Paint color transition (stairwell)

Hi guys,

Just one more quick question while I wait for my sample paints to dry....

Below is a picture of the stairwell leading to the basement. The hideous lino will be covered by charcoal carpet. I imagine the walls will be some gray tint (to be determined, hopefully this afternoon). The color currently on the walls is Glidden's Candlelit Dinner-- a very soft creamy yellow.

My question is, do I have to repaint the whole stairwell? Or is there a way to gracefully transition to the gray color? For instance, could I just start where the paneling begins on the right-hand side? (FYI, I'm already planning to paint the railing on the left side black.)

The landing at the top of this stairwell is just off the entrance of the garage, and continues into the main part of the house; the stairs are to your right as you head into the house proper. (I hope this makes sense). My point is that it's what you see as soon as you come in from the garage and it's also readily visible from the main part of the house--no door--so I want it to look nice.

(I absolutely hate this about my house's layout, BTW, but it's here for good!)

Something that I did is to sponge paint or texture sponge my transition color over the top of bottom half of wall-just make a line following your steps about 30-36" down nice and straight- use frog tape to make it perfect-then continue with your second color to rest of the basement. also keeps finger prints and marks to a minimum as the folks and children who use the stairway will not be noticeable. Don't have to have a fit when they touch the wall (!) Folks in general don't seem to love sponge painting idea anymore but I get compliments all the time on my transition paint job in the stairwell. Good-luck to you with whatever solution you choose!

No, that whole wall needs to be the same color ... unless you cased in the opening with trim, right where you have the current floor transition, then the kitchen wall would have a logical end point.

Wallpapering seems daunting. Here are two pics of my staircase. (Second one won’t post, but there is a small window at the top of the stairs) Until I can replace them, I plan to paint the wood rails Benjamin Moore, Kendal charcoal, which is the same color as our kitchen cabinets. To the right, when you walk in is the staircase and to the left an open living room with these curtains hanging. (See link below) To give an idea of my colors. In our home our living room is a great room which goes into kitchen and down the hall like yours. We painted the exterior walls a pale yellow and interior walls and kitchen soffets a slightly darker shade. We love it. This could be done with any color you chose.
