granite counters too.
Classic Marble and Granite- Jessup- my neighbors used them last year for their kitchen.
Beveled Edge( I think is the name) in Frederick. He is on the stone forum.
Got quotes from all three fabricators and decided on Rocktops.
Had gone to a granite yard to look around but unless you already have a name of a fabricator they won't sell to you.
I found that most of the fabricators have a small stock of granite. If you custom order from a yard- it is more$$

I live in North Baltimore also! I called Bob from Petrafab 410-525-8646 because of a recommendation from Maureen on this forum for soapstone installation, he proved to be so very helpful with advice and information on many different types of stone. I had also looked him up on Angie's list and he is highly rated there as well. He gave me the names and directions for all the stone yards locally. He said Pinnacle in Baltimore would probably have the soapstone, but definitely Avanti in Frederick would. The yards would all carry marble, but honed marble is harder to find. Most of the yards post their available slabs online.

Also I'm going to share some ballpark figures he gave me (installation included, cutouts extra)
Green Mountain soapstone $70/sf
Marble - between $55 to $120/sf depending on coloration and veining, and type.
