Who had the amazing flour/sugar drawers?

Anyone remember seeing these?

Not the tilting bin cabinet kind. This was a deep drawer with large rectangular flour/sugar storage inside.

The search function isn't working for me. I'd love to learn more about these--I think they'd work great for me. I'm wondering if they were custom; can't find anything like it on Google either.

Yes, I remember them. UGH! But who!!I was on brain overload then, so it must have been around Dec./Jan.?

Make bread with the occident flour. From the label, the occident flour is bromated (potassium bromate). Years ago it was common for flour to contain bromates and iodates, which are dough conditioners, and they gave bread dough more extensibility. That's when "double" was the common standard to allow dough to rise. Now, without bromates in flour, it's best to only allow dough to rise to just UNDER double or you chance over-proofing the dough. There was an anti-bromate movement and California banned bromates in flour and it has been removed from most commercial flour products. It has been replaced with ascorbic acid. The malted barley flour in the occident flour will add a bit of a nutty flavor. If it was diastatic barley malt, that contributes enzymes that break down the big molecules of starch into the simple sugars that yeast can use. As for the 10-grain flour, check out recipes at Bob's Red Mill (scroll down the page - just before the reviews): Vegan 10-Grain Pancakes Banana Pecan Coffee Cake 10-Grain Yogurt Quick Bread Craig's World Famous Natural Granola (or Bars) Because there are a number of low-gluten and gluten-free grains/seeds/beans in the 10-grain mixture, you need to be mindful of that for making a yeast bread with it. Use it in combination with a high-gluten bread flour for bread so you have enough gluten available (start by substituting 20-25% of the bread flour with 10-grain flour). My seed counter that misntroya kindly mentioned is pictured below. It is an antique that I don't use for it's original purpose. The front glass portions are only about 3/4 inch deep and purely decorative. Any items that I have put in so far have been selected for being "bug free or resistant". The peppermint candies are actually Styrofoam wrapped in red and clear paper that I found at the craft store in the wreath making section. The back of the piece has the drawers that are almost as deep as the entire cabinet. The sides and bottom are made of galvanized metal. I store extra paper products, towels and whatnot in the drawers. No flour or sugar! I also freeze my flour when it arrives from the store. It then goes in a tightly sealing, pretty glass jar from Walmart that cost $4! I also remember seeing the inserts that remodelfla shows above, but decided that trying to keep them clean and the flour fresh would be more trouble than they were worth. They do look very cool however!

Re--those sifter containers from Kennedy Hdwe--I got to wondering if that disclaimer about not recommending for food products is just some legal CYA. Maybe because they don't have NSF seal of approval or something? Might be worth a call to Kennedy for more info? Anyway, this discussion made me realize something positive about my crummy old kitchen. I have one of those pie-cut lazy susans, the kind where the door is fixed to the susan, like the image on the left... I keep my sugar & flour canisters on the susan...open the susan and use out of the canister w/o ever removing it from the shelf. Really is a handy arrangement except for the fact that the susan is across the kitchen from where I have room for the mixer. :( I only keep all-purpose flour there; the other specialty flours are stored in refrigerator or freezer. So, in a MNO (money no object!) Kitchen, refrig/ freezer drawers would be nice in the baking area. I'm figuring that I'll use the Cambro type containers in a drawer in the new kitchen unless a better solution pops up. (I nixed a susan in favor of a huge blind corner cabinet that we have already built.) The Cambros will be at about the same height as the they would be on the Susan which is a convenient height for me (I'm an average 'almost' 5'5''.)

Like anoriginal says, the bugs were already there. The female weevil lays eggs in the wheat kernel and it can sometimes survive the milling process. The eggs will hatch if they’re in warm or humid conditions, or have reached their maturity. The flour bugs eat the grain and then seek to mate… while eating more grain. How do these pests get into our food? Occasionally, some may find their way inside from outdoors; however, the majority of these pests are in food products brought into the home. The initial infestation can originate at the processing plant, the warehouse, the delivery vehicle, or the retail store (chances of becoming infested increase the longer a food item is stored at the same location). Beetles and moths have four stages in their development: egg, larva, pupa and adult. All stages may be present in the food, but the eggs are so tiny they are seldom seen. The larval stage is most destructive, but the adult stage is most often seen. DOES FLOUR GO BAD? The short answer: Yes. The long answer: The more processed the flour is, the longer it takes to go bad. Whole grain flours should be kept in a refrigerator for the short term, about 2-5 days. If you need to store whole grain flour for longer than a handful of days, the freezer is the best place. If the flour will be used within a month or two, it should be kept in a sealed container. One to two months is considered “quick” in terms of flour usage, so you can keep your flour in a container that is NOT sealed (i.e. the same thick paper bag, rolled down) but the chances of the flour going rancid increase. If the flour will not be completely consumed within two months, it should be stored in a sealed container. Freeze newly purchased grains and flour for at least three days to kill any eggs. Some sources recommend freezing for up to one week. (Note that freezing will kill the eggs, but not remove them.) As a general guideline, don’t buy more grain than you will use within four months. Store grain in a tightly sealed container, not a bag. Weevils are HUNGRY little devils and can eat through bags. (See my storage recommendations above). Adding whole bay leaves and garlic cloves to the area seems to deter flour bugs from setting up shop in your pantry. Garlic may leave a trace flavor in your baked goods, so if you don’t want that, go for the bay leaves instead. You can also apply tea tree oil to a few cotton balls and place them throughout the pantry. WILL EATING BEETLES HARM ME? Other than give you the heebie jeebies, they’re harmless. In fact, the heat from baking kills the eggs and any beetles that may have made their way into your batter. So while the odds of us eating weevils – or have eaten weevils in the past – are high, the mortality rate is low.

I saw the PW ones this AM, and that's what made me remember I wanted to do the drawers someone posted here! It was a deep drawer that you opened, and inside were these inset (built-in?) bins, flush with the inside of the drawer.

Those are pretty nifty. We go through quite a bit of sugar especially in the summer with sweet tea, (although trying to cut back) but I don't use that much flour and have always kept that in the frig or freezer. But I love that look though.

I just have drawers for my baking stuff. But I did see a bread box thingy made to insert inside a drawer so I am sure you can find something for sugar and flour.

I remember one or two that were custom. What I remember was made from acrylic by the DH to fit the drawer. I just used my Tupperware containers in a similar fashion. That works too.

You might want to reconsider before putting these things in. They are very attractive to insects.

I know this is not what your referring to but I just love to look at it and can't wait to use it! Sorry to those who have seen it a dozen times. Lord knows I can't wait to use it like on day I had today with all the family over and baking dessert.

remodelfla - no need to apologize for another photo of your baking cupboard. It's such a lovely piece. I'm ready to see it in your kitchen also. Do me a favor when you post your finished picture of it - make sure to title the thread something that will catch our attention and won't be overlooked.

That is mine! It is one of my favorite things about my kitchen. I ordered it at a place called Custom Inserts where they make it according to your drawer measurements. I don't remember how much it cost, but I know it wasnt cheap because I gave it a lot of thought.

I don't know why it would attract bugs any more than any other container for flour or sugar. It doesn't seal like Tupperware, but it closes tightly and is a fully contained item that slides into your drawer. I live in southern California and I've never seen a bug in there.
